Application fi1e'd"Ju1y:31; 1925i- Serial No. 47 ,291:
7 This invention relates to refrigerator latches of the general type disclosed in my prior U. S. Patent No. 1,519,267, dated Dece-mber' 16, 1924, which comprise a" pivotally mounted retaining element generally re= te rr'ed to as-a imam handlefor disengaging said latch'fro m the keeper and as'pri ng-aetuat'ed trigger that moves automatically into engagement with the latch, and thus retains it i'n' an inoperativeiposition when the latch is disengaged from the keeper by manipulating thehandle of the lock.
Theobj'e'ct of the invent-ion is to provide a refrigeratorilatch of the particularf kind described in my? sai d- U. S. patent which is so constructed that the handle ca'nbe easily discon'nected fromthelink that joins the handle to the latch without disconnecting the handle .or the latch from the casing.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a rear elevational view of a refrigerator latch embodying my present invention; and
Figure 2 is a side elevationalview of said latch, with a portion of thecasing broken away so as to more clearly illustrate how the padlock and the member through which connected adjacent its lower end by means the hasp of the padlock extends co-operate with thecasing to prevent movement of the retaining element or latch.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, A designates the casing of the latch which consists of a hollow casting of substantially oblong shape in general outline provided; at one side with a laterally-projecting extension A, B designates the retaining element or latch which is arranged transversely of the easing with one of its ends projecting laterally through theside wall of the casing and" its opposite end pivotally mounted inthe ex tensionA. onthe casing, C designates the keeper that co-operates with the latch B to hold thedoor in its closed position, I) designates the handle which is pivotally connected by a pivot pin 1 to forwardly-projecting lugs 2on the front wall of the casing and which is provided with an ztngularly-disposed arm 3, shown in brokenlines in Fig ure2, that projects into the casing, Edesignates a link thatis attached at its upper end to the arm 3 of the handle and pivotally of a pivot pin 4 to thelatch B, as shown in Figure 1, F designates the spring actuated trigger that moves automatically into en'- gagem'entm'uth the latchB, and thus'retains it in its elevated or inoperative position when said latch is moved-upwardly out of engagement with the keeper C by moving the u per and of the'handle D forwardly, 5 designates a laterallyprojectifig' trippingdevice on the trigger that is adapted to eh gage astationary abutment adjacent the keeper when the door moves-into its closedposition; thereby releasingthe "latch" and pe'r mitti'ng it tomove downwardlyinto:engage: ment with the keeper and G designates-the spring'that is combinedwith-the latch 13' and-'- with the trigger F in such a way that itinorg 'mally" liolds the latch in its' depressed posi of a padlock J can be inserted through a hole 7 in a portion of said member that is ar ranged outside of the casing when the latch V is in engagement with the keeper. The
member I consists of a flat bar connected at 7 its upper end to the link E and arranged with its lower end portion projecting downwardly through a slot in the bottom end wall of the casing A. When the padlock J is not combined with said member I, the latch can be disengaged from the keeper by manipulating the handle D, but when the vhasp of the padlock is inserted through the hole 7 of the lower end portion of said member I, said hasp co-operates with the .end wall of the casing to prevent upward movement of the member I, thereby securely locking the latch B in engagement with the keeper C, due, of course, to the fact that themember I is attached to the link Eofthe latch operating mechanism.
In latches of this general character it is frequently necessary to disconnect the handie from the means that is used to transmit movement from said handle to the latch. My improved latch is so constructed that this can be done without dismounting the handle or the part of the latch operating mechanism to which the handle is connected; I
the casing A being open on'one side, as
shown in Figure 1, thus making the cotter link E is pivotally connected tothe angtr larly-disposed arm 3 of thehandle by means of a transversely-disposod pivot pin 9 that is retained in position by a cotter key 8, the portion of the casing of the lock inside o'f which the arm 3 is arranged being provided in its side wall with a hole 9aiso as to permit the pivot pin 7 to he moved laterally out of engagement with the link E and arnii-l after the cotter key 8 has been withdrawn from said pin.
Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A refrigerator lately comprising a oasing, a latch inside of said casing having a portionprojeeting outwardly through the casing, a pivotally ll'lOlll'llLKl handle on the exterior of the casing provided with an an gnlarly-disposed arm that projects into the casing, a part thatjoinssaidarin with the latch, a pivot pin arranged on the inside of the casing for connecting said arm and part together, and a hole in thecasing arranged so that said pivot pin can he moved laterally through the casing out of engagement with said arm and part without disinounting said part or handle 'liroin thecasing.
2. A refrigeratorlatch, comprising a castogether, an opening in the casing through which said pivot pin can heinoved laterally without disconnecting said handle or link from the exterior ofthe casing, member inside of the casing attached to said link and projecting dmvnwardly through the lower endn'all of thecaslng, said n'leinher it having, a hole for receiving a locking device that co-ope ates with theend wall of the casing to retain the latch in engagement with the keeper, and a spring-actuated trigger arranged to automatically engage the latch and hold it in an elevated position after said latch has been, disengaged from I the keeper. i i
