MACHINE FOR OPERATING UPON SOLES.
Application filed January 24, 1920. Serial No. 353,819.
The present invention relates to machines for operating upon shoe soles prior to their incorporation in boots or-shoes.
One object of the present invention is to provide. novel and improved mechanism for guiding and feedin shoe soles to the operating inst' umcntalitics of a machine and for disposingof the soles at the completion of the operation.
' Another object of the present invention is to provide n'iechanisin of this type which is particularly adapted to be embodied in a molding machine so that the machine as a whole wdibe relatively simple and compact in construction, ation.
To these endsthe invention provides a novel. organization comprising a magazine for soles, means for :teeding them severally to handling; mechani in and thence to oper ating instrumentalities. In the disclosed machine the solesai'e fed sidewise from the magazine and thence longitudinally to aposition between molds. and ejected from the molds after the molding operation.
the soles are fed through the molds, being ejected from the side opposite to that into which they are fed. The ejecting means is actuated by the molds themselves in opening after the molding" operation.
' Features of the invention further consist in certain. constructions arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed. the advantages of which will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the following description.

The present invention embodied. in a sole molding machine which is provided with two .ets of cooperating molds adapted to work ahernately. As the two sets ofmolds ;1' dtheii' associated mechanisms are of the same generalconstruction and mode of operation, only one set of molds and its associated mechanism is illustrated in the and specifically described herein.
The soles to be perated upon by each set of molds are contained in a magazine from which the soles a table. and after heine' nroperlv positioned inafter described, they "thwisc to the molds. een hus pre ntedto the during the ion of and t are severally delivered onto secured to the frame of the machine.
transferring it to timing of the sole between the molds is this operation the sole is discharged from the molds. The magazine and table are located at the rear of the molds with the magazine arranged above and at one side of the table, the soles being delivered sidewise from the magazine and the molded soles being discharged from the front of the molds. With this construction, it will be seen that the machine is as compact as possible and takes up a minimum amount of floor space, and the molds and magazine are conveniently accessible to the operator.
The molds of each set are arranged so that their heel ends are directed toward the rear of the machine and comprise cooperating up per and lower molds 2 and 4; respectively, (Fig. 1) the upper mold being fixed and the lower mold being movable toward and from the upper mold. The lower mold thus actuated by means of a toggle 6 connected through a link 8 with a crank 9 carried by a shaft 10. The crank shaft 10 is continuously driven through a gear 12 carried thereby which operatively engages a gear 1d carried by the driving shaft 16 of the machine.
In the illustrated machine the magazine for containing the soles to be operated upon, indicated at 18, (Figs. 1 and 2) is supported by vertically adjustable brackets 19 secured to the frame of the machine. The soles are delivered sidewise from the magazine through an opening 20 at the bottom of the inner wall thereof by means of a pusher or ejector 22. The ejector 22 comprises a plate mounted to slide upon the bottom wall of the magazine having its outer end pivotally connected to the upper end of an arm 2 1, the lower end of which arm is secured to a rock shaft 26. The rock shaft 26 is actuated to cause a sole to be ejected from the magazine near he limit of the downward movement of the lower mold 4, by means of an arm 28 having one end secured to the rock shaft and its other end provided with a roll engaging a cam slot 30 in an arm 32 projecting from the carrier for the lower mold.
The magazine 18 is located above and to one side of a table 34: upon which the soles drop by gravity as they are delivered from the magazine. The table 3 f comprises plates When a sole is thus delivered to the table 34 it is first positioned laterally and then angularly relaively to the molds and is then positioned longitudinally to bring its longitudinal center in a definite position relatively to the longitudinal center of the molds. The sole is then clamped in position and transferred a fixed distance to a position between the molds. By thus positioning the sole on the table and the molds, the proper posias sured irrespective of the width or the length of the sole. The means for thus positioning relatively and transferring the sole to the molds has the same construction and mode of operation, exceptas hereinafter described, as the machine illustrated and described in United States Letters Patent No. 1,-l91,28 l, granted April 22, 1924, on applicatlon of Lewis J. Bazzoni, to which reference may be had for a full and complete description of the parts of the machine not fully described herein.
