IMPROVEMENT a GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,792, dated July 20, 1875; application filed March 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEOPOLD S. 001m, of Berlin, in the county of Green Lake and in the State of Wisconsin,- have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a' part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a gate, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my gate, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a modification of the locking-lever.
The gate proper is composed of a top beam, A, and bottom beam B connected by means of pivoted bars 0 G, which may be arranged in one or two rows, according to the distance desired, between the bars. The inner end of the top beam A is pivoted between two upright posts, D D, and extended beyond the same for a suitable distance. This extended end of the beam is provided with a weight,E, to overbalance the gate and turn it in an upright or nearly upright position. When in this position the bottom bar B is folded close to the top beam A by the bars 0 0 being pivoted in grooves on the beams. When the gate is down its outer end is between two posts, D D as shown. Between the upper ends of the posts is' pivoted a locking bar or lever, G, one end of which is beveled to fit on top of the beam A when the gate is closed, and in said beveled end of the lockinglever is a pin, a, fitting in a hole on the beam, and thereby locking the gate. On each side of the lever G at this end is a projection, b, which acts as a guide to insure the proper working of the locking-lever. From each side of the locking-lever G, near the pivotpoint, projects a bar, H, which is held rigidly in the lever, and the other end of said bar journaled in a post, D located a suitable distance from and on a line with the posts D. At the outer end of each bar H is a lever, I, passing through it, and to the ends of each lever is attached a cord, 01, as shown.
It will readily be seen that by pulling on the end of either lever away from the gate the locking-lever G-is turned to raise the pin c out of its hole or socket in the beam A, and as soon as the pin is out of the same the weight E will raise the gate. By pulling on the other end of either lever I the lockinglever G forces the gate down until the pin a can enter the hole or socket and lock the gate.
Instead of having the inner ends of the bars H H fastened directly in the locking-lever G, they may be attached to auxiliary or side bars G G fastened to the locking-lever G by rods 6 e, as shown in Fig. 2.
If desired, the outer end of the gate may be held slightly elevated by means of pins passed through holes in the posts D so as to allow smaller animals to pass through, while larger ones are excluded.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination or" the weighted pivoted gate A B O, and the pivoted locking-lever Gr,
provided with the pin a and guide-projections b I), substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the locking lever G, bars H H, and levers I I, with or without the side bars G G, as and for the purposes herein set iorth.
