Mostowners of automobiles are members of 'some automobile club or association, or carry insurance ontheir cars.` As evidence of Such facts, the owners receive a'plate in- 5 dicative of the club, association, or insurance company, to be attached to the front end of the car.
Heretofore, suchplates have been provided with flexible Wires either soldered or brazed to the back of the plate or passe-c through the plates with retaining heads, whereby the plates may he positioned and secured on the front of the radiator cores of the cars. Other means, such as studs permanently fixed to the plates or passed through the plates have been employed. fill of such means, however, have become less if not entirely inoperative through the advent of the radiator shutter which covers the front side of the radiator core and there-y fore prevents display of such plates thereon. 1t has, therefore, become necessary to attach the plates to some other member ofthe car, and the most satisfactory member is the usual transverse brace or tie rod between the fenders .or head lamps or a front bumper bar. is such braces, rods, and bars vary considerably in cross-sectional shape and size, the old means of Wires or studs being spaced apart at a fired distance can not be employed to meet such variations. Moreover, studs or Wires permanently fined to the plates interfere greatly in shipping1 the plates in quantity.
This invention overcomes all these difliculties by providing the means for attaching the plates that is universally adapted to the entire range of sizes and shapes of braces, rods, and bars encountered in auto mobile practice, and is described in roten ence to the accompanying drawing, 1u
Fig. 1, is a side elevation of the attaching means supporting; a plate in relatimrto a section of small diameter tubing;
Fig. 2, a rear elevation of the attaching` means; Y
Fig. 3, an end elevation of the attaching means; i

parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
` To the back of the plate 10 to be supported or attached is brazed, Welded, or soldered (the method of axing being1 immaterial) a bar 11, so that the bar becomes firmly and permanently secured to the plate 10. The bar 11 has a central inverted Ll-section portion to provide the surface 12 .spaced above the plate 10.
The surface 12 has a central opening 18 cut through, and extending centrally of the surface 12 each Way from the opening 13 are the slots lll' and 15, the slots terminating before reaching` the outer ends of the surface 12. A square-headed bolt 16 is entered by its head 17 through the opening 13 to be engaged by the slot 111, the head 17 beingthereby retained from the under side of the surface 12. Similarly, a bolt 1S is entered in the opening 13 and moved into the other slot 15 to-have its head 19 retained under the surface 12.
The plate 1G is then presented to the supporting; rod 2O in 1, or any other available support such as the har 21 in Fig. 5, to have the bar 11 transversely Contact the rod 2O bythe surface 12 with the bolt 16 passing to one side of the rod 2O and the bolt 1S to the other side. 'lhe tivo bolts 16 and 18 are moved in the slots 14: and 15 to Ward the rod 2() therebetween, and a har 22, ha 7ing; the rod contacting feet 23 and 211 with the outwardly extended central invertved tl-section therebetween7 is presented behind the rod 2G to permit the bolts 1S and 18 to extend therethrough.
The section 25 perforated with a plural ity of closely spaced holes 26 through which the bolts 16 and 18 may selectively be passed as determined by the diameter or Width of the rod 20. it lock Washer 27 and Wing nut 28 is used on each bolt 16 and 18 to hear against the surface whereby the tivo feet 23 and 24 press against the rod 2O to grip it firmly against and on the surface 12, which in effect is a grip on the rod between the two points from the rear side and the single point on the forward side.
[is above indicated, the bolts 16 and 18 may be spaced apart in the slots 1st and 15 to accommodate various sizes of supporting rods and the like. Also, it is to be noted, that the bolts 16 and 18 are of sufficient length to accommodate the varying` size of supports. lhile the plate l() here shown is eireular in shape, sueh shape immaterial to the invention as the har 'll may he attaehetl to the haelt ol an)Y other shaped plate.