The soles delivered to the table lare positioned laterally thereon by means of gages 36 (Figs. 2 to 5) which engage opposite sides of the sole. The gages 86 comprise arms projecting from sleeves or hubs 38 pivotally mounted on. vertical pins e0 mounted in a bracket 41 projecting from the magazine 18. The gages 36 are connected to move simultaneously toward and from each other by means of inter-meshing gear segments 12 projecting from the hubs 38. The gages are urged toward each other to engage the sole by means of a coiled spring e4.- having its ends connected to lugs d6 projecting from the hubs S The gages 36 are held separated sufficiently to permit the sole to be delivered from the magazine to the table by the engagement of a latch 48 with a downwardly extending arm e9 projecting from one of the hubs 38. The latch 48 comprises a lever pivoted at 50 on the bracket 41 projecting from the magazine 18. The latch 48 is urged in a direction tomaintain its forward end in locking engagement with the arm 49 by means of a torsion spring 52, this movement of the latch being limited by a stop pin 5% on the bracket 41. l f'hen the sole has been delivered to the table, the latch l-S released to permit the gages to be moved by their s ringt l into engagement witlthe sides of the sole to position the sole laterally. The
releasing of the latch is accomplished at this time by the engagement of a cam block 56 with the rear end of the latch, the cam blockbeing movable toward and from the molds by means hereinafter described, and the engagement of the cam block and latch occurring nearthe limit of the movement'of the cam block away from the molds.
The means for angularly and lon tudinally positioning the sole compris devices hereinafter descrlberhac. catch by a transferring slide 58 (Figs. 9. and 5) up-a which the cam block 56 is mounted. The
transferring slide is moimted in ways the table 34 forming the forward po upper gibs of the ways. The t slide is initially moved a distance depen upon the length of the sole toward the molds from the position shown in Fig. 5, by which movement the gaging devices are actuated. to position the sole angularly and longitudinally. The transferring slide is then moved a fixed distance to transfer the sole to the de sired position between the molds. The transferring slide is actuated by means of a slide 64: mounted in ways 66 beneath the transfer- ..rmg slide. The connection between the slides 8 and 6st to ,etl'ectthe initial movement or gages the rear side of the lower end of thetransferring slide comprises a lug (38 carried by the actuating Slltl'i '4: which en downwardly cuiwedmember 70 of a torlie-c arm 72 which constitutes one arm of a three arm lever 74:. pivotally mounted on a hori- .zontal pin 76 secured to the transferring .slide.

- At the completion of theangular positioning of the sole, the heel gage 8d cooperates with a toe gage 96 to position the sole longitudinally, the toe being moved toward the sole and heel gage, at. the same rate of speed as the movement of the heel its ionon the length of the sole. and 15) is of the described in said Patent No. 1.491.284.- The toe gage is swung upwardly and ismoved rd the sole by means of a rack 102 mounteu to slide on "he frame of the machine and operated by a pinion driven by a rack 98 which is actuated by engagement of a shoulder 1.04: on the lower end of the member 70 0? th three armed lever 74 with a transverse arm 106 gitudinalcenter in a definite position table 84 lrrespect-ive of the The toe gage 96 (Figs. 8

gripped between a jaw 112 arm of t re lever 74: and a st mounted on the feed slide in Fig. 9.
In order that the transferring slide 5 may be moved a fixed distance toward the molds after its (lCSCl'lbGCl initial movement. a measuring bar 118 employed whiclu during tie initial moven'ient of the transis held stationary and at the end of this movement is locked in position to the transferring slide. The contiiuied movement oi the actuating slide moves a member thereof into engagement with the measuring bar so that the two slides are again connected a d the transferring slide moved in unison with the actuating slide toward the molds. The measuring bar 116 extends through an aperture in the lower end of a depending arm 11. of the three armed lever 74 and is in sliding ei agement During the initia movement ot' the transferring slide the bar 116 is held sh tionary by the engagement of a b HS (Fig. 8) formed thereon with a t'llfilllflil 120 on a latch lever 122 pivoted upon the frame of the machine the latch lever being held in position against a stop 119 by a spring 12 When the three arm lever H is swung in a direction to arrest the initial movement of the transierring slide. the measuring bar is thereby moved to disengage the lug 118 from the latch lever 122,
whereupon the measuring bar is locked in position to the three arm lever 7 4. The locking of the measuring bar 116 to the three arm lever is accomplished by a locking device comprising an eccentric 124 pivoted upon the depending arm 117, which (Fig. 9)
when the lever 7 4 is swung in the direction under side of the transferrin slide. The
transferring slide is moved to convey the sole to the molds after the measuring bar 116 is locked to the three arm lever 74 b the engagement of an adjustable abutment screw 130, threaded through a lug on the actuating slide 64, with the rear end of the measuring bar.
