Description
J. F. DRAPER BUTT HOOK Filed April 26, 1926 2 Sheets-Sneet 1 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Themany disadvantages of the use and employment of cast butt hooks with loggin'g apparatus are well known to those skilled in. the art, the principal objection to such hoks being that they requently break caus ing theloss of the choker lines and loge,
and expenSive delays in logging operations. It is therefore the purposeand ann oi the present invention to provide a hauhng hne locked butt hook, wherefrom the chokr' cable cannot become nnhooked or uncoupled during hauling 111 or hanlback opcrat1ons,
, and Which may be readily fabiricated from Wrought or orged metal, whercby a lighter' and much stronger butt hook is obtained with mucli less liability of breakage when in use, thai1 has obtained lieretofore where cast butt hooks have been emploed; x
While the butt hook of theinvention inay bc either forgedor cast, the same isprefer= ablwroght or' forged in substant1ally U.- shaped formation afr01n a single piece of metal and comprises a lower or bottom wall andvertical walls or checks 16 bent or offset inwardly in angulzr planes adjacent their upper aperturedends to provide there' at angularly and laterallydisposedinwardly and upWardly Curved shoulders 17 term1nat ing in substantially semi-circular spaced parallel cars 18. The edges of the walls 16 upon one side of the butt hookare bent or turned inwardly betweenthe bottom wall15 and the cars 18 to form theron ribsor' Webs 19 having their opposing edges in alignmcnt withthe opposing faces ofsaid cars and ex tendingclownwardly therefrom in prolongationthereto, to thereby .substantiall close said side of the butt hok; Theedges of the Walls 16 upon the opposite side of the loutt look are siniilarly bent or turned inwardly toform thereon ribs or webs 20 extending' apwardly from the bottom wall 15 and terminating substantially midWaybetween Said bottom .wall and the cars 18, having theirnpper ends curved outwardlyto 1nerge with the inner fades of the walls 16 adjacent the inwardly and upwaidly cnrved shoulders l7.and in conjunction therewith, form and provide thereat an .openi1ig 21, of substan- .t1ally c1rcular formation, as shown 1nore clearly in Fig. 3. .The opposing edges of the ribs 20 form and constitute a longitudinal slot 22 of less width than the diameter 'of terminal link 31 01? a cf slightly less diameter than the width of the slots 22 and 23 having a ferrule 26 fixedly secured upon its terminalof a slight ly less diameter than the opening 21 and of a greater diameter than the width of thesaid slots, in order that the choker cable 25 niay be rapidly and readily coupled to the butt hook, or similarly uncoupled therefrom.
Interposed between the butt hook cars 18 and pivotally connected theret by a pin 27 is a laterally swinging locking member 28 having its innei or lower fiard end extending within the socket 24: to normally obstruct the opcning 21 and having the outer or uppcr end thereof provided with a swivel crosshead 29, to the ends of Which is pivotally' connected a shackle or clevis 30, for intcn connecting the said swivel crosshead t0 a hauling line butt chain or tag lino.
The choker cable'25 is coupled to the butt hook by swinging the locking: member 28 to the unlocked position indioated in Fig. 4, inclining the end portion of the choker cable 25 and inserting the ferrule 26 within the socket 24 through the opening 21, as .shown in said figure, and .passing the said cable .downwrdlywithin the slots 22 and '23, t0
seatthe lower annular face of said ferrule upon the inner face of the lowefwall 15 for sw1vell1ng movement of the choker cable thereon, as shown in Figs. 1 130 3, inclusive,
and in dot and dash lines in Fig.10, follow ing which a pull on the butt chain or tag lime -returns or swings the lockingmember 28 to a normally aligned or locked position within the butt hook to obstruct the opening 21:and preventunhooking or dislodgment of' the errule 26 from the socket 24, as 1nore r clearly indicated in Fig. 5. The operation of uncoupling the choker cable 25 'r0m the butt hoOk is the reverse of that hereinbeiore described, andwill be readily understood.
In Fig. 7 the bntt hook of the invention is pivotally connectedto a nonsWivelling locking 1nembef havingan eye 33 formed upon the upper end thereof to receive the lower looped end of a relatively short length otf. cable or chain 34 provided upon the Upper end with a terminal ieirnle 35 for swivelling movement thereat within a swivel crosshead 36 having a shackle 37' piv0tally mounted upon the ends thereof, Which receiVes the outer terminal of a tag line or butt chain 38.
In -Figs. 8 to 11, inclusive, a.butt hook- 0f slightly modified form having a nonswiveL ling locking memberris disclosed, said bntt bock being fabricated from a single piece of fiat 1naterial of suitable thickness bentin U-shapdformation to proVide a lowr'Wall 39 and vertical walls or checks 40, One Of; said Walls hav1ng an eye 41 out thereinwith a slot 42 extending clownwardly therefrom to the lower wall 39, Wherein said slot later ally extends and term1nates in a semi-circw 1ar end snbstantizilly in the center of the saine.
. A-Chker cab1e 43 of slightly less diameter than the width of the slot 42 is provided with a ferrule 44; fixedly scured upon its terminal of a diameter slightiy 1ess thanthe diameter otthe' eye 41 and of a greater die ameter thxn.thewidth of the said slot, so that the choker Cab]e 5L8 niay be rapidly and read1ly c0npled to, or s'imiizirly unc0npled from the butt hook, and. when oupled thereto is retained therin. v
.Intetposed between and pivotaliy connect{ ed, to'the semiirenlar apertnred uppen tandis of the waHs 40 by a pin 44,. is a swinging locking member having'its inner or 1oWer flared end extending within the butt hook t0 norn1aliy obstruct the eye 41 and having the outer or upper and thereof provided with an eye 46 to receive a terminallink 47 of a han1ing line butt chain or tag line.
The choker cable' is conpled to; the bntt hook oy swinging th locking member 45 to the aiterriat1ve nnlocked positions indi v cated in full lines and dotand dash fines in Fig. 11, 1nsert1ng the ferruie 44 within the bntt hook throngh the eye 41, as shown in dot anddash iines in Fig. 10, and passin'g* said table downwardly within the lot 42; to seat the lower annu1ar face of said ferrnle nnon the inner face of the lower wall 39 for swive1iing movement of the choker cab1e theroon, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, fo]lowing which a,pnll on the buttchain or tag lime retnrns or swingathe iocking member t0 a normally aligned or locked position within the bntthbok to obstrnct the eye 41 and prevent nnhooking Or dislodgment of the 'errn1e4: "ron1 the bntt-hook, as Will 'be manifest and apparent. The"ehokerble is nnconpled frozn the bntt hook by reverSing the operation above described.
In Fig. 12 the modified form of butt hook is provided with a piVotaliy connected 1ock ing member 48 having a swivel crosshead 49 monnted npon its onter or upper end,to the ends et wnieh are pivotally conneeted a shackie'50. for eonnection With a terminal 1ink 51 of a haniing 1ine bntt chain or tag iine.
In Fig. l3the modified fornx ofbntt hook is provided With apwotaily connected nonioeking, non-swiveliing niember 52-having an eye 53 to' Whi0h is connected a terminal lin]; 54 et a hanhng i1ne bntt cha1n ortag une.
Manifestly, thereore, the device of the invention i. extremeiysimpie, dnrable and econon1ical in construction, is oonvenient to use, is positive and efficientin operation, and in the empioyment thereof mnch time and energy is conserved.
