UNITED 'sTpiTEs' v, 1,652,267 PATENT OFFICE;
JOHN W. BEIGEB,
F LUDINGTON, MICHIGAN ASSIGNOR TO THE CARBOH- COIPA'NY, OI
LUDINGTON, MICHIGAN.
FOLDING TABLE.
Application filed June 20, 1925. Serial 1W0. 38,535.
This invention relates to improvements in folding tables.
The main' objects, of this invention are:
First, to provide an im roved folding table which may be made of comparatively light material and is. at the same time, very strong and Xlgld, the parts being connecte severe strains.
and economies definitely appear from the detailed description to fol-.
low.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention ,is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part ofthis application, in which: i
Fig. I is a erspective view of a table embodying the eatures of my invention.
Fig. II is a fragmentary plan view wit a portion of the table top proper broken away to expose the 1parts below. Fig. III is a deta' section on responding to line 3-3 of Figs.
Fig. IV is a sponding to line H of Fig. II.
Fig. V is a fragmentary section correa' line cor- II and IV.
sponding to that of Fig. III showing one of the steps in assembling.
Fig. VI is a fragmentary perspective view of a leg with the hinge memb thereon ready for assembling in Fig. VII is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the legs with the inner hinge member mounted thereon.
In the drawing similar reference charac- 4 ters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of-the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referrin to the drawing, the top of the structure ilustrated consists of a rectangular bed or frame formed of side members or side rails 1 rabbeted at 2'on their upper edges to receive the top panel 3 which is,
in practice, of veneer, binder board or other thin light material.
ers mounte d the ends of'the side hinges for the legs may.
clamping detail sectlon on a line corred the leg member, thereby the frame. Y
notch- like keepers 18 and 19 on The side members preferably have mitered corner joints 4 The side members 1 have recesses 5 at their ends, the recesses being on the upper edges thereof and they also have kerfs or grooves 6 in their top and bottom edges, these grooves also being at members.
The legs 7 have U-shaped hinge members 8 arranged to embrace the upper ends thereof and secured thereon by the clamping flanges 9,- these clamping flanges being formed on the ends of the arms of the hinge members 8 and being clamped upon the front of the legs. .These hinge members have forwardly projecting pivot'ears 10.
The coacting hinge member 11 is also U- size to receive the hinge member 8, as shown in Fig. II, the ears 10 bein pivoted to the arms of the outer hinge mem er at 12.
The outer hinge member has pairs of arms 13 on the bight and outer arm thereof so that the member 11 may be arranged in the angle'of theside members and its clamping arms clamped upon the p and bottom edges thereof, thus not only attaching the member 11 but forming a h frame or corner iron securely connecting the meeting side. rails. The arms 13 are provided with flanges 14 which engage in the longitudinal groove 6.
The recesses 5 are of such depth that the upper sides of the top clamping arms are substantially flush with the upper edges of the side rails so that the top 3 lies thereon.
.A spring catch 15 is mounted on the inner pivot 10 and is disposed through the slot 16 in the forwardly projecting part 1 on supporting the catch laterally while permitting its being sprung into and out of engagement with the the project 20 of the member 11, thus reboth its erected and coling inner arm 'taining the leg in lapsed positions.
The edge 21 of the arm 20 is curved as a guide for the catch, that is, the catch rides on this edge as the leg is moved from erected. to collapsed position and vice versa.
In assembling, the parts are mounted upon the leg, as shown in Fig. VI, the meeting frame pieces being inserted between the clamping arms, and the clamping arms simultaneously set 'or clamped as by means of a power press. The hinge member thus 0 serves as an effective Connecting means for the frame members and the parts may be assembled with great rapidity, and when assembled are very rigid and'secure.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in one of the commercial embodiments thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus I claim as new ters Patent, is:
1. The combination of frame side members having meeting ends, a leg, 21. combined described my invention, what and desire to secure by Let- U-shaped frame and hinge member open at,
the front between its arms disposed in the angle of the side members, the bight and outer arm of said frame member having op-.
posed clamping arms clamped upon the top and bottom edges of the meeting side members, and a leg member secured to said leg and disposed between the arms of said frame member and pivotally connected thereto.
2. The combination of a frame side member having a top recess and top and bottom longitudinal grooves, a leg, a hinge member disposed on the inner side of said side member and having opposed flanged clamping arms clamped upon the-top and bottom edges of the side member with their flanges engaging the said grooves thereof, a leg member secured to said leg and pivot-ally connected to said hinge member, and a top mounted on the upper edge of said side member over the upper clamping arm.
3. The combination of frame side members having meeting ends. a leg, a combined U-shaped frame and hinge member open at the front between its arms disposed in the an gle of the side members and secured thereto, the inner arm of said frame member being extended and notched on its inner side and end providing keepers, aleg member secured to the leg and disposed between the arms of said frame member and pivotally'connected thereto, and a spring catch mounted on the front of said leg to swing therewith and to coact with said keepers for retaining the leg in its erected and collapsed positions.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN W'. BEIGER.
