BURN GUARD FOR PRESSING MACHINES.

This invention relates to pressing machines of a type in which one pressing element orpress head in theform of a platen is movable toward and from another pressing element also in the form of a platen and has for its object a particularly simple and efficient burn guard for preventing the operator from coming 1n contact with the heated surface of the movable or upper press head.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a pressing machine provided with my burn guard, the press being shown as closed.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, the press being shown as open.
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic plan v1ew of the means for operating the burn guard.

t This invention comprises generally a burn guard carried by the support for the movable pressing element and located in front or lengthwise of the front edge of the movable element and operable to move across the ironing face of the movable element during the openingeof the press, in a direction at a right angle to the movement of the movable element and also in a position to obstruct the closing of the press and being also succes sively movable during the closing of the press out from between such elements and finally having a forward sweeping movement as the press approaches its closed position and means operated by the movement of the movable element for actuating or con trolling the actuation of the burn guard.
I have here shown my invention as embodied in a conventional form of garment or laundry pressing machine com 'irising a stationary pressing element as lower buck 1, an upper movable press element or' press head 2 movable toward and from the buck 1, a support as a yoke lever 3 for the movable element 2, this'lever being pivotedat 1 between its ends to a standard Sforming part of .the main frame of the machine. The buck 1 is also suitably supported on the main frame. The yoke lever 3 is actuated in for actuating it in any suitable manner as through toggle inech anism either by pedals or by motor actuated or controlled mechanism. The yoke lever 3 1S usually provided with asuitable counterweight 6, all of which will be understood by those skilled in the art. a
a The burn guard comprises a roller 7 extending across the front edge of the movable element 2, and having a spring 8 for winding it in one direction, a sheet 9 winding on the roller and movable crosswise of the ironing face of the head 2 or in adirection at an angle to the movement of the head 2 and means for automatically actuating the roller during the opening and closing of the press head. The roller is carried by a movable carrier here shown as consisting of a link 10 at each end of the roller, the link being pivoted at 11 to the yoke lever 3 and also pivoted at 12 on the axle of the roller, these links or carriers 10 are also arranged, so that the roller is normally located in front of the front edge of the head 2 when the press is closed and is moved from the position shown in Figure 1 to that shown in Figure 2 into a position between the presselements so as to obstruct the closing I movement of the pressing element; and the actuating means so operates that the carrier 10 and the roller 7 remain in the position shown in Figure 2 until the press is nearly closed so that the roller will engage the hands of the operator if he has his hand orhands on the lower buck, and then such' carrier and roller has a forwardly and upwardly 'swingingmovement which tends to sweep the operators handsout from between the buck just prior to the time the head comes into completely closed position. movement of the links 10 is against a suitable spring as the' spring 13. a The means for operating the burn guard, thatis, for unwinding the sheet 9 off the roller and moving the carrier 10 against the springs 13 on its pivot during the opening of the press and for permitting the roller to wind up and thereafter the roller to swing bodily from the position shown in Figure 2 to that shown in Figure 1, comprises connections operated by the movement of the lever These connections as here shown comprise cables connected to opposite ends of the sheet winding on the roller and located beyond the ends of the buck 1 and means forwinding up such cables during the opening of the press head and permitting the cables to unwind under the action of the springs 8 and 18 during the closing movement of the press.
'14 designates the cables here shown as passing over suitable pulleys 15 and 15 carried by the press head 2 or the yoke lever 3 and winding on a roller 16 and the means for actuating the roller comprises a stationary pulley 17 and a cable 18 fixed at one end at 19 to the rear arm of the yoke lever 3 and its other end winding on a roller 20 mounted upon a shaft 20 on which the roller 16is mounted. Preferably, a block and tackle principle is employed and the cable 18 passes first from its point of at tachment 19 to the yoke lever 3 over the stationary pulley 17 and then downwardly over a pulley 21 mounted on the rear arm of the lever 3, then upwardly over the stationary pulley 17, thence over the roller 20. In order to avoid the use of two pulleys 17, the runs of the cable between the pulleys 21 and 17 are crossed.
The pulley 17 is shown as carried by a bracket 22 supported in any suitable manner by the main frame, it being here shown as mounted upon the pivot pin a on which the yoke 3 is mounted, the shaft or pivot 4 being nonrotatable.
