F. BODY VALVE SPRING LIFTER Filed March 2, '1927 Patented Jan. 24, 1928.
UNITED STATESg FRANK BODY, 0F- TRONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
VALVE-SPRING LINER.
Application led `March 2, 1927. Serial No. 172,130.
My invention relates to improvements in valve spring litters, and the object oit the invention is to 'devise a simple device by which a maximum power can be exerted in lifting the spring and `in which the operating lever is readily controllable by the operating hand to lock or` unlock as desired, and it consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter more particu-v larly explained. n
Fig. l isa side elevation oit my device showing it applied toa valve and valve spring, showing the parte ot the lifter in the initial position. i
Fig. 2 is asimilar view to Figure 1 showing the parts in the position they assume when the spring is lifted.
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view `through my device separated from the valve and taken on line 3 3 Figure 1.
In the drawing like characters of reiference indicate corresponding parts in each figure. i
l indicates a valve. 2 the stein, and 3 the spring abutting at one end against the engine body and at the opposite end against the usual cross pin ll.
In order to lift the spring 3 to remove the cross pin 4 I provide the following device.
The main traine of the device comprises a vertical portion 5 having a horizontally extending portion 6 at its upper endand a downwardly inclined portion 7 at its lower end. The vertical portion of the trame is provided with a ratchet rack 8.v
, 9 is an operating lever which is preferably Yformed of band iron bent to .itorm a double arm, the members 9 and 90 of which extend at each side ofthe inclined portion 7 of the frame. The lever 9 is pivoted at the end ot the portion 7 by across pin 9X.
10 is a locking dog. the upper end ot which engages the ratchet 8 and the lower end is formed into a V-shaped portion pro-v viding an upwardly extending arm 10d torming a thumb piece by which the upper end of the dog may` he thrown in and outk oi. engagement with the ratchet rack 8. Between the dog 10 and the vertical port-ion 5 of the frame is located a tension spring l1 secured at one end to the dog 10 as indicated at 11* and at the opposite end to the operating lever as indicated at 11.
`'i2 is a fork which is channel shaped. in cross sectionso as to fit around the end of the operating lever, and is secured thereto by means of a pivot pin 13. 14 is a. screw spindle which extends through a threaded orifice 15 formed in the outer end ot the arm 6, the lower' end of the spindle bearing against the upper tace of the valve l when the device is in operation.
In operating my device the lower end of the spindle 11i is placed upon the centre of the valve head 1 and Jthe forli 12 passed beneath the lower end ot the spring 3 so that the valve spindle 2 enters the crotch of the fork, the crotch being 'so formed as to permit the cross pin l passing therethrough. The angle ot the trame formed by the ver tical portion 5 and horizontal portion 6 is gripped in one hand of the operator and downward pressure is then brought to bear upon the outer end ot the operating lever 9. thereby `torcinn the valve spring upward into compressed position away fromV the cross'pin 1l.
When in this position the engaging end ot' the dog 10 enters one of the lower teeth ot' the ratchet 8 thereby holding the spring 3 in locked position. The cross pin 4 may then be removed. lVhen the cross pin 4 is removed the operator again grips the operating lever and depresses the thumb piece 10X` with his thumb thereby disengaging the dog l0 from the ratchet 8. Manual pressure on the lever 9 may then be gradually relieved to permit the spring to expand.
When the spring is fully expanded the spring lifter may then be removed and the spring removed from the valve spindle.
What I claim as my invention is A valve spring litter comprising a trame :formed by a vertical bar portion having a horizontal portion at its upper end and an inwardly extending portion at its lower end a double armed lever pivoted to the frame and between the arms of which the inwardly extending portion ot the frame extends. a pivot pin extending through the arms of the lever and through such inwardly eX tending portion, a fork member pivoted lo loo the inner end ot the lever, a dog pivoted f
