`TIE PRESS.
Application tiled May 12,
, My invention has for its object to provide an efficient press for ties, belts, and other articles` of anynature that are formed of `sheet material and which may` be smoothed out by a. constant pressure kbeing applied thereto. The invention isparticularly `applicable to fabric material, such as silk and cotton goods, and it is usedwith advantage for pressing and smoothing out ties and 1a cloth belts.
The inventionprovides a means whereby neckties or similar wearing apparel may be readily placed in position and subjected to pressure. Preferably the articles are subjected to a. smoothing pressure for a considerable period of time and yso that, when they are removed from the device, they are invariably smoothed out and pressed to the desired shape.
The invention may be contained in pressing devices of different forms, and to illustrate a practical application of the invention, I have selected a pressing ldevice that contains my invention, as an example oft-he f different structures that embody the invention, and shall describe the device selected vfor purposes of illustration hereinafter. The
device referred to is shown in the accom-- panying drawing.
Fig. 1 of the drawing .is a front view of a tie-press which embodies my invention. Fig. 2 is a View of a section taken on the plane of the line 2-2 indicated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of a section taken on the plane of the line 3-3 indicated in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a View of a section taken on the plane of the line 4-4 indicated in Fig. 1.
The tie-press illustrated in the `tlgures is provided with a base 1 which may be secured to a suitable support or to a wall by means of screws which may be located in the holes 2 formed in the upper ends of the base 1;
The central portion of the base 1 is raised as at 3 and also at its ends as at 4.
The central portion 3 is provided with bosses 5 in which springs 6 may be located and a presser plate may be supported on the base 1 by-means of the screws 11 which extend through the plate and are threaded -into the tapped holes formed in the bosses 12. Also the plate 10 is provided with anges 13 at its upper and lower ends that overlap surfaces formed at the ends of the raised portion 3 of the base 1. The flanges iianges 15.

said surfaces. Also the presser plate 10'is `provided with flanges 14 that lit between `the The flanges 14 and 15 extend along the side edges ofthe presser plate 10 and the base 1.l
The springs 6 located in the bosses 5 press against the inner surface of the presser plate 10 and the heads of the screws 11 limit the outward movement of the presser plate 10 under the influence of the springs 6. The presser plate 10 which is thus elastically held in position may be yieldingly pressed towards the base 1 against the pressure of the springs 6. Preferably four springs 6 are located intermediate the base 1 and the presser'plate 10 in order to yieldingly press the presser plate from the base 1 at four points near the cornerI of the presser plate.
The base 1 is also provided with a pair of ears 18 to which may be hingedly connected a second presser plate 19. The presser plate 19 is preferably so shaped as to substantially cover the presser plate 10. The base 1 is also provided with a spring latch 20 that may be, if desired, hingedly connected to the base l by means of pintles 21 and a plate 22 is hingedly'connected to the latch 20. The plate 22 is secured to the back of the Vbase 1 by means of a screw 23; The latch 20 is provided with a spring end 24 that may be slipped over the beaded or tianged edge 25 of the presser plate 19 which forms a cover to the pressing device. The length of the latch 2() and the length of the lugs 18 are such that the presser plate or cover 19 will be located in contact with the presser plate 10 when it is moved substantially to its outermost `position with reference to the springs 6 and the screws 11. y
The ridges 4 4located at the upper and lower ends ofthe base 1 are each provided with a'spring 28 that extends substantially the length of its associated ridge. Each spring 28 has an end portion- 29 that may be bent over one end of the ridge 4 and `se-V cured by means of the screw 30. The other end of each springis turned out from the ridge so as to form the lip 31. When itis desired to insert any wearing apparel, such as a belt or tie, that it is desired to smooth out or to press into any desired fold, all
4that is required is to open the cover 19 by pushing the latch 20 from the beaded edge Q of the presser or cover plate 19, Whereupon the plate 19 may be swung upon its hinges. The" tie1 or'loelt orjother article of apparel may be then slipped under the springs 28 and placed upon the surface of the presser plate in the desired- 'position to smooth the tie or bell;` or other apparel'.
The presser plate or cover 19 is then closed and secured in the closed position by means of the latch 20.
parel againstthcV surface'of the cover 19.
y Tlie two opposed surfaces of the presser The" sl'a'rings 6' will thenl cause the .presser plate 10 to press the ap-`y iiiy name to this ber may be smoothed and pressed out by the pressure exerted between the two plates 10 and 19;
I claim:
In a press for apparel, a base, a presser plate, the presser plate having flanges overlapping parts of the hase for guiding the presser plate relative to the base springs located intermediate the presser plate and the base, w second presser plate hingedly connected to the base5 the first named presser pla-te being located between the seecnd named presser plate and? the base', means 'for securing the second named presser plate inxposition againsty the pressure of the said springs, and clips' located at the upper and lower eiids of the base.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed specification.
