c. H. HAMILTON GARBAGE TRUCK Filed-Oct. 16. 1925 Patented Dec. 6, 1927..
GARBAGE TRUCK;
7 Application filed October 15, 1926. Serial No. 141,899.
l6.- This inventionfrelates to'improvements in garbage trucks orxcarts I and more particularlyto means for closing the top of the truck. -.I One of. ,the objects of my invention i t o 5 provide. a simple, efficient and inexpensive device'of this character that .will make the usualj garbage truck more sanitary than it now is, and at the same time permit the -top as possible. QAnother object of my invention is to pro-, videin agarbage truck means for operating the means forclosing the top of.the garbage truck consistingof flexible members.
' In the use 0f my invention two covers are provided forclosing the effective length of the top of the truck, and the means for raise ing or moving them to open position assures that the two covers willi'move together at all times.
- Today the conventional garbage truck has no cover or closure with the result that as the garbage matter accumulates therein a preferably concavo-convexin cross-section for the purpose of assuring that the covers will be unseated vertically in a plane with the longitudinal axis of the truck body,
thereby allowing the attendants at either side ofv the truckto have the freest range of movement to dump garbage onto the truck without the covers being in'the way.
Another object of my invention is to assure that when the covers are raised for uncovering the truck body that the covers will be held in raised position at an inclination, and as these covers are concavo-convex the garbage that may enter any of the covers will be deflected downwardly into the truck body itself and will not cling onto the covers themselves. I
With the above and other objects in view my invention consists in the combination, arrangement and details of construction dis- I and then more particularly pointed out in e the appended claims.
In the drawings, which are merely illustrative ofmy invention and wherein similar ofthe truck to be uncovered as expeditiously closed in the drawings and specifications,
reference numerals designate similar'parts thruout the respectiveviews, 1.? 1,; Figure 1 is "a side-elevation of myinven-i. tion, fl
- Figure 2'is a view similar to Figure lz=but showing the covers in raised'position. a Y
Figure 3 is a view'of my inventionrloo'k ing from the front, the device beingpraisedr Figure 4c is a fragmental detailT'persPecs. tive view ofmy invention showing-the Vile: rious parts thereof. 1-111- In the drawings, 10 designates the garbage truck or cart which may beef anyidesirable shape and construction having the forwardly projecting and inclined'wall 11, asyis usual with this type of garbage trucks. I. pro-Z vide two or more covers to close the vehicle 17:3 body, the opposing walls of thelatter being designated 10", and .10 I f a if Two covers are designated 12 and 13, and are preferably formed concavo-convex in cross-section so that when the covers are properly applied in position the covers will assume the form of a hood extending the entire full length of the top of the truck as appears from Figure 1 showing the covers in closed position. Cover 12 is suitably hinged at a central point upon and against an arched strap or frame 25 the opposing ends ofwhich'are secured upon the top edges of the'vehicle or garbage truck body 10, and this cover is formed upon opposite longitudinal edges with base flanges .20" abutting the top edges of the vehicle body when'the cover is in closed position. Similarly cover 13 is formed with opposing marginal base flanges 21 and is hinged upon a movablearched-shaped bail 22 having its terminals trunnioned in brackets 23 secured eXteriorly. of the body 10. 'A flexible member Such as a cord 1418 connected at one end to the staple 15 secured upon the outer front side of cover 12, while at its opposite end the same cord is connected to a staple or like element 17 secured upon the inner side and front end of cover 13. Thus the two covers are connected together for unison movement by means of'the rope 14. Secured to the stop 17 on the outside sur face and at the front of cover 13 is a flexible element or rope 18 of a sufficient length to extend longitudinally down the said'cover fonARLns -i. AMILTON, or LOS anenrnsronmronnin, I i
to the point of location of a suitable and desirable catch 24 secured to the back wall of the truck body 10. Thus the operator can control both covers in their joint swinging movement simply by taking hold of the rope 18 and pulling upon the same which act raises'the covers together, cover 13 raising, and thru the instrumentality of pull rope 14, cover 12 also raising and lifting, and when bothcovers have been raised to the desirable point then the rope 18' is taken and wound around the catch 24, thus securing the covers in fixed raised position shown in Figure 4. In this position of the parts it will be seen that the entire inside of the truck body is exposed to the deposit of garbage which is thrown into the body as'same is emptied from pails or buckets or cans,
should any garbage be thrown against the covers the inclination of the same will allow the garbage to fall down into the body directly. To assist in holding the covers in closed position so as not to jar or rattle when thevehicle is in use, springs 80 may be employed to advantage, that will be tensioned in the act of raising the covers to open po sition. Each cover is reinforced by means of longitudinal battens 27, 28 and transverse battens 28, 28*, the latter being preferably concavo-convex as they engage the concavoconvex portions of these covers;
I do not mean to limit myself to the exact variations within the claims.
What I desire to claim and ters Patent is 1. A garbage truck having two covers pivotally connected thereto, one in advance of the other, separate frames upon which said covers move pivotally, a flexible connection connecting both covers, and a flexible connection attached to one cover for actuating the opening and closing the same.
2. A device as described consisting of a; vehicle body, two arched-shaped frames secured in spaced apart relation upon the top edges of said body so as to bridge'the space of the body, a pair of covers; each hinged upon one of said frames so as to move to open or closed position, means whereby both covers move as one cover is moved, and flexible means for actuating one cover.
3. As a new article of manufacture a pair of frames attachable to a vehicle body to extend across the same, a. pair of concavo convex covers hinged upon said frames for swinging movement to close said body, and means for moving both covers at the same time. a
In witness whereof he has hereunto set his hand this twenty first day of August, 1926.
' CHARLESH. HAMILTON.
