indefinitely long period.
Another object of the invention is to supply a compositepost of the instant type that is readily adapted for construction in the process of the erection of a rope guard rail.
A further object is to produce a post in eluding a. easingand a core of concrete. the I casing not only supplying a protecting jacket for the concrete and lending strength thereto, but providing the form for the molding of said concrete core.
Another object is to provide a composite post of the present type wherein provision is made for the contraction and expansion of the concrete core.
An additional object of the invention is to provide an improved method for making a guide rail post, wherein different steps in the construction of the post are co-ordinated to advantage with certain phases in the erection of the guard rail structure. 1
With the foregoing and other, objects in view, which will appear in the following description, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed. i
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating a number of posts embodying my invention and put to use in a guard railstructure: Fig. 2 is a view of one of said posts, the lower portion thereof being shown in section and the upper portion in elevation; Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the upper portion of said post; Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional View taken on the line H of Fig.3; Fig. 5 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation, the same illustrating the upper end of i a post embodying my invention and showing. particularly. an alternate form of cap therefor; Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5 and Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view of an alternate form of post embodying my invention. Referring to the drawings. it will be understood that my invention embodies a post (Fig. 2) including a permanent casing 10 Serial No. 14,446.
and core 11 of concrete therein. This coinposits post is preferably made in conjunctlon with the erection of a guard rail structure of which said post is a part. The casand like deterioration by the elements, and which has those qualities that lend reinforcemerit to the core 11. This casing 11 is planted in a post hole (Fig.2), the upper end of said casing being equipped with a rope supporting hook 12 of ordinary pat tern. The shank 12 of the hook 12 is passed through diametrically opposed openings 13 in the casing 10. The headof llllGyllOOli 12 ing 10 of asbestos-wood or other suitable composition that is proof against fire, decay" receives a wire rope, as at 14. The threaded end'of the shank 12 takes a nut '15, which, when turned against a washer 16 abutting the casing 10, causes the tip of the head of the hook 12 to be drawn flush with the casing 10 and thereby secure the rope 14;
against dislodgment from said hook 12; The casing 10, planted in its permanent position in a post hole provides a mold into which concrete, constitutin'g the core 11. is poured. In this connection it will'be observed that the concrete 11 stops shortof theupper edge of the casing 10 and that-a different material is employed to fill and capsaid casing. Thiscapping'material may be of cement or other suitable substance capable of being moldedin thec-asing and shaped over the upper edge thereof to form afcap 17 to keep the interior of the post, dry and thereby protect the concrete core 11 and the inner portion of the casing 10. After the concrete core 11 has become set. the rope 14 is tightened through the medium of the usual anchoring devices and the guard is complete. Having performed its use as a mold, plugged at the bottom and supported by the earth about it during the pouring process, the casing 10 provides a permanent protective jacket for the concrete core 11, said jacket being capable of indefinitely long wear and serving as an effective reinforcement for the core 11 under such strains as may be directed against the post. I
The casing 10 may have a split joint as at 10 reaching longitudinally thereof. Thus split. the casing 10 accommodates for expansion and contraction of the core 11, And further provision for expansion may be made by pouring the concrete core 11 about a temporary core strip (not shown) held radially of the casing 10, then withdrawing said core strip before the concrete becomes hard and thereafter filling the formed segsaid casing. from spreading not only when the concrete core 11 is iming] poured, but after that time, as well. A crown 18 (Fig. designed to encompass tliertop of the easing may be used to protect the core 11 and to; keep the casing:- 10 from spreading at the joint 10".. Saide'rownJlB may be cement in its application tothe top of the rial incapable of hardening said latter part sealedto the top of the post by thecement cap 17, Whichservesns a. container for the post.
Changes in thespecifie form of? my invention, aslierein disclosed, may made within the scope of What is claimed without ideparting from the spirit oh my invention.
Having; described in invention. what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patentis: i v
1.. A past including a concrete core. a permanent core reinforcing casing in Will ch said core is molded, said casing having a split joint extending longitudinally thereof, a tie member reaching transversely through opwsite sides of the casing and intersecting the diametrical plane of said joint... 7
2. A. post including; a core, a permanent core reinforcing casing in which said core is cnst alpart of said core beingof concrete material and another partthereof of mate comprising a relatively small segment of the core, said casing having a split joint extending longitudinally thereof and offset from the non-hardening core segment.
3. A post including a core, a permanent core reinforcing casing in which said core is cast, a part of said core being of concrete material and another part thereof of material incapable of hardening, said latter part comprising a relatively small segment of the core, said casing having a split joint extendinglongitudinally; thereofi and a tie member reaching through opposite sides of the casing and intersecting the dinmetrical plane of said joint. i i i 4. A post inchidinga concrete core, a permanent core reinforcing casing having a split jointexrtending longitudinally thereof, and a tie member reaching transversely through opposite sides of the casing and intersecting the (liametricalplane of said ]o1nt. said casing comprising a mold in which the core is cast about said he member.
5. A post including a concrete core, a per manent core reinforcing casing; 1mwhicl1 said means for holding said casing in close encircling position about said core;
In testimony whereof, I have signed mv name to thisspecification.
