The invention described herein may be used by the Government, or any of its officers or employees in prosecution of work for the Government, or by any other person in the United States, without payment to me of any royalty thereon, in accordance with the act of March 3, 1883. y
This invention relates to a mount guns.
In the construction of Wheeled gun mounts it is desirable that the lower carriage be connected to the axle in such a mannor that the mount may travel over rough ground without injurious shocks and strains and that the connection be rendered comparatively rigid and free from vibration when the gun is in the firing position.
In the traveling position the carriage is suspended by means of suitable springs but for thing the weight of the carriage must be relieved from the springs and a rigid or semi-rigid connection established usually by passing a pin through the axle and the carriage. Vfith the type of pin shown in Patent No. 1,579,484 condiserable difficulty has been experienced in moving the 'pin to its operative or firingvposition and accordingly it is one of the objects of the present invention to provide positive meansfor rotating the pin.
Another object consists in providing an areuate bearing for the carriage so thatit may have relative angular movement with respect to the axle in both the traveling and firing positions.
l/Vith these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel ar-' rangement and combination of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made withinthe scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference:
The gun mount includes an axle 5 which passes within a housing 6 at the forward portion of the bottom carriage 7 and which is capable of vertical movement with respect thereto.
The carriage is resiliently connected to "the axle by means of a leaf spring 8 hung from the axle by arms 9 and is supported thereby normally in the traveling posit-ion. In order that the members may have relative angular movement when in the firing well as in the traveling position, the bearing 10 on which the carriage rests is preferably arcuate and carries an upstanding guide pin 11 disposed in a transverse slot 12 in the housing 6.
The pivot pin 13 carried by the axle is of the usual cylindrical type except that adjacent the axle it is symmetrically cut away to form oblong portions 14 positioned in bearings-15 and 16, respectively, in the front and rear vertical walls of the housing. As noted in Fig. 2, these hearings are partially circular and partially rectilinear while as seen in Fig. 6 the opening 17 in the axle is of similar outline to provide for insertion of the pin. In the traveling position when the Weight of the carriage is borne by the spring, the oblong portions of the pin are in the horizontal or inoperative adjustment and in the firing position theoblong portions are in the vertical adjustment engaging the bear ings and consequently restraining the carriage against vertical movement.
For the purpose of rotating the pin to its operative position in taking the weight of the carriage off the spring there is provided a self locking worm gearing comprising a worm 18 meshing with a worm wheel 19 on the foremost end of the pivot pin.
Important advantages gained by placing the bearings in the carriage instead of the axle consist in the reduction in the cost of construction'and in the fac tthatas the c-a'rv riage rocks, the vertical adjustment of-the pivotwith respect to its hearings will not be disturbed.