During the first part of the final movement of the transferring slide toward the molds, the side gages 36 are disengaged from the sole so that they will not interfere with the delivering of the next sole to be operated upon to the table. In the illustrated machine the gages 36 are disengaged from the sole at this time by'the engagement of the cam block 56 with a depending lug 133 (Fig. 4) projecting from the hub of one of the arms of the gages. This permits the latch 48 to snap into locking engagement with the arm 49, so as to maintain the gages in open position after the cam block 56 passes by the lug 133.
When the sole has been positioned between the molds, the transferring movement of the slides 58 and 64 is arrested, and in order that the sole may continue to be held in proper position between the molds during the molding operation, there is provision for moving the transferring slide 58 upwardly with the lower mold while the gripping device 112-114 continues to grip the sole. To this end, the forward portion of the guideway for the transferring slide 58 is formed in a casting 134 (Figs. and 16) which is mounted to slide vertically in guideways 136 in. the frame of the machine. The positioning of the sole between the molds occurs during the upward. movement of the lower mold. and just before the lower mold is in position to engage the sole the casting 134 is connected to the lower mold so that the casting and the transferring slide carrying the sole are moved upwardly in unison with the lower mold. The casting 134 is connected to the lower mold at this time by the engagement of a pair of lugs 138 projecting from the lower mold carrier with shoulders 140 formed on the casting 134. In order to further insure that the sole Will be properly held in position during the molding operation, an auxiliary gripping device engages the sole during the upward movement of the lower mold to cooperate with the gripping device mounted on the transferring slide. This auxiliary gripping device comprises a gripping member 142 rigidly secured to the lower mold support or carrier for engaging the bottom side of the sole and a cooperating yielding gripping member 144 mounted in the portion of the frame that supports the upper mold, for engaging the top of the sole. The lower gripping member 142 is provided with a bifurcated head and a shank 146 that is adjustably secured in an aperture in the carrier of the lower mold by means of a screw 148. The upper gripping member is provided with a corresponding bifurcated head and a shank 150 that extends through an aperture 152 in a boss 153 on a portion of the frame of the machine that supports the upper mold. The gripping member 144 is yieldingly urged clownwardly by means of a spring 154 coiled about the shank 150 and interposed between a collar on the shank and a shoulder 156 near the upper end of the aperture 152. The downward movement of the gripping member 144 is limited by the engagement of a nut 158 threaded on the upper end of the shank 150 with the upper end of the boss 153. In order to vary the gripping action of the gripping member 144, the tension of the spring 156 may be adjusted by adjusting the nut 158 on the shank 150.
Then the lower mold is retracted at the completion of the molding operation, the lugs 138 allow the transferring slide 58 to drop by gravity to its initial position, this movement of the transferring slide being limited by the engagement of stop shoulders 160, Fi 16, on the casting 134 with shoulders on the frame of the machine. During this downward movement of the transferring slide the auxiliary gripper 142-144 and the gripping device 112-114 mounted on the transferring slide will continue to grip the sole until it has thereby vbeen stripped from the molds. As the transferring slide approaches the limit of this movement, the gripping device 112-114 is released from the sole. To this end, a stop arm 164 is mounted upon the jaw arm of the three arm lever 74 which stop arm during the downward movement of the transferring slide engages the end of a bracket 166 secured to the inner wall of the magazine, as shown in Fig. 11, which causes the three arm lever to be moved in a direction to open the aws.
In order that during the upward movement of the transferring slide the stop arm 164 may pass by the bracket 166, the stop arm is pivotally mounted upon the lever 74 lli) and is urged upwardly against a stop lug 165 (Fig. 12) by a. torsion spring 167.
