This invention relates to certain improvements in lingerie clasps and the special object of the invention is to provide a combination means for holding the lingerie strap in position and facilitating the fastening of the clasp to the seam of the dress in such a manner that when it is forcibly released the garment to which theclasp is applied will not be torn.

There are many occasions, such as while dancing, exercising or when bending over that a great strain is placed on the holding power of lingerie clasps and unless provision is made for easy releascment of the clasp from'the dress. great loss is often incurred by having to discard expensive gowns torn or ruptured by pins and the like, which will not yield to strain, aside from the embarrassment to the individual of having the strap fall down over the shoulder.

Particularly is this noticeable in clasps of the pin type. In addition to tearing the garment, the wearer often times suffers from being pricked or scratched When the pin becomes unfastened- By the use of my improved device, these disadvantages arising to discomfort the individual are removed and the wearer is relieved of any apprehension of embarrassment as wellas being assured of possesing a novel ,device, easy to apply and quick to adjust should it become unfastened.

The resiliency of the material from which the clasp is made permits of this easy opening,closing and removing the lingerie strap, together with the simple applicationof inserting it over the dress seam.

The invention possesses other advantages and features, some of which, with the fore going will he set forth at length in the following description, wherein I shall outline in full the form of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawing accompanying and forming a part of the present specification.

This particular form has proved to be satisfactory for the use and purpose to which the invention has been ascribed;

Figure 6 showsa perspective view of one of the gripping elements separated from the clasp, and Figure 7 is a perspective View of a portion of the clasp with one or the gripping elements applied thereto.

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference which denote like parts throughout:

1 is the top portion and 2 is the bottom portion of a continuous piece of metal forming a loop which is adapted'to enclose one strap of a lingerie garment. r The lower portion 2 terminates in-a rounded end 3, which is adapted to unite with the upper portion 1, having an open loop 4;

formed by bending back the end of the upperportion 1 and to lay within the boundary of the curve formed by bendingthe lower portion 2 as at 3.

Thus we have an engaging means for holding the free ends of the clasp together. The material used in the clasp is of such resiliency that by pressing on the upper por- 1 tion 1, engagement to the lower portion 2 1s easily had. Likewise, in releasing the clasp from the strap, by pressing down on the lip portion 3 and slightly bending the lower portion 2 the ends 3 and 4 are easily tripped and quickly separated.

In the center of the upperportion 1 and on each side thereof, themetal is coped at 9 and 10 so. as to form outwardly projecting lugs 5 and 6 containing holes 7* ends, whereupon to mount a pair of gripping elements ltiand 18 with the pin 12.

The gripping elements 16 and 18 are for applying the lingerie'clasp toth shoulder seam of the dress whereby to hold the lingerie strap in position. r

Toinsure a biting effect, the gri I ping elements l6 and 8 are provided wit 1 teeth 17 which mesh with one'another. These teeth "can be made so as 9 ha e a smallsp'ace ill] therebetwecn as shown in Figure 1, or they can be made preferably close fitting so that when they are applied the spring 13 will be increased in tension.

The cars 11 on each of the gripping elements are slightly longer thanthe depth of: the cope in the upper portion so as to hold the teeth 17 properly in mesh.

These ears 11 are rotatively mounted on the pin 12 and fit just inside the lugs 5 and 6, the holes 8 and 7 in which form a seat into which the pin 12 is journaled.

The spring 13 is a rat trap. spring having one end 14 bearing on the underside of each of the gripping elements, the other end 15 hearing against the face of the coped portions as at 9 and 10, so that when the gripping elements are rotated about the pin 12, the tension in the spring will cause the teeth 17 to adhere to the dress seam to which they are applied. I

From the foregoing, it is quite apparent that I have devised a simple, inexpensive and useful jewelry article and although the embodiment shown is thought to be preferable, changes may be made therein that lie within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus describeduny invention, I claim:

1. A device of the class described comprising a clasp portion, means for engaging the same, a pair of gripping elements pivot-ally mounted to said clasp portion and adapted to be applied to the seam of an outer garment and means for yieldably holding the gripping elements thereto.

2. A lingerie clasp comprising in combination'a loop portion having engaging means, a pair of gripping elements fastened to said loop portion to provide a gripping means for adherence to a dress seam.

3. A combination lingerie and dress clasp, having a continuous loop portion adapted to enclose the strap of a lingerie garment. a pair of gripping elements mounted upon the upper half of said loop portion to engageably hold the dress seam of an outer ment. i

4. A lingerieclasp consisting of a continuous piece of resilient material adapted to enclose a shoulder strap of a lingerie garment and means integral with said rlasp for facilitating its attachment to a dress garment, comprising oppositely acting jaws which are yieldably applied.

A lingerie clasp comprising a. continuous loop member having opposite bars swiugably connected at one end and provided with an intermeshing catch at the other end and adapted to enclose a lingerie strap thereloetween; a pair of rotative gripping elements mounted to the upper of said bars and means for continuously causing said gripping elements to incline inwardly towards said upgar- . per barv 6. 7. A lingerie clasp comprising a band of metal bent with its ends in superposed rela-' tion to form a closed loop, a pair oi jaws rotativelymounted to the top portion of said band, teeth in said jaws and a normally tensioned retractile spring co-acting with said jaws to restrain their opening.

8. A combination lingerie and dress clasp comprising a single band of metal bent with its 'endsin superposed relation, lugs projecting outwardly from said band, holes in said lugs, pins journaled in said holes, a pair o1 gripping jaws mounted to swing about said pins as axes, teeth in said jaws, a normally tensioned rat trap spring mounted upon said pins and co-acting with said aws to restrain their rotation.

9. A combination lingerie and dress clasp con'iprising a single band of metal bent with its ends in superposed relation; lugs projecting outwardly therefrom, holes in said lugs, pins journaled in said holes, a pair of gripping jaws mounted to swing about said pins as axes, teeth in said jaws, lugs on said jaws to limit their rotation in one direction and a normally tensioned retractile spring mounted on said pins and co-acting with said jaws to restrain their rotation in the other direction.

10. A lingerie clasp comprising a continuous loop element, having opposite bars swingably connected at one end, one of said bars being I bent downwardly and rounded outwardly from the loop so as to form a contour along which to guide the strap of a lingerie garment whenit isremoved from the clasp and means integral with said loop elementfor attaching it to a dress garment and yielda-ble means for releasing said attaching means when unduly strained.

11. A lingerie clasp comprising in combination a loop element and a gripping ele-v ment, the loop element being adapted'to enclose one strap of alingerie garment, a fastening means for the loop element comprising bent. portions of the ends of the loop which are adapted to entold one within the other. one of: said ends being roumled oute ward ly from the loop so as to provide free-- dom for said strap when it removed from the loop: a. pair of gripping elements super imposed on said loop element and adapted to be applied to the seam of an outer garn'ient whereby to hold said lingerie strap in position, and means for sustaining attachment of the gripping elements to the said outer garment. I

12. A combination lingerie and dress clasp comprising a single band of metal bent substantially parallel with one another so as to form a loop element for enclosing the strap of a lingerie garment, the ends of the loop having an engaging means whereby, by following the contour of one, the strap is restrained within the loop, and by following the other, the strap is guided from the loop, means for attaching said loop element to the shoulder seam of an outer garment comprising lugs projecting outwardly from said loop' element, holes in said lugs, pins journaled in said holes, a pair of gripping jaws mounted and CO-aCiJiIlg with said aws to restrain their Y rotation in the other direction.
