Description

May 21, 1929. K. F. voss 1.71 .3
RESTAURANT SIGNALING DEVICE Filed June 26, 1926 Patented May 21, 1929.
UNITED STATES KARL FRIEDRICH voss, or COPENHAGEN, DENMARK.
' tubular standard 2 rises from the center of a PATENT FFIJC U RESTAURANT SIGNALING DEVICE.
Application filed June 26, 1925', Serial No. 118,786, and in Denmark June9, 1926.
Thisinvention is an improved restaurant.
the invention consists in the construction,
combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a restaurant signaling device in the form of a lamp and constructed and arranged in accordance with this invention. I
Figure 2 is a detail vertical sectional view showing the upper portion of the standard and a portion of the signal carrying rod and its connections. 4
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line A-B of Figure In the form of the invention here shown a vided at its lower endwith a cylindrical base 6 which is vertically movable in the standard and is provided with handles 5 Which operate in the slots 3 and areprovided at their outer ends with knobs 4 which may be readily grasped. At the upper end of the'base 6 is a-frusto-conical reduced portion 7 which has a circumferential groove 8. A split spring ring13 is arranged in said grooveand has a projection 14 directed inwardly.
A stop shoulder is arranged in the bore of tened to the standard as by meansof solder or the like and is provided with an annular groove 12 on its inner side. A source of light such as anelectric light bulb 10 which is preferably colored, mounted at the upper end of'the rod 9 for vertical movement therewith .and which, when the device is in normal arrangement, is used as a lamp, is in a-lowered position and arranged'within the shade 15.
For use forsignaling a waiter or other attendant, the standard 6 is raised manually by means ofthe handles 5 or'knobs 4 until said base 6 reaches the stop shoulder 11 and thus causes the light bulb to rise abovethe shade 15 and becprominentlydisplayed, to catch the attention of an attendant, the split spring ring 13 which is carried by the base6 snapping into the groove 12 and hence holding the light bulb in such elevated position. When the signal has been answered by awaiter, the standard 6 is pressed downwardly, the downward movement thereof causing the split spring ring 13 to disengage itself from the groove 12 as will be readily understood. To cushion the base 6 when it reaches the lower end of the standard and prevent noise a cushion 18 which may beof rubber or other suitable material is provided in the lower end of the standard as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1.
The base 1 is here shown as provided .on one side with an ash receiver 17 and onthe opposite side with a match case 16.
WhileI have herein shown and described apreferred form of the-invention, it will be understood that modifications may be made in the form, construction and proportion'of the several parts without departing from the'spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims. a Having now described myinvention, what I claim is: r r
1. A signaling device comprising a tubular standard having a slot and provided with an internally arranged stop shoulder a signal carryingrod having a cylindrical base ver- 'tically movable in said standard and provided with a handle which extends through aid slot for manual operation f id Signal bar and a spring carried by said stop should .160
and active to secure said signal-rod.
2. A signaling device of the class described 7 comprising a tubular standard having a vertical slot in one side and provided in its bore with a sleeve having an internal annular groove forming a stop shoulder, a signaling element, a rod to which said element is attached, said rod having a cylindrical base vertically movable in the bore of the standard and provided With a reduced portion having an annular flange, a split ring spring mounted in the groove of saidsleeve and active to engage in said groove of the rod base to releasably secure the signal in raised position, said base having a handle extending 10 through and movable vertically 1n said slot of the standard.
In Witness whereof I aflix my signature.
KARL FRIEDRICH voss.
