ASSIGI'EDE- TO THE SINGER llltslif'UZFJ-TCTUR- ENG CO MPANY, OF ELIZABETH, NE'W JERSEY, A GURIBORATIUIRT O13 hl'E'W SEWING-MACHINE CABINET.
Application filed November 10, 1925, Serial No. 68,063, and in Great Britain June 19, 1925.
This invention relates to devices for ini tially raising panels or covers affording no convenient finger grip, so that such covers may be readily grasped by hand and opened. For example. sewing machine cabinets are customarily constructed in the form of a library table. the top of which is formed with a rectangular aperture to receive the sewing machine; the latter being adapted to be dropped or swung through such aperture into a cavity or receptacle below the tabletop, when not in use. The table-top commonly includes an iii-set hinged panel or cover, preferably formed in hinged sections, which serves to close the aperture in the table-top when the machine is lowered; the panel or cover being thenfiush with the remainder of the table-top.
lVith a cabinet or other receptacle having a cover of this nature, it is ditficult to catch hold of the cover to raise the same. A finger grip set flush with the upper side of the cover has been proposed but such a device is conspicuous and mars the appearance of the table-top as a whole. Further, such finger grip is diilicult to grasp securely and is likely to cause injury to the finger nails of the user.
The present invention has for an object to provide a concealed and easily operated device for initially raising a cover so that it may be readily grasped and opened by the user.
To the attainment of the ends in view there is provided a device, preferably in the form of a push-rod, located at the side of the receptacle and extending into the latter, such rod having means at its inner end adapted to engage and lift the cover. Preferably, the rod is formed at its inner end with an inclined cam edge which engages and lifts the cover when the rod is pushed inwardly. A spring restores the rod to initial position, entirely at one side of the aperture closed by the cover, when the latter is released by the operator.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a sewing machine cabinet of the library table type embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3, Fig. 1. Fig. t is a similar view showing the cover rod proieeted into lifting engagement with the cover member ot the cabinet and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail perspective views of inset flush panel or cover 5 hinged at 6 to "the table-top 1. This cover is preferably made in three sections 5 5 and 5; the sec tions 5 and 5 being hinged together at 7, 7 and the sections 5" and 5 being hinged to gether at 8, 8. Alter the cover as a whole has been raised and the sewing machine swung upwardly through the aperture in the tabletop about its hinges l the sections 5* and 5 may be tolded under the section 5 as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and the front edge of the sewing machine bedplate l allowed to rest horizontally upon the ledge 9. The cover-sections 5 5, are retained in folded position, by means of the spring clip 10 which is mounted on the under side of the cover-section 5 and is adapted to yieldingly grasp the inclined pin 11 mounted on the under side of the cover-section 5 The invention comprises means for initially raising the cover 5 so that it may be readily grasped by the operator. To this end there is mounted in a concealed position on the under side of the overhanging end of the top 1 a guide-bracket 12 having a channelway 13 which receives the endwise slidable push-rod or bar 14-. The bar 14 is formed at its outer end with a head 15 carrying a positioning pin 16 for the outer end of the spring 17, the other end of which is seated in the aperture 18, Fig. 3, in the sidewall member 3 of the table. The bar 14 is formed at its other end with an upstanding lip 19 having a cam edge or cover-lifting wedge 20 which normally is disposed entirely at one side of the space directly, below the aperture in the table-top and hence does not otter any obstruction to the rai ing or lowering of the sewing machine. when the rod 14 is pushed inwardly the 9.0 the edge at the and lifts the same, 'as shown in Fig. 4;, so
that such cover may be readily grasped by the operator and hilly opened.
The present cover lifting device is entirely concealed, exceptfor the head 15 which 00- enpies an inconspicuous position-beneath the top 1 and there ere-no finger holes, knobs, or the like, to inelthe appearance of the table-top as a Whole. v
