`This invention relates to nut forming machines and more particularly, to the mounting or supports for the operating tools or punches thereof.
6 Y The object ofthe invention is to so mount the relatively movable telescoping inner and outer punch members as to enable them to automatically maintain proper alignment with each other' or, in other words, be selfadjusting or accommodating to each other, to thereby avoid the otherwise harmful effects of misalignment of the parts and strains upon the tools which might injure the same.

The invention maybe applied to any form of nut making machine or indeed any machine involving relatively movable telescoping inner and outer punchmembers, but for convenience ofillustration has been shown applied to a nut machine of the type illustrated inthe patent for nut machine, N o. 1,346,889, granted July 20, 1920, to E. Hollings. SaidV kmachine comprises a suit-able frame 1 supporting the usual die block 2 and operating shafts 3, 4:, driven in any suitable manner and inter-connected in timed relation by the ygearing represented conventionally at 5. As is usual, the nut blanks are cut oif in succession from a bar fed step by step to the machine, being rst partially separated by the indenters 6 actuated by suitable cams 7 on shaft 4, each succeeding nut blank being carried into the die block by a tubular cut oft tool 8 opposed to which is a tubular crowning tool 9. When the blank, illustrated at 10 is carried into the die block it is pierced by an inner piercing punch 11 opposed to which is the slug thinner and ejecting punch 12. The blank is also compressed between the cut off tool 8 and crowner 9 and by the crowner is carried out of the die block and after ejection of the slug `is delivered as a finished pressed nut blank.
5 The several operating tools and particularly the inner punches 11, 12 and outer or tubular punches 8, 9 are arranged in pairs opposed to each other on opposite sides of the blank, .each pair comprising telescopically related and aligned inner and outer punch members. The drawings show the punch members 9 and 11 as actuated by suitable cam devices on shaft 3, as in said prior patent, and similar suitable devices, not shown, are provided at the lother end of the machine for actuating the similarly arranged inner and outer punch members 12, s.
In such machines some diiiiculty has been experienced with breakage of and injury to the punches due to lack of proper alignment of the telescopically related tools, either due to inaccurate workmanship or adjustment or to wear or use of the machine bringing about a condition of lack of alignment.
The present invention overcomes such objections by a special mounting of the punch tools. As illustratedparticularly in Figs. 2 and 3 the outer or crowning punch 9 is of the usual tubular form with one portion thereof threaded, as at 13, to enter a split or two part clamping member 14, leia clamped between a cap 15 and the body portion of a'slide 16 which extends rearwardly to and is actuated by a suitable cam or cams on the shaft 3, as in said prior patent. Cap 15 is held to the slide 16 in any-suitable manner, as by the. bolts and nuts 17. This tubularv outer punch member or crowning tool is therefore readily held in its movable carrying slide but is adjustable longitudinally thereof to determine the inal blank thickness and for proper cooperation with the tools at the other end of the machine by loosening up the clamping parts and screwing the punch forwardly or rearwardly, as will be readily understood. The rear end of said punch may be closed by a sleeve guide 18 and the parts may also be provided with ports and passages 19 for circulating cooling liquid thereto if desirable.
The inner or piercing punch 11 is telescopically related to the crowning punch 9 and slides longitudinally within the same. It is guided in an opening at the working end of the crowning tool and in a similar opening in the sleeve 18 and has a rearward extension provided with a collar-like head 20 for adjustment to its operating slide 2l which reciprocates in the slide Y16 and is also actuated by suitable cams on shaft 3. The
' securing means 'for the punch 1i comprises a pair of upper and lower threaded clamping blocks 22, 22a provided with `vertically exv tending side ribs 23 entering similarly shaped guiding ways in the slide 2l and clamped between a portion oi the slide and a cap 24 held thereto by nuts 25 on the bolts 26. These clamping members hold between them a hollow sleeve 27 and a slot threaded block 28. The latter is at they rear end of the inner punch and forms an abutment to receive the throws ot the punch head 20, the outer diameter of which is slightly smaller than the inner diameter oiv the threads in thel clampingl blocks. The threaded sleeve 27 is held in said clamping locks surrounding the punch shank and in advance' of its head. This sleeve has an opening therein through. which the punch shank extends, said opening bei-ng slightly larger than the punch shank, say several thirty seconds of an inch.. It adjusted in the clamping blocks to a position in which a slight clearance, ofl say several thirty seconds oi an inch, and indicated at 30, is left between the head of the punch and said sleeve,
The punch as a whole may be adjusted longitudinally in the machine in the same manner as the crowning tool 9, to wit, by loosening up the clamping blocks and by a screwing operation adjusting the' block 28 and sleeve27 forwardly or rearwardly to the desired point, but in the final position -ofadju'stment the clearance 30 is left as bef 'fore described.
` As a consequence the punch 1l is secured to` its operating slide but has a floating connection therewith, being permitted a slight longitudinal motion with. respect to said slide determined by the clearance 30 and also a slight lateral or transverse motionwith respect to said slide, determined by the clearance between the outer 4surface of the punch shank and the inner surface of sleeve 27.
With this arrangement extreme. accuracy in workmanship is not essential as the punch can loey inserted in telescoping or sliding rela.- tion with. the crowning tool and the block. 28 and sleevel 27 adjusted and clamped as stated, and the rear end of the punch may be al lowed to go and come as it pleases, always adjusting or accommodating itself to either' inaccuracies ot workmanship or any possible mis-alignment due to wear and tear upon the parts ot" the machine orto adjustment thereo'll or to attempted change of position or lack ot align-ment dueA to. effect upon the tools by the volume or thickness thereof.
Without further description it is of course, obvious that thel punches 8 and 12 at thel other end ol2 the machine may be mounted and supported in the same manner as those described, so that the inner punch- 8 Will have a Heating connection toi its operating slide and automatically adjust or aecommodate itself to conditions of mis-alignment.
lVhat I claim is vA nut machine, comprising a frame provided with a dic block having a bla-nk receiving opening, a carrier guided on said frame and carrying a hollow punch arranged' to enter said opening, a second punch havin g a shank slidable with a bea-ring fit within said hollow punch and at its outer end beingI provided with a head, and a movable slide for operating said second punch,- said slide being provided with a cavity toreceive the head end of said second punch, lsaid: eavity being enlarged laterally and longitudinally beyond the diameter of saidshanl: and length oi said head to permit lateral and longitudinally lost motion between the slide and second punch, to thereby enable said serond punch to `main-tain its bearing fit inthe hollow punch regardless of alignment ot said slide with the die block opening.
