ERNST C. RTMEIER, OF CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
Patented dreh. 7, 1928. if Y' Bun consfravofrroiv.
Appncanoa ined Mama 4, ieee. semi no. 92,116.
My invention relates to beds. 1n my coand foot sections 11, 11b. The central secpending` application Serial Number 739,7511 tion 10 is preferably rigidly attached in filed September' 25, 1924, I have described a some suitable manner to the main frame 6, bed particularly adapted for use by invalids while the head section 9 merely rests thereon, 00 t and patients in hospitals or sanitariums. being.;` `adapted to swing` upwards (as, for One of the objects of my present invenexample, onlpivot 12 bynwhichpart S) is contion is to provide a bed whereby a bedpan nected tol part 10), and thus through any may be placed under a patient and remove-d desired angle. 1t will thus be seen that by` therefrom after use without any discomfort the use of this device one can gradually ac`' 65 1o or soiling of the'bedclothes` and without custom a person who has been confined in liability of injury to a patient who may bed for sonic time, to sitting up. l have undergone a serious operation, where to Similarly the parts 11 and 11b merely move Certain parts of the body would be rest on the frame 6 and are adapted to be harmful or even dangerous. i raised to any desired position to accustoin 7() Anomal- Objegt 0i my invention ig to prothe patient to gradually bending his knees. vide means whereby a patient convalescing For this purpose, as in case of the headfrom a long` illness may accustoin himself piece 9, the part 11a may be made to swing gradually to sitting` up, while still resting,- on on the pivot 13 by which said part is conthe bed, thus obviating the annoyance of DGCtGCl O th@- 0911i ill POX'OII 10. suitable attaching means, such as the braclr- Mounted in brackets 7, 7 and duplicated ets 7, 7. These brackets actalso as bearings on'each side of the bed is screw shaft 24. 0n for shafts t@ be hereinafter described, this shaft is mounted, near the head of the 105 ,5U Supcrposed on the main frame 6 is a bed, sleeve screw 25. Mounted on the sleeve frame 8 which for convenience in descripscrew is spiral gear 26, which meshes with tion will be hereinafter termed the auxiliary pinion 27 on longitudinal shaft 28, and at the frame. This auxiliary frame will for end of the sleeve screw, between gear 26 and further convenience in description be con the head Of the bed 1S mmlllted, O11 the Shaft 110 55 sidered as con'iprising` three main sections z-e 211, `e'ear 29 adapted to mesh with pinion 3() `head section 9, central section 10, and leg onlongitudinal shaft 31. Braclrets'mounted on the head and foot of the hed act as bearings for the shafts 2li, 28 and 31.
Mounted on the ranie near. the front end of the sleeve screw 25 is roller hearing 32. The hase of this bearing may `he of wood or metal, and this may have at or near the end of the sleeve screw a right angled abutting extension 33, adapted to act as a thrust hearingt'or the sleeve screw 25. The roller hearing- 32,` carries a roller 31 turning on pin `35tl`i`e purpose of which `will be presently explained.
Mounted on the sleeve screw 25 are trunnion 37 andnut 36, and attached to trunnion 36 is arm 38, which is lient upwards :tor the latter portion of its length. to hear on head piece 9. Thearin 3S carries on its'ahuo ting end a roller 39.
Attached to the under side of the headpiece 9 is a wedge 40, which I preferably provide with a cavity Ll1 in which the roller 39 may rest when the head-piece 9 is in raised position, `said roller hearing' directly on the edge 42 adapted to iitaud hold it securely against` movement further forward without lfurther rotation of the" sleeve-screw 25.
At the foot of the hed, and attached to the end oi foot portion 11b is a bracket i3 slotted at de to fit trunnion 45, this latter hein'g adapted when the shaft 245 is turned to morealong the screw threads i6 thereon and operate the knee-flexing apparatus.
The operation of my invention is 'lollowscWVhen the operator desires to lower the mattress heinserts the crank provided onto theendot shaft 16 an d turns in a cloekwise direction. This-rotates shaft 16 with wormsrl thereon, causing the latter to rotate worin-wheels 18 and shafts 19, which in turn rotate thepinions 20, causing them to mesh with the teeth in the racks Q1 and move the spring and a mattress downwardly and away from the frame G. Stops 4:7 attached to the head and toot of the hed serve to limit the downward movement of `the mattress.
T o raise the head portion 9, the operator inserts the crank onto the end of shaft 28, and turns in a clockwise direction. This sets up a motion between gears 27 and 2G, turning sleeve screw 25 and forcing iornf'ard the trunnion 36 carrying the arm 3S. The roller 39, as the arm moves forward, rises over the roller 34 and along the lower side oi" the wedge 40, finding rest in the cavity il and hearing directly on the edge 42. Roller 34 also acts as anfadditional` support for the `arm when the head piece is in normal posit10n,to` prevent ,breaking of the arrn under the strain, with `consequent shocl;` and possible injury to the patient or occupant of the hed. In this manner the head piece may he elevatedto any desired angle. To lower, the
crank is turned in the opposite direction. Roller 34 may, form the function oi a support for arm 38 hut need not necessarily, per` when the headpiece 9 is iii-raised position. To bend the knees, the operator inserts the crank onto the sha'tt 31, and turns in a clockwise direction setting in motion gear 29 and shaft` and moving the trunnion along the threaded portion e5 towards the head of the hed. Both the parts il and 1ib are simultaneously moved hy the action of the joint 11. 'lo lower, the crank is turned in the opposite direction.
It is to he understood that I do not limit i myself to the speeiic emhodiment of the invention described herein, `which is merely for the salie ol" illustrartion, as it is ohrions that many changes in the details or' construction may he made `within the scope of the appended claims.