When the tran ferring slide 58 reached th limit of its downward movement the return or rearward movement of the actuating slide 6 1 is initiated. Shortly after the start of this return movement, the slide (it picks up the transferring slide 58 to return the latter to its initial position at the rear 'ofthe machine. This is accomplished by means the upper end of the lug 132 on the slide 64, being brought into engagement with a shoulder on a l g "168 projecting rearwardly from the anthe slide 58 is n ating-f'slideiC l to itsinitial pesition.-
In .lordersole during the downward movement of the transferring slide at the completion of the molding operation, is not turned suiiiciently at this time to position the end of the abut ment member '70 in the path of the lug 68. After the lug 68 has passed by the end of the member 70,-the lever 74: is further turned a sufiicient distance so that the lug 68 will engage the member upon the next movement of theractua'ting slide 64: toward the molds. This additional; turning movement e 7% is accomplished by the stop riding over an upwardly inc-lined protuberance (Fig. 11) on the stop bracket 168' The lever 7% is then locked in position by the engagement therewith of the latch lever 80. During the return movement of the slides, the measuring bar 116 which has been released by the final turning movement of the lever T l stopped from movement with the slides when the stop lug-118 thereon reaches the shoulder 120 on the latch 122. by the engagement of the stop lug with a depending finger 17 1 on the end of the latch 122. By the time the slides have reached the limit of their retracting move-' ment another solc'has been delivered from the magazine on the table 34 and at the extreme limit of this movement of the slides, the side gages 36 are released by the cam block engaging the rear end of the latch lever -18 as previously described. and the cycle of operations of the machine is repeat-ed.
A In order that during the retracting movement of the feed slides the end of the member 70 of the three arm lever T l may pass by the abutment arm 106 on the rear end of the toe gage actuating rack 98 so that the member '70 may engage the arm during'the next advancing movement of the slides, the

In the illustrated machine the lower slide 6 1 is actuated toward and from the molds in timedrelation to the retraction of the molds, as above described, by connection with the driving'shaft' of the machine F igs' 1, 2 and 8). Tlhisconnection 00111311585 a pair-of gears 1-78 mounted on shafts beneath the actuating sh'de- 64 which gears are secured on the under side move the slide and then through a rack 182 driven in- 1mison'.-iFirst one gear 17 8 acts the rack- 182 is picked up by'the other gear 178 to move the .-lide the remainder of its movementtoward or from the molds. The
gears 178 are connected to rotate in unison by a sprocket chain 18 1, that passes over sprocket wheels secured to the shafts 180. The gears 178 are driven by means of a pinion 186 secured to the forward shaft 180 that is engaged by a segmental gear 188 formed on the upper end of a lever 190 pivoted at 192 on the frame of the machine.
The lever 190 is actuated by the engagement of a cam roll 19% on the lower end thereof with a canr groove 196 formed in one face of agear 198 that is mounted on a shaft 200 j ournaledin hearings in the frame of the machine The gear 108 driven through pinions 202 which connect the gear with the gear 12 carried by the crank shaft 10 Immediately after the gripping device 1421 l4t associated with the molds and t gripping device 112114 associated with the transferring slide have stripped the molded sole from the molds, an ejecting device acts to grip the sole and-convey it forwardly from between the 'molds allowing it to drop into a receptacle placed in front of the machine. This ejecting device comprises a sole gripping device (Figs; 17 to 19) mounted on a sliding carrier 208 which in turn is mounted to slide on a rearwardly and upwardly inclined guide bar 210 that is secured at its ends to a bracket 212 on the frame of the machine and arranged at the left side of the molds. The gripping device is provided with a. stationary lower jaw 21-1 secured to thecarrier 208 and a self adj ..ting
"aw 216 iivotallv mounted noon the inner IMF permit the sole to pass between them on its passage to a position between the molds and at the completion of the molding operation, as the sole is stripped from the molds, the jaws are permitted to close on the sole. The jaws are opened by means of a tail piece 224 on the lever 218 over which extends the free end of a substantially horizontal arm of a lever 226 pivoted on the bracket 212. The
'- lever 226 is urged in a direction to move the end of its arm upwardly away from the tail piece 224 to permit the torsion spring 222 to close the jaws on the sole, by means of a coiled spring 228 having one end connected to the arm, this movement of the lever 226 being limited by a stop pin 230 on the bracket 212. The lever 226 is swung in a direction to open the jaws at the proper time by the engagement of an inclined surface on the upper end of a post 232 adjustably secured to the carrier for the lower mold, with a roll 234.011 a depending arm of said lever 226. During the retraction of the lower mold the disengagement of the post 232 from the roll 234 permits the jaws to close upon the sole. The carrier 208 is then moved forwardly on the guide bar 210 to convey the sole forwardly from between the molds and near the limit of this movement the jaws 214-216 are opened to permit the sole to drop by gravity from the machine. The opening of the jaws is accomplished at this time by the engagement of the tail piece 224 on the jaw carrying lever 218 with an inclined surface 236 on a lug projecting from the bracket 212. The carrier 208 is then immediately returned to its initial position at the rear of the molds to permit the jaws 214216 to engage the next sole that is molded. The carrier 208 is actuated through connections with a sprocket chain 238 that passes over sprockets 240 located respectively at the front and rear of the molds. The sprocket 240 located at the front of the molds is mounted on a shaft 242, and the sprocket located at the rear of the molds is carried by a shaft 244. The connection between the carrier 208 and the sprocket chain 238 is such that both the sole ejecting and the retracting movements of the carrier are accomplished by one complete rotation of the chain. This connection comprises a block 246 secured to the carrier which is provided with a substantially vertical slot that is engaged by a stud 248 secured to one of the links of the chain 238 so that as the chain is carried around the sprocket wheels the stud 248 will freely work in the slot.
