This invention relates generally to stokers and refers more particularly"7 to that type in which a ram is employed for forcing the fuel into the furnace.
One of the essential objects of the invention is to provide the ramsA of such stokers with a simple driving mechanism in which yieldable means is preferably used for the purpose of preventing breakage of the parts if an unusual obstruction is encountered by the ram during operation of the Stoker.
Another object is to provide a stoker thatl is simple and compact in construction, eiicient in operation and inexpensive to maintain.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Heretofore rams of stokers have been pro vided with driving mechanism in which one or more pins are adapted to be sheared oit, if abnormal resistance is encountered by the sectional view rams, to prevent the parts of the Stoker ber from being damaged. However this is ob- 'jectionable for; the reason considerable time is required to replace a broken pin or memprelimnary to resuming operation after the obstruction has been removed. With the present invention this objectionable feature is overcome by providing a permanent yieldable driving connection between the rams and pitman rods.
Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates a ram case that opens into the furnace 2 and has a hopper 3. 4 is a pitman rod for reciprocatin a suitable ram 5 in the case 1. Any suitable means (not shown) may be employed for actuating the pltman rod 4.

To accomplish this I preferably posit-ion two concentric coil springs 6 and 7 respectively within the ram 5 between the head 8 thereof and the head 9 of a plunger or shoe 10 slidably engaging the inner walls of the ram. These springs may be formed'of any suitable material such as steel. Jointly the will sufiice to operate the ram under or inary conditions. For connecting the ram 5 to the pitman rod 4 I preferably provide a suitable wrist pin '11 that extends through aligned circular openings 12 in the sides of the shoe 10 and engages aligned longitudinally extending slots 13 in the sidewalls of the ram 5. Thus, with this construction,
power will be transmitted from the pitman rod 4l through the shoe 10 and springs 6 and 7 respectively to the ram 5 for operating vWhile it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readil apparent, I desire to have it understoo that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown andy described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope ofv what is claimed.
t What I claim as my invention is:
1. In combination with a Stoker for furnaces, provided with a hopper adapted to receivefuel and a ram case below and in the hopper for reiving fuel therefrom, a ram mounted for reciprocation in said ram case for forcing the fuel into the furnace, a pitman rod adapted -to impart reciprocatory movement to said 5 ram, a air of eoaxially arranged spiral springs or normally transmitting the movement from the pitman to the ram, and being of suicient strength to constitute the sole agen for moving the ram to force the fuel l into t e`furnace, said spring: being adapted to permit reciprocation of e pitman without movement of the ram and to absorb the thrust of the pitman upon the encountering oi an unusual obstructlon by said ram.
