WILLIAM M. KELLY, OF WESTFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
PRINTING PRESS.
Original application filed August 6, 1921, Serial No. 490,290, and in Great Britain July 27, 1922. Divided and this application filed July 7, 1925.
The present invention relates to printing presses and more particularly to bed and cylinder presses of the two revolution type.
This application is a division of my application Serial No. 490,290, filed August 6, 1921, and relates to the operating and controlling means of the impression cylinder.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an eccentrically operated impression means disposed at a considerable distance from the bearings of the cylinder so that the slight oscillation of the connecting rod will not have any substantial tilting effeet on the bearings, and to dispose the means connecting the cylinder bearings and said eccentrics vertically and midway the length of said bearings so that no bending or tilting forces are transmitted to the cylinder. Because of this arrangement, it is possible to employ hollow cylinder housings bolted to the side frames of the base. if desired, as no tensional force or forces tending to separate the housings and frame are produced.
Another object is to provide an improved means for locking: the manual throw-off against operation except when the cylinder is raised.
A still further object is to provide means for adjusting the position of the cylinder relative to the form so that after the press has been in operation the cylinder may be adjusted toward the form or bed to compensate for wear and use of the press.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a detailed description of one embodiment of the invention:
Figure 1 is a partial sectional elevation of the press showing means for throwing on and oil the impression;
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through one of the side frames of the press and the associated cylinder housing; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the throw-oft mechanism.
In the drawings, the cylinder is shown at 138 carried by bearings 139 guided by the hollow cylinder housings 140 secured to the side frame 35.
The throwing on and ofl the on Serial No. 42,087.
pression includes a cam member 141 secured to shaft 44 of the bed and having a cam groove 142 receiving the cam roller 143 on the lever 144 pivoted on rod 145 carried by the frame. This lever at its free end has a pin 146 associated with a grab hook 147 which at its other end is pivotally connected to arm 148 on rock shaft 149. This rock shaft at its opposite ends has a pair of arms 150 and 151 connected by rods 152 to arms 153 on short shafts 154 each carried in bearings 155 by the side frames 35. Between the bearings 155 each of the shafts 154 has an eccentric 156 connected by an eccentric rod 157 to the cylinder bearing 139 directly above the same. It will be observed that the eccentric rods 15'? are disposed within the cylinder housings 140 and are secured to the bearings 139 midway of their lengths. Furthermore the eccentrics are disposed vertically below the bearings 139 and at a considerable distance so that the slight pendulum motion of the eccentric rods has substantially no swinging effect on the bearings 139.
Rotation of the cam 141 effects oscillation of the eccentrics 156, thereby raising and lowerino' the cylinder. The position of the arms 150 and 151 when the impression is on is indicated by the dotted line 158 in Figure 1 and when ofi' by the dotted line 159 in said figure.
Means are provided for adiu ting the cylinder with respect to the form or bed so as to compensate for wear. In the present instance this is accomplished by varyinq the length of the rods 152. turnbuckles 160 beinsr provided for this purpose.
In order to throw-off the impres ion ac' tuating means. the grab hook 147 is disengaged from the pin 146. This should be done when the impression is oil. and for the purpose of making the disengaging mov ment easy. there should be no force transmitted between the pin and the cab hook. For this purpose. the rock shaft 149 has an arm 161 (Figure 1) adapted to abut the stop 162 when the cylinder is in raised position. and this arm is held in engagement with the stop by the springs 163 actingpn the area 1e4- same to the shafts 154.- rtzeeo' ape-Ease .without any frictional opposition.
It is desired to throw oil? the impression when a sheet is not properly fed on the feed hoard or not fed at all, and sometimes it is desirable to manually throw oil the impression. For the purpose of manuall throwin off the impression; a pedal 166 provided on the side trame 35. laci g carried hv loraclret 167 secured thereto. 'ifljs'pedal is secured to the lowerend of vertical rod 168', the upper end of which is swiv lied to an arm 169. The spring; 170' is interposed between the swivel and the hracl'et it and tends tohold the arm 169 in its upper posinedal 166. t irav he turned slightly and locked under he lug 171 on the hraclret 167. The arm 169 is loosely mounted on a rock shaft 172 and has an er-ttension 173 on the opposite side oi the shatadapted to strike a lug "174 on, the arm 175 secured to the rock shaft 172. This latter arm is connected by a linlr 175 with the sheet controlled automatic means for thro ing oil the impression and the connection be tween the two arms is such that either the automatic means orthe manual means can be operated independently. The rocl; shaft 172 adjacent the'g'ah hoot; has a depending arm 1T6 carrying a pin 177 extending" under the {rah heel: so that when the reel: shalt is turned the gab hook will he elevator and carried out of engagement with the pin 146, thus rendering; the cylinder raisin g and lowering means inoperative.
It is desirable that the img'v'ression actuating means he not disengaged when the impression is on, that is, when the parts are subjected to the stresses produced by forcing the cylinder against the form. In order to accomplish this in the present invention, means provided lock the c hnder throw-oft against." operation I'ICOPlT when the cylinder 15 in elewted position and the 1mpression As shown this is accomp! l h r rovidin a latch member 178 'iivoted 3 eh 1 1 i at 119 and'havlne' a shoulder 180 a rented to engage a hook 181 on the arm 176, The latch 178 is actuated so that it is car of engagement with the hoolr at time when the impression may be thrown of? without had results. At other times, the shoulder 180 engages the hook 181 and. locks the rock shaft 172 against turning. For the purpose of controlling the latch 128, a link 1853 is pivoted as-at- 183 tothe latch and has a slot ried out 1 assess a base, pair of mounted at 013110 o ioder having Pill ot eccen oase, eccei t c rods extending through said housings logs and means to its in the from said eccentrics and connected to sai hear oscillate said coo i in a printi ceis, in combination, a iilow cylinder housings cylinder having lug r in to raise and inch vertical rods rlly aid hetriugs i) points ithin the .1 t o the aase ope a "3 e lOwGi ends cl: said rods to d rods.
