l in knitting machinesl and the like and of the kind provided with means for relieving the tension ol? the yarn after the winding.A
rl`he object ol' the invention is to construct the bobbin so that the yarn can be withdrawn 'from the same without entanglement of .individual coils and with a minimum amount of resistance, and the invention consists essentially in forming a bobbin having a cylindrical upper portion and a conical, stepped lower portion, with longitudinal grooves and with expanding members ar-. ranged 1n said grooves so that they can be' withdrawn for relieving` the tension of the yarn.
' Another 'feature ot the invention consists in employing in connection with expanding elements in the form oi2 withdrawable bars arranged in longitudinal grooves7 a spreader by the removal of which the bars can be relieved ot pressure and Withdrawn without disturbing the yarn coils relative to one another.
Fig. l of the accoi'npanying drawings represcnts aside. view ot the improved bobbin, partly in section, and
Fig. 2, a plan of the same without the spreader and with two of the expanding members withdrawn.
The hobbin is formed with an upper c vlindrieal portion n, and ay conical stepped portion c. -lt has a central bore d for the reception ot' the winding spindle and longitudinal grooves n 'for the reception of bars f 'whereby the bobbin is expanded previous to the winding,
The bal-sf extend beyond the normal eircumferenco ol" the bohbin and support the yarn as the latter is wound on the same. 1When the cop is linished and after it has been removed from the spindle, the bars f are pushed down and withdrawn'from beneath so as to relieve the tension of the yar-n and allow it to retain its original elasticity. Fig. 2 Ishows two of the bars Withdrawn and the ensuing contraction of the'cop.
To facilitate the withdrawal of the bars and prevent the yarn windings from being disturbed in relation to one another, a
spreader is provided in the form of a grooved disc g which is inserted between the upper ends of the bars s o as to prevent them ll'rom bearing against the bottoms of the grooves c. rlhis spreading disc is withdrawn at the completion of the cop so as to enable the bars to recede and as they are thus relieved of pressure7 to be easily withdrawn trom the bobbin. y
The stepping ot thle conical portion c enables the yarn to be pulled off easily in the axial direction of the bobbin Without entanglement ot' the yarn windings. To prevent the coils on the cylindrical portion a froni'being entangled at'ter the yarn tension has been relieved, this portion is covered with fabric, rubber or other rictional material. The rubber covering Z) clamps the bars f to the spreader g and holds bot-h `in position on the bobbin. "[tv also retains the bars while thc spreader,` is being removed.
v1. A yarn bobbin of the character described having a 'cylindrical upper and a stepped lower portion as well as a series of longitudinal grooves and expanding members ar anged in Asaid grooves so that they can be withdrawn'ilor relieving the tension of the. yarn afterthe winding.
i3. The bobhin claimed in claim 1 and a withdrawable spreader for said expanding members whereby the pressure on the latter can bo relieved to facilitate their withdrawal.
3. A `varn bobbin of the character described having a cylindricalnpper and a,
stepped lower portion as well as a series ofv longitudinal grooves, expanding members arranged in said grooves so that they can hc withdrawn Jfor relieving the tension of the yarn after the winding, a Withdrawable spreader for said expanding members Whereby the pressure on the latter can be relieved to facilitate their Withdrawal7 and an elastic covering on the cylindrical portion adapted to clamp the expanding members, to the spreader and hold both in position on the bobbin.
