My invention relates to a combination bedtable and stand, more aptly designated as simply a bed-table, and the object is to provide a was particularly useful for bedridden persons but also useful stand or small table.

Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 5 designates a multiple armed base or spider each arm preferably having a rubber floor contacting button 6; The hub of base 5 isbored for slidably receiving a vertical tubular column 8, said hub having suitl able means such as a thumb screw 9 engaged in two parallel tongues 8A extending from the side'of the hub and adapted to be sprung toward each other to clamp the column tight.
10 is a horizontal arm suitably clamped or atiixed to the upper end portion of the columnlpreferably beingheld by a thumbscrew 11 clamping clevis jaws 10A about the column. The outer end of arm 10 is offset upwardly comprising a hub 10B bored hori zontally for slidable engagement ofa tube or rod 12. The ends of the latter (12) are fixed in blocks 13 fastened to the under side of a table 14-, the tube 12 thus being fixed in spaced parallel relation to the table and preferably centrally thereof. The hub 10B is preferably made with spaced side wings 10B engaged by a thumb-screw 15 to clamp the hub at any place on pipe 12. To prevent tilting of the table from a horizontal plane I may provide a longitudinal groove or keyway 12G at the under side of pipe 12 and engaged by a spring pressed pin 16 in the bore of suitable lug formed onthe underside of arm 10 and having ahead 16H.

Thus the table 14 is normally retained horizontal but may be readily tilted by releasing pin 16, and the clamping screw 15, then applying screw 15 again to clamp the tube 1 and hold the table at any desired angle.
l have illustrated a table with aperimetral flange and which is desirable for setting a meal or a bed-ridden person, but it is obvious any other type of table may be used.

This cam 24th is continuously in engagement with the top end 25A of the vertical shank 5 slid-able vertically within the housing 22 and parallel to the column 8, said vertical shank comprising a part of an l.-shaped shoe 2-526. The horizontal part of the shoe, 26, encircles the column 8 loosely, as at 268 Fig. 5, and beyond the column comprises a horizontally disposed upwardly corrugated face 26B. 22L (Fig. 5) is a horizontal ledge in housing 22, bored for insertion of shank 25 upwardly and 27 is a diametral stop pin in shank 25 below ledge 22L and between said pin and the bottom of shell 22 is inserted a compression coil spring 28 which keeps shoe 26 impelled; upwardly at all times. The said shoe is thus adapted to frictionally engage the underside or edge of any horizontal element such as the side rail 21 of a bed, as in Fig. 1. To release the shoe from said position it is only necessary to swing the cum lever 24.- outwardly and down, as from the dotted to the full line position in Fig. 1, causing the cam 24A to press shank 25 and shoe 26 downwardly enough to release the shoe when it is desired to move the table away from the bed. If the device is to be set for rails 21 at diii'erent heightsthe housing 22 is simply loosenedby manipulating screw 23 and raising or lower ing the housing on column 8 until shoe 26, bears upwardly against the rail 21, after WhlCll screw 23 is again applied to tighten the housing on the column.
It is obvious that the entire device is thus easily set in position at the side of a bed and rigidity maintained by the springpressed shoe tending to maintain spreading condition between the floor and the bed rail.
The column 8 is also readily set at various elevations and the table 14: rigidly held horizontal or inany desired angle. The device may also be used for general table purposes by lining its top 14: concentrically above the column 8. It will also he further understood that the frictionally engaged parts such as tube 12 and column Sinay have the various slidahle parts fixed to them by means of set-screws, keys lents (not shown).

Ina portable stand of the class described, a base, an upright column slidable and securahle in said base, a horizontal arm detachahly securahle to the upper part oi? said column, a normally horizontal table supported by said arm, a bar lixed in parallel relation to "the under side of said table, means on the outer end 01: said arm slidahly engaging said rod and adapted to hold the and other equiva table in. any predetermined plane, means mounted on said column and adapted to he lined thereto at any predeterminedelevation and further means adapted to frictionally engagea lined horizontal element in proximity to the column, said friction means on the column comprising a vertically disposed housing hored for slidahly engaging the column, said housing being slitted vertically from its horedpart, atransverse pin connecting the opposite parts of said slittcd housing and threaded in one of said parts to clamp the housingto the column; and. a cam lever lulcrumed on said transverse pin, the lever of said cani exterlmly of the housing and the cam adanted to be actuated downwardly within the housing, an L-shaped shoe, the horizontal arm of said shoe adapted to engage upwardly a fixed elen'ient in spaced relation to the column, a compression coil spring about the vertical arm of said shoe and arranged to continuously impel the shoe upwadl the upper end of said vertical arm normally in frictional contact with the said cam and said shoe from the fixed element.
