Description
a. MORAHANf Mouth-Piece for Tobacco-Pouch.
No. 165,606, Patentedlulyl3,1875.
ETERS, PM TU-UTNDGRAPMER, WASHINGTON D C.
EN FFIGE.
BERNARD MORAHAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOUTH-PIECES FOR TOBACCO-POUCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,606., dated July 13, 1875; application filed J une 3, 1875. I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERNARD MORAHAN, of Brooklyn, Kings county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements relating to Mouth-Pieces for Tobacco-Pouches, and analogous articles, of which the following is a specification:
I provide a short-threaded tube peculiarly flanged in the lower end, whichI insert into the mouth of the bag, with the flange innermost, and screw down upon this another shorter tube, correspondingly flanged. I thus seize the gathered edge of the bag, and conflne it firmly between the two flanges, which are adapted to receive and hold the thick and more or less irregular material there accumulated. A screw-cap being then screwed down upon the projecting end of the inner tube, forms a convenient means for tightly closing and for conveniently opening the mouth at will.
The device may be conveniently changed from one pouch to another, and, with careful usage, will endure for an indefinite period.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification, and form what I consider the best means of carrying out the invention as applied to small muslin pouches used for fine-cut tobacco.
It will be understood that the device may be used for various other purposes; but I consider'its use on tobacco-pouches to be the chief.
Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the device complete. Fig. 2 is a plan view representing the pouch after the principal tube is set, and before the friction of the short length or follower.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
A is the muslin body of the pouch, and A the thick massof gathers which is formed around the mouth. B B is the principal tube, formed with a screw-thread around the body B, and with the flange B" turned up at its edge, as shown. 0 O is a shorter tube,
threaded on its interior to match upon the' tube B. The flange C is bent or inclined downward, so that the thick gathered edge A of the fabric A is accommodated in the cavity between the flanges B and O, and is firmly seized or held at the outer edges of those flanges.
The parts are so proportioned that on screwing down the flange-tube O (J, a portion of the inner tube B is left exposed above the upper edge of the tube 0, and receives the screwcap D, adapted to make a tight joint, and allow a convenient opening and closing.
FThe entire mouth-piece B B O O D may be readily removed from the pouch by separating the parts and slackening the gathering-string a, which gathers the mouth of the pouch. It may then be readily introduced into the mouth of another pouch. Thus my device may serve for an indefinite period, for any number of muslin bags or pouches.
Some of the features of the invention may be used with advantage without the others; but I prefer the whole together as represented.
I claim as my improvements in mouth-pieces for tobacco-pouches and analogous articles- 1. The combination of the threaded tubes B 0, having flanges B O, with the screw-cap l), and the pouch A, as and for the purposes specified.
2. The internal tube B, short external tube 0, pouch A, and screw-cap D, the latter adapted to be removed without disturbing the grasp on the mouth of the pouch, as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of May, 1875, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BERNARD MORAHAN. Witnesses:
WM. U. DEY, HENRY GENTNER.
