. My invention relates to safety devices and particularly to safety devices which are adapted for attachment to washing machines, mixing machines, polishing machlnes,
and the like, which comprise a stationary cylinder enclosing revolving mechanism for operating upon articles placed Within the cylinder. Such machines are generallypro- Vided with a sliding door or cover on the side of the cylinder through which the ma: chine is charged, and it is highly desirable that the interior mechanism should be ren dered inoperative when this cover or door is open. It is equally desirable, that the cover or door of such machines cannot be opened without. stopping the machine,and
ation without closing the door.
Many machines of this character are driven by belts running quite close to the end of the machine, and this is particularly mechanism be operated without requiring the operator to swing lllS arm or body '111 the direction of the moving belt. It 18 also desirable that an interlocking mechanism of this character should be such that it is readily adaptable to cylinders of different size.
lVith the attainment of these ends in view, the objects of my invention are to provide a gear and cylinder interlock which may be operated by a direct push or pull away from or toward the front of the machine. Another object of my invention is to provide a device oi": this character which is adjustable to the extentthat it may be attached to cylinders of various machines without requiring a difierent set of parts for every type or size of machine. A further object of my invention is to provide means for accurately adjusting the gear interlock after the device has been attached to the machine.
With these objects in view my invention includes the novel elements and the combinations and arrangements of elements described below and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a fragmentary end elevation of a machineof the character described illus== heating the attachment of interlock;

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the stationary cylinder provided with the end or head, 2, and the sliding cover, 3. The mechanism within the cylinder, 1, may vary in character and is therefore notshown, but it isto be understood that this mechanism is drivenby the gear wheel, 4. The locking lug or rack, 9, may consist of a single casting provided with one or more teeth or projections adapted to interfit with the teeth on gear wheel, 4. Slidably mounted upon the top of the casting, 15, is the operating ca'm, 1, provided with the hand grip, 20, and the inclined cam surfaces, 21 and 22., Tire operating cam, 19, is provided with a central slot, 23, adapted to receive a holding-down cap screw, 2-1, which is threaded into the casting, 15. To prevent the operating cam from being jarred either from the locked or unlocked position 1 provide the helical spring, 25, which is compressed between the head of the cap screw, 25, and the top surface or the cam.
