Application filed September 11, 1926. Serial no. 134,346. I
This invention relates to water circulating systems for the coolmg ackets of internal I combustion engines.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character employlng a portion of the explosive pressure generated in the cylinder of the engine and so constructed that the heat which would ordinarily be transmitted to the cooling i fluid is dissipated and prevented from acting thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a'device of this character in which the rate of circulation can be regulated and the possibility of .the cooling fluid entering the cylinders is prevented.-
A further Object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including means relieving the cylinders of mission to the cylinder of a lubricant or priming fluid. 1
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying wherein for the purpose of, il-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an internal combustion engine having my improvements applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a vertical absorber; v
Figure 3 is a sectional view through the check valve casing and check valve.
Referring now more particularly to the. drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the water jacketed cylinder of an internal combustion engine and 11 the head thereof. With the water jacket of the cylinder cornsection of the heat municates one end of an inlet pipe 12, the
opposite end of which communicates with, a supply tank 13 of any suitable construction. With the outlet of the water jacket one end of an outlet pipe 14 communicates, this outlet pipe being extended above the level of water withinthe tank 13 and comtnunicating with the upper end of the tank,
as indicated at 15. Y I
In accordance'with my invention, I connect with the interior of the cylinder of the engine through the head 11 a small conduit 16, which small, conduit communicates through a heat absorber 17 and check valve 18 with one end of a conduit 19,.the oppothe engine 20 to permit ready starting or permitting adgine, if it is desired to site end of which communicates with the water thereof, as indicated at 20. In the conduit 19 is arranged a control'valve 21. The heat absorber element comprises a relatively hea'vybody having an inlet22 and an outlet 23 at opposite ends thereof.
The body is formed'interiorly with longitudinally extending passages 24-and 25 which are offset with respect to theinlet 22 and both of which communicate with the inlet 22.- The passage 24 at its upperend is likewise connected while the passage 25 is blind and communicates through a supplemental out-let 26 with a manually operable relief vave 27. The exterior of the body may be provided with cooling vanes plied to the cylinders of air cooled internal combustion engines, if so desired. At each explosion of the engine, a portion of the heated gases from the cylinder pass up wardly into the-heat absorber and through the channel 24 and outlet 23 to the check valve. The check valve is lifted by the force of the explosion and this force may be thus exerted against the body of the fluid contained within the water jacket, causing circulation thereof. The heat of the gases is collected by the head ofthe body and dissipated to the atmosphere. The check valve 18 is preferably provided with a relatively heavy body, which likewise. serves in dissipating the heat. This check valve further assists in preventing fluid from backing up through the heat absorber into the cylinders of the engine.
, prime or lubricate the same, lubricant can be introduced In starting the en-v jacket at the approximate center a with the outlet. 23,
28, such as are ordinarily apthrough the relief valve 27 to the cylinder,
The conduit 19 at some portion of its length must project above the highest point of the contact 14 in order to further reduce the possibility of any of the cooling fluids'reaching. the cylinders. In operation the: gases entering the water jacket force the water thus displaced is replacedby water entering throughthe pipe 12.
It will-be obvious that the'construction I rangeof change and modification without .materially departing from, the spirit of the invention and I do not wish to limit myself hereinbeforeset forth is capable ofa certain '100 i through pipes 14 and 15'to the tank. NVater the gas es ,-saic l passage with said tank,
to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.v
I claim v 1. In combination with a Waterjacketed internal combustion engine, a fluid supply tank for the Water jacket, inlet communicating With the Water the outlet pipe extending above the level of Water Within the tank, a conduit in communicationwith the interior of the cylinder of the engine and with the water jacket of the engine for directly transmitting a portionof the explosive force from the cylinder to the water jacket and means in said conduitvtor dissipatingthe heat oi explosive g'asesiron' theen 'ine pass ing 'therethrough comprising a relatively heavy metallicbody-having passage for being ofiset between the inlet and outlet ot the body to thereby permit the heat of the gases .to. be absorbed by the body, the exterioroif the body having cooling vanes. 1
I 2. In combination with a Water jacketed inand outlet pipes jacket and,
ternal combustion engine, a fluid supply tank for the Water jacket, inlet and outlet pipes communicating with the Water jacket and with said tank, the outlet pipe extending above the level of Water within the tank, a conduit in communication with of the cylinder, ofthe engine, and with the Water jacket of the engine for directly trans- 'mitting a portion of the explosive force from the cylinder to the ater acket, means 1n said signature.
