M. DAVIS BRANDING DEVICE Filled March 14. 1927 Patented Dec. 13, 1927i.
UNITED STATES P MoRRrs DAVIS, on *Los ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
BRANDING- DEVICE.
Application filed March 14, 1927. Serial No. 175,281.
This invention relates to a branding y.device and particularly pertains to a branding device of the velectrically heated type.
The primary Object ofthe invention is toy comprehends the provision of an effective means whereby the branding indicia may be changed from day to day in accordance with changing dates.
vWith the foregoing objects inview together with such other objects and advan-A .tages as may subsequently appear thek invention resides in the parts and in the combination and construction of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated by wayv of example in the accompanying drawings in which: y y Y Fig. 1 is a view of the branding device as seen in side elevation;
Fig. 2 is a view in section tion as seen on line 2-2 of Fig. `1 in the di-A rection indicated by the arrows;v e
VFig, 3 is-a detail inhorizontal section as seen on the line 3-,3 of Fig. 1 with portions removed to show'the heating element.;
Fig. 4 is a.' plan vien7 of the lower end of the branding device; l
Fig. 5 is a detail in line 5-5 of Fig.A 1f;
Fig. 6 is a detail in transverse section as seen on the line 6-6 ofl Fig. 1;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a fragmentary portion of one of the branding elements. Y
Referring to the drawing more specifically 8 and 9 indicate spaced side members of a yoke carried on a handle 10. Revolubly mounted on a shaft 11 carried by the yoke is a series of wheels or rollers 12, 13 and 14 having peripherial studs or teeth 15. Mounted on the outer end portions of the members 8 and 9 is a shaft 16 preferably formed of insulating material on which is revolubly mounted a series of thin metallic sleeves 17, 18 and 19 disposed in alignment with the wheels 12, 13 and 14 respectively. A series thereof f which n l disposed vso and end elevafv section as seen on thel of lthin `steel ribbon bands and around theirassociated sleeves 17, 18 and 19. These metal bands constitute brand. ing elements andv for this purpose are pro,- vided with suitablel indicia 23 which are formed by providing openings in the bands having the outline of the desired character so that when the metal bands are heated as will be hereinafter described, and applied ATENT; orifice.`
g 20, 21vand 22pass A around the rollers 12, 18 and 14 respectivelyy to effect a branding action, theY indicia or characters will be branded. band a more even heating thereof is effected embossed on the object than where the characters are raised on the..
branding element as ordinarily practiced,
The bands are formedrwith indents or openings 23 spaced apart longitudinally are engaged by the teeth' 15 ontherollersul2, 13 and 14 to e'ect a tive connection between the'. bands and-rollers.
between the members 8 and 9 which brakesY serve to hold the rollers against free rota-- tion and also act to position the rollers and hold them against turning with the bands l that' the `indicia on nadjacent bands-,will be` aligned across A thel underside portions of the sleeves 17, 18 andl9 as shown in Fig. 4. To this end the brakes 24 are of such length that when disposed between ad'- jacent teeth 15 theends .of the brakes willv abut against the contiguous faces of the ad; jacent teeth as particularly shown in Fig.- 2. In practice the band 20 is providedl with indicia designating years-such as27, 28, etc.; the band 21 is providedV with indicia corresponding to the number of days in the month,'and the band `22 is provided With indicia corresponding to the number of months in the year. It is obvious however that any suitable characters may be provided 0n the several bands as occasion mayjrequire.V
As a means for heating the branding ele- By thus forming the brandingposi- Bearing against each of the rollers is*` i a spring lpressed .brake 24 mounted on a spring arm 25 carried by a bar 26 extending ments an electrical conductive and resistance element 29 is arranged in a recess or chamber4 30 formed in the shaft 16; the terminals of which element vconnect with studs .31 and 32 leading through an insulating cap 33 and adapted to be connected into an electric cirous portions to be ybranded tends across the chamber 30 containing.` the -Y heating element 29 so thatit will absorb heat from the latter. The branding plate 34 may be demountable so that various indicia may be readily provided to recede the indicia carried by lthe branding ands;
In the"v operation of the invention `they if neces-,
bands 20, 2 1 and 22 are adjusted, sary, to bring the desired indicia in alignment at the lower end of the device, which is effected by manually rotating the Abands on the rollers 12, 13 and 14 and on the sleeves 17, 18 and 19. On directing an electric current through to the heatingIelemeiit-29 the lower portions of the bands will be heated through the .sleeves and the branding plate 34 will also be heated so that on applying the lower end of the device to the surface said surface will be burned by the heated metal surrounding the open inl dicia thereby forming a brand with enclosed characters lsurrounded by a burned field.
I claim: v
1'. In an electrically heated brander,V a branding band vformed with indiciaopenings, and means for electrically heating the band.y
2. Ina branding device, a metallic band. formed with indicia openings and an electric heating element around which said band is passed contiguous` thereto but spaced therev from.:
3. Ina branding device, a metallic band formed with indicia openings, an electric heating" elementaround which said band is passed contiguous thereto but spaced therefrom, and a mounting for said `band permitting adjustment of the latterto Ydispose varithereof 'adjacent said heating element. '4.In a-branding device, a metallic band formed with indicia openings, a roller and a turnable Sleeve supporting said band, and a heating element encompassed by the sleeve.
Vformed with openings 5. In a branding device, an electrical `heating element, a plurality of sleeves encircling said element, a band passing around each of ,said sleeves, formed .with branding indicia,
and wheels around which said bands pass operable to permit adjustment of the bands to dispose various indicia thereon contiguous said sleevesf 7 Y 6. In a branding device, an electrical heatingelenient, a plurality of sleeves encircling saidelement formed with branding indicia, wheels around which said bands pass operable to permit adjustmenty of the bands to dispose Vvarious indicia thereon contiguous saidV sleeves, and means engageable with said wheels for opposing rotation thereof.
7. In a branding device, an electric ,heating element, a fixed tc be'heated by said element, a plurality of metallic bands provided with brandingindicia, and revoluble supports for sai-dbands; said bands being arranged with portion thereof continuous to said heatin` element.
8. In a branding device, a metallic band mounting for saidband on which lthe band may be moved to present the various indicia constituting indicia, a
branding' plate arranged thereon to a branding position,"'and nica-ns 5 for heating a portion of the band'surrounding position'.
9. An electrically heated brander embody shaft formed' with a heating Vchamber opening'to one side thereof, an electrically resistance element in said' Ving an indicia opening disposed inthe brand#y chamber, andan indicia carrying band passingV overv said sleeve in lcontact therewith,
'whereby heat will be, conducted fromvthe sleeve to the band. l 1
10. In abr'anding device, a vseries of indicia bearing metallic band-s, a support on which said bands are carried, and an electrical heating element arranged to rtransmit heat to said bands. L
