This invention relates to improvements in grinding machines.
The main objects of this inventlon are First, to provide an improved grinding machine especially adapted for the grmding of valve seats in internal combustion engines.
Second, to provide an improved grindlng machine ada ted for the grinding of valve seats which 1s of large capacity and at the same time performs very accurate work.
Third, to provide an improved grinding machine of the class described whlch 1s readily adapted to the particular work.
Objects relating'to details and economies of construction and operation rwill delinltely ap 'ear from the detailed vdescrlption to f llow' .I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means descrlbed in the following specification. The lnvention is clearly defined and pointed out m the clalms.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention isl clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, formmg a part of this application, in which:

In the structure illustrated, the driving :motor 7 is carried by brackets 8 "and `the cross piece 9 as shown in Fig. I. The tubular tool carriage support 10 is arranged through a central o ening 11 in the spiderlike top member 1 of to receive the feed nut 12 which is arranged the -tool carria e.
being slotted at the frame and threaded in a seat 13 provided therefor. At its lower end this support is provided with a flange 14. The driving spindle 15 is arrangcd vertically through the support and is provided with a pulley 16 connected by the belt 17 to the motor. At its lower end the spindle 15 is provided with a conical friction driving disc 18. The spindle is'supported in an adjustable bearing member 19 slidable in the tubular body of the support and held yieldingly downward by means of the coiled spring, 20. The movement of this bearing member is limited but is suflicient to permit a driving gear 18 being held downwardly under spring tension.
The tool carriage 21 is mounted on the underside of the flange 14, the tool carriage having an upwardly projecting flange 22 embracing the fiange 14 and being retained thereon by the rin 23 to the'underside of which is secured t e annular gear 24, this gear bearin upon the flange 14. The tool carriage is riven from the elongated driving` pinion 25 on the spindle, a gear 26 meshing with this pinion and being connected 'to the gear`27 meshing with the annulan gear 24, these gears 26 and 27 being carried by the stub shaft 28 on the flange of the support. Thus arranged, the rotation of the spindle drives the tool carriage.
The grinding tool 29 is carried by the spindle 30, this-spindle being carried by the bearing 31 mounted for longitudinal reciprocation 'in the bracket 32 depending from This bracket is adjustably mounted o`nt e 33' to receive the screw '34.
' The spindle is provided with a driven friction 'gear ,35 c'o'acting with the driving friction gear 18.; The gear 18 being conical permitsthe arrangement of the tool spindle at an angle and maintains the constant driving engagement of the too1` spindle gear during the reciprocating movement. The spring 20 also serves to hold the tool to the work. The purposeof reciprocating the tool is to'provide for an evenwearing of the grinder. Substantially the entire periphery of the gear is brought into action in grindinthe valve seat, as is indicated at 36.

sprmg 42 moves the spindle in one direction and holds the roller 38 in engagement with the cam.
I provide a pilot or guide 43 which is adapted to en age the valve stem opening in an internal combustion engine, this pilot being carried by the plate 44 which is adapted to rest upon the work. This plate is connected to the carriage to rotate therewith by means of the post 45 comprising telescoping sections or members, the spring 46 being arrangedwithin the post to urge the plate against the work. The plate is provided With a threaded socket 47 which permits the changing of the pilot for work having valve stem o enings of different sizes, that is, the pilot s ould correspond in diameter to the diameter of the valve stem for which the seat is ground.
My improved grinding machine enables very rapld Work and also very accurate work. The structure also has the advantage of being simple and economical and easily manipulated.
I have illustrated and described my imrovements in an embodiment which I have ound practical. I have not atternpted to illustrate and describe certain other modifications and adaptations as I believe the disclosure made Will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a valve seat grinding machine, the combination of a frame adapted to rest upon the work, a tubular tool carriage support having a flange at its lower end, a feed nut for said sup ort carried by said frame, a driving spin e disposed through said support and provided With a pulley at itsgouter end, a conical friction driving gear at its inner end and an intermediate driving pinion, a bearing for said spindle slidable on said support, a spring acting to urge said spindle inwardly, a tool carriage rotatably mounted on said flange on said support and 'having a downwardly projecting tool spindle bracket thereon, a gear secured to said carriage, gears connecting said driving pinion With said gear onsaidcarriage, a tool spindle provided with a driven friction gear coactin With said driving gear, a bearing for sai tool spindle reciprocatingly mounted in said bracket, an annular cam on said support, a lever pivotally mounted on said carriag to coact With said cam and operatively connected to said tool spindle bearing, a positioning pilot, a supporting plate therefor adapted to rest upon the work, and posts connecting said supporting plate to said carriage comprising telescoping Sections, said posts having extending Springs arranged therein.
2. In a valve seat grinding machine, the combination of a frame adapted to rest upon the Work, a tubular tool carriage support having a flange at its lower end, a feed nut for said sup ort carried by said frame, a driving spin e disposed through said support and provided wth a pulley at its outer end, a conical friction driving gear at its inner end and an intermediate driving pinion, a bearing for said spindle slidable on said support, a spring acting to urge said spindle inwardl a tool carriage rotatably mounted on sai flange on said support and having a downwardly projecting tool spindle bracket thereon, a gear secured to said carriage, gears connecting said driving pinion With said gear on said carriage, a tool spindle provided with a driven friction gear coacting with said driving gear, a bearing for said tool spindle reciprocatingly mounted in said bracket, an annular cam on said support, and a lever pivotally mounted on said carriage to coact with said cam and operatively connected to said tool spindle bearing.
3. In a valve seat grinding machine, the combination of a frame adapted to rest upon the work, a tubular tool carriage support having a flange at its lower end, a feed nut for said support carried by said frame, a driving spindle disposed through said supportand provided with a pulley at its outer end, a conical friction driving gear at its inner end and an intermediate driving pinion a bearing for said spindle slidable on said support, a spring acting to urge said spindle inwardly, a tool carriage rotatably mounted on said flange on said support, a gear secured to said carriage, gears connecting said drivingpinion with said gear on said carriage, a tool spindle provided with a driven friction gear coacting with said driving gear, a positioning pilot, a supporting plate therefor adapted to rest upon the work, and collapsible posts connecting said supporting plate to said carriage.
4. In a valve seat grinding machine, the combination of a frame adapted to rest upon the work, a tubular tool carriage support having a flange at its lower end, a feed nut for said support carried by said frame, a driving spindle disposed through said support and provided with a pulley at its outer end, a conical frictlon driving gear at its inner end and an intermediate driving pinion, a bearing for said spindle slidable on said support, a spring acting to urge said spindle inwardly, a tool carriage rotatably mounted on said flange on sad support, a gear secured to said carriage, gears connecting said driving pinion With said gear on said carriage, and a tool spindle provided with a driven frii'tion gear coacting with said driving gear.
