The present invention relates to a safety device so constructed and arranged as to prevent the release of the firing-pin before the breech-block reaches full closing position; such device comprising a spring-actuated member having a locking tooth which normally holds the pin against operation but whlch is automatically disengaged 'by Referring more particularly to the drawing, 5 indicates the breech-block, and the firing-pin. The upper part of the block has formed in it a longitudinal slot 5' which extends almost to the rear end thereof and opens throughout its entire length into the bore of the block; the top face of the block at the extreme rear end of the slot comprising a pair of'upwarly and rearwardly inclined surfaces 3 (Fig. 3) which are disposed at opposite sides of the slot.
The locking or safety device 1, best shown in Fig. 2, is mounted to slide vertical] in a suitable housing located above the s t in the breech-block 5, and is provided at its lower end with a tooth 2 which directly alincs with said ,slot, so that it normally tends to enter the same, due to the downward pressure imposed upon the locking slide by a spring 4 as represented in Fig. 1.- A pair of wings-3 is also provided upon the bottom of the slide at opposite sides of tooth 2, and these wings are positioned to be struck by the inclined surfaces 3' on the breech-block so as to coact therewith in raising the slide against the pressure of spring 4; for which urpose, the under faces of the wings are li ewise inclined in conformity with theaforesaid surfaces 3, so that the efiect is that of two coacting pairs of cams. It will be recalled, however, that the cams 8' are located substantially at the rear end of the breech-block, so that they will 'not engage thecams 3 until the breech-block com-' pletes its forward'movement. I
Finally, the firing-pin 6, which is movable through the bore of the breech-block as usual,
is provided upon its upper surface with an upstanding tooth 6, likewise arranged in positionto project into and travel through the breech-block slot 5', and to directly en- I gage the locking tooth 2.
Assuming, then, that the' breech-block and firing-pin are retracted, the tooth 6 will be located at the front end of-slot 5 and will be engaged and held by the tooth 2 on the locking slide 1, which latter, at thattime,
is depressed to its full extent by spring 4'. Hence, when the breech-block moves forward to close the breech, the firing-pin remains locked in its retracted or cocked position, due to the engagement of teeth 6' and 2; but
just as the block completes its closing stroke,
however, its cams 3 hit against the under surfaces of the wings 3 on the locking slide 1 and 11ft the same far enough to disengage tooth 2 from tooth 6,.this being the precise position illustrated in the drawing. Thenand not until thenthe firing-pin is released and is free to make its active stroke in the usual way when the gun is fired.
I claim as myinvention:
1. In an automatic fire-arm, in combination, a-sliding breech-block having an axial bore extending through it, and a longitudinal slot in its upper portion opening into suchi bore; a firing-pin movable through said bore a safety device having a locking part projecting through said slot and nor 'mally engaging the firing-pin to hold it in retracted -pos1tion;.and means for auto- .matically disengaglng said locking part from said firing-pm at the moment the breech-block reaches fully-closed position. i
2. In an automaticfire-arm, in combination, a sliding breech-block having an axial bore extending t foughit, and a longitudinal slot in its upper portion opening into suchbore; a firing-pin movable through said bore; a spring-pressed safety slide havin a locking tooth which projects through sa1d slot and normally engages the firingpin to .hold it in retracted position; and means for automatically raising'said slide to disengage its tooth from the firing-pin tooth that is normally engaged by the tooth on the safety slide.
4. In an automatic fire-arm, in combination, a slidingbreech-block having an axial bore extending through it, and a longitudinal slot in its upper portion opening into such bore; a firing-pin movable through said bore; a safety device having a locking part projecting through said slot and normally engaglng the firing-pin to hold it in retracted position; and coacting means on the breech-block and safety device for automatically disengaging said locking part from said firing-pin at the moment the breech-block reaches fully-closed position.
5. In an automatic fire-arm, in combination, a sliding breech-block having an axial boreextending through it; and a longitudinal slot in its upper portion opening into such bore; a firing-pin movable through said bore; asafety device having alocking part projecting through said slot andnor-v ,mally engaging the firing-pin to hold it in retracted position; and coacting cam means tion, a sliding breech-block; 'a firing pin; a

6. Im an automatic fire-arnn'in combination, asliding breech-block having an axial bore extending through it, and a longitudinal slot in its upper portion opening into such bore; a firing-pin movable through said bore; a spring-pressed safety 'slide having a locking tooth which projects through said slot and normally engages the firingpin to hold it in retracted position; and coacting means on the, breech-block and safety slide for automatically lifting the latter at. the moment said breech-block reaches fully-closed position so as to dising a lockin bore extending through it, and a longitudinal slot in its upper portion 0 ening into such bore; a firing-pin movab e through said bore; a spring-pressed safety slide hav- 5 tooth which projects through said slot an normally engages the 'firingpin to'hold it in retracted position; and coacting cammeanson the-breech-block and safety slide adapted to strike each other and thereby lift the slide, at the moment said breech-block reaches fully-closed position so as to disengage the tooth on said slide from the firing-pin.
8. In an automatic fire-arm, in combination, a sliding bICaCh-blOCk; a firing pin;
a spring-pressed safety device having a locking part which normally engages the firing;
pin to hold it against movement; and coacting means onsaid safety slide and breechblock for automatically disengaging said locking part from the firing-pin at the moment the breech-block reaches fullyclosed position.
9. In an automaticfire-arm, in combinapin to hold it against movement, and also having a pair of cams arranged at opposite sides of such tooth; and a; air of cams at the rear end of the breechlock to engage the first-named cams at the moment said breech-block reaches full -closed position so as to lift the safety device and thereby release its tooth from the'firin -pin. a
10. An arrangement according to claim 9', in which the firing-pin is provided at its rear end with an upstanding projection which is normally engaged by the locking tooth on the safety device.
