SMOKING PIPE.

Application led February This invention relates to smoking pipes and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind constructed in a manner whereby moisture or saliva is prevented from entering the bowl proper and thus. avoiding the formation of the objectionable wet neel and assuring consuming of all tobacco placed within the bowl.

Another object of the invention is to provide a pipe constructed in a manner wherein the smoke passing from the bowl to the mouth is caused to travel along a relatively1 long path.

An additional object of the invention is to provide a pipe with two nested bowls engaged within the bowl proper of the pipe, the smoke dra-ft passing upwardly between the nested bowls and downwardly between the outer nested bowl and the wall of the bowl proper to the stem.

Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a pipe constructed in a man ner permitting the same to be readily taken apart and cleansed and wherein provision is made within the bowl for moisture expansion and contraction.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved smoking pipe whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and `advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing7 wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a ipe constructed in accordance with an emgodiment of my invention;

A bowl cap or rim 3 is the upper edge of the bowl 1 proper and this rim or cap has a central opening defined by a flange .4 adapted to extend Within the upper portion of the bowl 1. l An inner bowl 5 of any desired metal has its outer or open end snugly engaged within the rim or cap 3 and the flange 4 carried thereby. This bowl 5 also nests within an outer bowl 6 havingits open end portion snugly received within the flange 4. The

outer bowl 6 has its side wall provided with a spiral corrugation resultin inl an inner spiral groove 7 leading from t tween .the bottoms of the bowls 5'and 6 to a port 9 in the upper portion of the outer bowl 6.` This corrugation also provides an outer spiral groove 10 leading from such port 9 to a space 11 between the bottom of the bowl 6 and the bottom of the bowl 1 proper. boi-e 12 of the stem 2 communicates with this space 11. The bottom of the inner bowl 5 is provided with a restricted port or opening 14 providing communication with the space 11. f

During a smoking operation the suction draft causes thesmoke to pass through the opening or port 14 into the space 8, upwardly of the spiral groove 7 through the port or opening 9 and down through the outer spiral groove 10 to the space 11 and out through of briery or any other desired adapted to engage e space 8 be-l the bore 12 of the stem 2. This results in the travel of the smoke lpassing alon a relatively long path and such path e ectively prevents saliva or moisture entering within the inner bowl 5 and thus eliminating the objectional wet heel.

The bowls 5 and 6 together with the rim or cap 3 may be readily removed from the bowl 1 proper and the bowls 5 and 6 may be conveniently disengaged from the rim or cap 3, thus permittingefective cleansing of the same and also permitting them to be sterilized if preferred. It is, therefore, to be understood that a sanitary pipe is provided and which sanitary condition may be maintained at little cost or inconvenience.

By use of the inner bowls together with the bowl rim or cap, the pipe proper may be made not only ofbrier but any other kind smoker a pipe of long service at a minimum of cost.

As is clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, the base portion of the corrugation of the outer bowl 6 contacts'with the side walls of 'the inner bowl 5 and of the bowl 1 proper, l thus assuring the formation ofthedesired grooves or channels.

Each of these protuberances or knobs 15 may be received within suitably positioned grooves 17 vprovided in the outer face of the flange 4l of the cap or rim 3, such groove being herein disclosed of a bayonet type.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a smoking pipe constructed in accordance withiny invention is particularly well adapted for useby reason of the convenience and facility with which it `may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of Asome change and modification without departing and spirit thereof -andfor this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangementand of the several 'parts herein shown in carryf rugation,

I claim f v t 1. In ycombination with the main bowl of a tobacco pipe having a draft opening in communication with the lower portion thereof, `a pair of nested supplemental bowls, the inner bowl having its bottom spaced from the bottom of the outer nested bowl, said nested bowls being insertable within the main bowl, an annular cap for the main bowl having an inwardly disposed flange, the nested bowls overlying the opposite faces of said flange, the outer nested bowl having its side wall provided with a spiral corrugation leading 'to the space between the bottoms of the nested bowls, the side wall of the outer nested bowl having an opening at the outer end of the spiral corrugation, said corrugation providing grooves at the opposite faces of the side wall of the outer nested bowl, the bottom of the outer nested bowl being spaced from the bottom of the main bowl when the nested bowls are applied within the main bowl, the inner nested bowl in its bottom being provided with a port,the outer nested bowl and flange of the cap having coasting means for locking said outer nested bowl to the cap.

3. In combination with the main bowl of a tobacco pipe having a draftopeningin communication with the lower-portion thereof, a pair of nested supplemental bowls, the inner bowl having its bottom spaced from the bottom of the outer nested bowl, said nested bowls being insertable within the main bowl, an annular cap for 'the main bowl having an inwardly disposed flange, the nested bowls overlying the opposite faces of said flange, the outer nested bowl having its side wall provided with a spiral corrugation leading to the space between the bottoms of the nested bowls, the side wall of the outer nested bowl having an opening at 4the outer end of t-he spiral corrugation, said corrugation providing grooves at the opposite faces of the side wall ofthe outer nested bowl, the bottom of the outer nested bowl being spaced from'the bottom of the main bowl when the nested bowls are applied within the main bowl, the' inner nested bowl in its bottom being provided with a port, the uplier portion of the outer bowl being provided with spring lugs for contact with the adjacent portions of the wall of the main bowl.
