Another object of the invention is to supply a compositepost of the instant type that is readily adapted for construction in the process of the erection of a rope guard rail.
A further object is to produce a post in eluding a. easingand a core of concrete. the I casing not only supplying a protecting jacket for the concrete and lending strength thereto, but providing the form for the molding of said concrete core.
Another object is to provide a composite post of the present type wherein provision is made for the contraction and expansion of the concrete core.
An additional object of the invention is to provide an improved method for making a guide rail post, wherein different steps in the construction of the post are co-ordinated to advantage with certain phases in the erection of the guard rail structure. 1
With the foregoing and other, objects in view, which will appear in the following description, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed. i
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating a number of posts embodying my invention and put to use in a guard railstructure: Fig. 2 is a view of one of said posts, the lower portion thereof being shown in section and the upper portion in elevation; Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the upper portion of said post; Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional View taken on the line H of Fig.3; Fig. 5 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation, the same illustrating the upper end of i a post embodying my invention and showing. particularly. an alternate form of cap therefor; Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5 and Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view of an alternate form of post embodying my invention. Referring to the drawings. it will be understood that my invention embodies a post (Fig. 2) including a permanent casing 10 Serial No. 14,446.
and core 11 of concrete therein. This coinposits post is preferably made in conjunctlon with the erection of a guard rail structure of which said post is a part. Thiscapping'material may be of cement or other suitable substance capable of being moldedin thec-asing and shaped over the upper edge thereof to form afcap 17 to keep the interior of the post, dry and thereby protect the concrete core 11 and the inner portion of the casing 10. After the concrete core 11 has become set. the rope 14 is tightened through the medium of the usual anchoring devices and the guard is complete. Having performed its use as a mold, plugged at the bottom and supported by the earth about it during the pouring process, the casing 10 provides a permanent protective jacket for the concrete core 11, said jacket being capable of indefinitely long wear and serving as an effective reinforcement for the core 11 under such strains as may be directed against the post. I
The casing 10 may have a split joint as at 10 reaching longitudinally thereof. Thus split. the casing 10 accommodates for expansion and contraction of the core 11, And further provision for expansion may be made by pouring the concrete core 11 about a temporary core strip (not shown) held radially of the casing 10, then withdrawing said core strip before the concrete becomes hard and thereafter filling the formed segsaid casing. from spreading not only when the concrete core 11 is iming] poured, but after that time, as well.