In operation, assuming that the press is closed; upon the opening of the press, the roller 7 is unwound against the action of the spring 8 and the sheet 9 moved across the face of the pressing element 1 until unwound and then the carrier 10 moved on its pivot swinging the roller into its position shown in Figure 2.
During the closing of the press, the sheet 9 first winds on the roller 7 and at the time it is wound or nearly wound thereon the press head is in nearly closed position but the roller is in its position shown in Figure 2 but overlies the work on the lower buck 1. During the final closing movement, the spring 13 reacts and swings the roller forwardly and upwardly so that it has a sweeping action tending to sweep the operatofis hands out from between the pressing elements, and thus the roller 7 carried on the swing link or. carrier 10 functions as a hand guard.
This burn guard is particularly advantageous in that it is economical in construction and readily applied to the pressing machine.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one movable toward and from the other and a pivoted support for the movable pressing element, the combination of a hand guard carried by the movable element and movablein a general direction at a right angle to the movement of suchelement to forcibly remove the hand of an operator out of the press, and
means for automatically moving the hand guard into a position between the elements during the opening movement of the movable element and out from between said elements during the closing movement.
2. In a pressing machine comprising eooperatingpressing elements, one movable toward and from the other and a support for the m vable pressing element, the combination of a. burn and hand guard carried by said support and located in front of the movable element and mo "able rearwardly into a position between said pressing elements during the opening of the press and forrmrdly from between said elements as the 11101 able elenu-nt approaches its closed po=i-rition.
3. In a pressing machine comprising cooperating pre 3ielements, one movable toward and from the other and a support for the pressing element, the combination of a burn guard carried by the movable support and inchuling a sheet normally arranged in a roll along the front side of the movable element and means for succe rely moving the roll bodily during the opening movement of the press into a position to obstruct closing of the press and an unwinding of the sheet across the face of the movable element and a successive winding up in a roll, and a forward bodily nnivelnent of the roll during the closing of the movable element.
i. In a pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one movable toward and from the other and a support for the movable pressing element, the combination of a burn guard coi'nprising a roller carried by the support and located across the front edge of the movable element, a carrier for the roll mounted to more the roll downwardly and rearwardly during the opening movement of the press and upwardly and forwardly as the movable element approaches closed position and means operated by the movement of said support for operating the burn guard.
5. In a pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one movable toward and from the other and a support for the movable pressing element, the combination of a burn guard extending across the front edge of the movable element and means carrying said guard to move it downwardly and rearwardly during the opening movement of the press into a position to obstruct closing of the movableelement and forwardly and upwardly as the press head approaches its closed position and means operated by the movement of the support for operating the burn guard.
6. In a pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one movable toward and from the other and a support for the movable pressing element, the combination of a burn guard extending across the front edge of the movable element a carrier therefor pivoted to the support and to the burn guard and arranged to swing the burn guard downwardly and rearwardly between the pressing elements during the opening movement of the movable element and to move the burn guard forwardly and upwardly as the movable element approaches closed position and means ope 'ated bythe movable support to swing said carrier during the opening and closing movement of the movable element.
7. In a pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one movable toward and from the other and a support for the movable pressing element, the combination of a burn guard comprising a roller located across the front edge of the movable element and a spring for rotating the roller in one direction, a sheet winding on the roller and passing across the face of the movable pressing element and means operable by the movement of the support for unwinding the sheet from the roller during the opening movement of the movable element and for permitting the spring to wind the roller and the sheet thereon during the closing movement of the movable element.
8. In a pressing machine comprising cooperating pressing elements, one movable toward and from the other and a support for the movable pressing element, the combination of a burn guard comprising a roller located across the front edge of the movable element, a carrier for said roller movably mounted on the support to cause the roller 10 move downwardly and rearwardly into a position between the pressing elements during the opening movement of the press and forwardly and upwardly out from beably mounted on the support to cause the roller to move downwardly and rearwardly into a positlon between the pressing elements during the opening movement of the press and forwardly and upwardly out from between said elements as the movable element approaches its closed position, a spring for winding the roller in one direction, a spring for resisting movement of the roller carrier, a sheet winding on the roller and movable across the face of the movable pressing element and means for successively unwinding the sheet from the roller against the action of the roller spring and moving the carrier against its spring during the opening movement of the press, and successively causing the roller to wind up the sheet and the carrier to move to its starting position during the closing movement of the movable element.
