Application filed March 8, 1925. Serial No. 14,083t V This invention relates to rotary pumps the form of a disk, radially or transversely and more particularly to that type of pump slotted to provide teeth thereon and inciwherein the rotor or impeller is provided dently with pockets between the said teeth, With teeth or projections forming ockets said disk having a continuous groove turned 5 therebetween lateral to achannel in which therein and passing through the said teeth, the main stream of water is carried through the lateral Walls of which groove converge the pump by virtue ofothe shear resistance towards the bottom thereof, and a partition between such main stream of water and the member extending inwardly of the casing water in the said pockets, the invention havnto the said roove adjacent the outlet open- 1 ing for its object to provide an economical mg and con orming in cross sectional conand' efficient pump of this type wherein adfiguration with the cross sectional shape of vantage is taken of the fluid cohesiveness, the said groove whereby the said partition adhesiveness and shear resistance for the may be ad usted in its relationship to the securing of a steady flow of water through bottom and side walls of the said groove by 15 the pump and the obtaining of a very subincreasing or decreasing the extent to which stantial capacity in the pump relative to the said partition enters the said groove. the diameter of the rotor and in comparison All of WhlCh is more particularly deto centrifugal pumps ofequal diameter at scribed andascertamed hereinafter, by way a.g1ven number of revolutions per minute. of example, having reference to the accom- 20 A further object is to provide a pum of panymg drawings, wherein such type having an annular or circular Figure l is a fragmentary elevation with channel therein and'slotted transversely of the cover plate partly broken away of a the said channel wherein the head resulting pump embodying the said invention;

The rotor 1 is in the form of the construction or operation of the invena disk or drum, the face of which is protion as it may be carried into effect, will bevided with a circular groove-or channel 7 50 come apparent as the said invention is hereflanked by inner and outer rows of teeth 8 inafter further disclosed. and 9 on opposite sides of the said groove or In carrying the said invention into effect, channel, WhlChteeth are formed by the ra- I may provide within a suitable casing pro- 'dial slotting of the face of the rotor, the

said teeth, and. it will be noted that the lateral walls of the said channel converge towards the base thereof so that the channel is substantially narrower atthe said base than at the top;
The purpose of the said channel, teeth and intermediate pockets is to produce a flow of fluid through the pump from the inlet to the outlet passage thereof upon the rotation of the said rotor, this flow being induced by the shear resistance between the fluid in the pockets between the teeth of the rotor and the main body of fluid in the channell7 which is also a result of the cohesive nature of thevfluid, the action still further being assisted by the adhesive nature of the hat motion is transmitted thereto by the sidewalls and base of the'channel 7.
This utilization of the shear resistance and cohesivenessof a fluid is very effective in impelling fluid through a pump such as that illustrated, and in order to effect the direction of water into the channel from the inlet passage 5 and from the channel through the outlet passage 6, a partition member 12 is provided (in this case integral with the cover plate 4) which extends into the channel 7 and; interrupts its continuity so that it prevents fluid being drawn from the passage 6 by the action of the rotor and ensures the interruption ofthe flow of fluid around the pump casing whereby it is forced out therefrom through the said passage 6. For this purpose the partition member must more or less fit and conform to the shape of the passage 7, wherefor member 12 is provided with beveled faces 13 and 14 and an end face 15 conforming to the converging walls of the channel. 7 and the flat base respectively of the said channel.
To permit adjustment of the partition 'member so that it may be correctly positioned in the channel 7 to avoid unnecessary.
frictional contact with the teeth 10 or 11-or the bottom of the channel, and also to permit of its readjustment to suit different conditions of operation or to compensate for wear ofthe walls of the groove or of the partition member, this member is capable of variation as to the extent to which it may enter the said channel. In this example such adjustment may be effected by regulating the position of the rotor such as by the insertion of a plate or shim 18 between the rotor and the casing 2 of the pump.
It will, be understood however, that the the casing or the cover plate, or of any or all of these, may be machined to permit the entrance of the partition member into the channel to the desired extent to compensate for any wear which may have taken place disturbing the relationship between the said partition member and the channel. In Figures 4, '5 a d 6 a somewhat different of being reversed in its direction as indicated by the arrow in Figure 2 of the drawlngs, and the outlet passage 19 forms practically a continuation of the said channel 7 so that fluid is delivered therefrom without great variation of direction, it being understood that the inlet and outlet passages may be arranged in any convenient form or position relative to the partition member which may be thought necessary or desirable.
Figures 7, 8 and 9 illustrate a form of pump wherein the rotor 20 is in the form of a disk or drum, the peripheral portion of which is provided with an annular groove or channel 21 flanked by flanges which are transversely slotted to provide teeth 22 and 23 on opposite sides of the said groove or channel, the slots forming pockets 24: and 25 between the said teeth and the lateral walls of the said channel base thereof as and explained.
Inthis example the casing 26 is provided with inlet and outlet passages 27" and 28 between which is located a boss or enlargement 29 on the said casing, the said boss being bored to accommodate tition member 31 projecting into the said channel 21 and operating to direct the flow of fluid into and from the channel 21 as for the purposes already described with reference to the partition member illustrated in Figures 1 to 6. The said partition member 31 is also provided with beveled lateral faces 32 and 33 and an arcuate' end face 3 1 conforming respectively to the converging walls of the channel 21 and the curved form of the base of the said channel; and the member is slidable in the. bore of the boss 29 which is provided with set screws 35 by means of which the said partition member may be secured in any position of adjust ment to suit conditions of operation or to compensate for'wear.
36 is a cap threaded onto the outer end of the boss 29 and enclosing a leak-proof washer 37 to prevent escape from the casingv of any fluid which may pass upwardly around the stem of the partition member.
As will be apparent from an examination of Figures 1 and 2,, the inner end of the partition member may be expanded to provide inclined guiding walls 38 and 39 extending to assist the direction of fluid into and out of the channel of the rotor.
A very marked efficiency has been obtained with pumps of this type as compared with the ordinary centrifugal pump, and in actual practice using a pump constructed in accordance with Figures 7 8 and 9 of the converging towards the:
the stem 30 of a parstem of the said partition operating relation, and the device furthermore admits of great simplicity of manufacture, assembling and replacement of parts, at thesame time being very unlikely to get out of order, except under the most adverse operating conditions.