The mechanism for thus driving the sprocket chain 238 comprises a sprocket chain 250 (Figs. 10, 14 and 17) that passes over a sprocket wheel secured to the shaft 244 and a sprocket wheel 252 formed on the driven 'member 254 of a clutching device The member 254 is loosely mounted on a con stantly rotating shaft 256 driven by a sprocket and chain 258 which may be connected to the driving shaft of the machine. The clutch member 254 is urged toward the driving clutch member 260 secured to the shaft 256 by means of a spring 262 coiled about the shaft and interposed between the outer end of the clutch member 254 and a collar secured to the shaft. The clutch member 254 is held out of engagement with the member 260 by the engagement of the end of a horizontal bolt 264 with a cam lug 266 formed on the member 254. The bolt 264 is mounted to slide in ears 268 projecting from the frame of the machine and the bolt is urged toward the clutch member 254by means of a spring 270 coiled about the bolt between the rear ear 268' and a collar secured to the bolt. The clutching device is pro vided with means for retractingthe belt 264 from the cam lug'266 to allow the clutch members to become engaged by the action of the clutch spring 262, and at the comple tion of one rotation of the sprocket chain 250 to release the bolt 264 allowing it to re-engage the cam lug 266 thereby disconnecting the clutch members, the clutch being thrown in at the proper time during the downward mor-ei'uent of the lower mold. The means for retracting the bolt 264 comprises an arm having one end pivotally mounted on a pin 27-1- and its other end'engaging a pin 2T6 projecting laterally from the bolt. A second arm 278 is also pivotally mounted on the pivot pin 274. The arms 272 and 278 are urged in opposite directions about the pivot pin 27 4 by means of a coiled spring 280 interposed between the arms and such relative movement of the arms is limited by the engagen'ient of abutment lugs 281 on the hubs of the arms. At the proper time during the downward movement of the lower mold, an inwardly projecting lug 283 on the end of a depending finger 282 mounted on the under side of the lower mold carrier engages a lug 285 on the free endof the arm 2T8 whichacts through the lugs 281, arm 272 and pin 276 to retract the bolt from engagement with the cam lug 266 on the driven member against the action of its spring 270. li hen the bolt 264 has been thus retracted, the arm 278 has been swung a sufficient distance to the rear to disengage the lug 285 from the lug on the end of the finger 282. allowing the end of the finger to pass by the end of the arm. The lock bolt is then held in retracted position by an upwardly spring pressed plunger 284, the end of which snaps up into engagement with the end of the bolt 264 when the bolt is disengaged from the cam lug 266. At the completion of one revolution of the sprocket chain a lug 286 carried thereby engages a pin 288 projecting laterally from the plunger 284 to retract the plunger from engagement with the bolt 264 thereby allowing the bolt to be moved by its spring into engagement with the cam lug 266 to disengage the clutch members. During the upward movement of the lower mold, the yielding connection between the arms 272 and 278 permits the end of the finger 282 to pass by the end of the arm Uponthe next downward movement of the lower mold, the clutch will again be thrown in as above described to repeat the cycle of operations of the sole ejecting device.
