WRENCH.
Application filed November This invention relates to improvements in wrenches ot the parallel jaws type in whichr one of thejaws is carried by a main stock Y and the other .jaw carried'by an auxiliary stock, the tivo jaws being'inaintained in parallclrelation byparallel links pivotally connecting the auxiliary stock with a sleeve adjustable .on the main stock. The object ot the invention is 'to provide means tor holding the sleeve in rits adjustments on the main stock, said means being easily yoperated and permitting a quick adjustment of the jaws to meet the requirements.
The invention consists in the novel con struction, combination and arrangement oiE parts, hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claim, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings. 'Y
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corre-V sponding parts:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a wrench embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation,
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the main stock, y Y
Fig. 4 is a view partly in plan and partly in longitudinal section, and Y Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are sectional views on the lines 55, 6 6 and 7 7, respectively, of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 designates the main stock ot the implement with one end shaped toiorm a handle 11. On the other end of the stock is formed the jaw `12 with the claw 13 seated on its face. Slidable on the main stock is the sleeve 14, the stock and sleeve being` rectangular in cross-section, as to their meeting faces, so that the sleeve cannot turn on the stock. Pivoted to the outer side ot' the sleeve are ends ot the tour links 15, the other ends oi these links are pivoted to the auxiliary stock 16 carrying the other jaw 17 of the implement. rEhe sleeve, links and auxiliaryy stock are so proportioned and connected as to form a jointed parallelogram.
Each pair of links is hinged at one. end to the sleeve by a pin 18 passing through the ends oi' the links and the boss 19 on the outer side of the casing; the other end of each pair of links is hinged tothe auxiliary stockby the pin 20 passing through theends of the links and the body of thev auxiliary 13, 1926. Serial No. 148,194.
stock.. vEach pin 2O is held in place by a head at one end and a Cotter pin passing through the other end. The hinged parallelogram 'Formation of vthe parts comprising the auxiliary stock, the links, and the sleeve slidable on the main stock serves to niaintain the faces of the opposing jaws in parallel relation irrespective oi: the movement of the sleeve onV the main stock, The rearward movement oi' the auxiliary stock with relation `to. the sleeve is limited by the rear pair oi' links striking' the abutinents 21 extending from the opposite sides.
The sleeve 14 is provided with means for holding it in its adjustments on the main stock. In vthe forwardend of the outer side of the sleeve is an opening in which is seated the nipple 22. Guided in this nipple is the bolt 23 adapted to engage the sockets 24 formed in the outer side of the main stock. At an intermediate part the forward boss 1S) is transversely recessed and extending through vthe recess is the lever 25 pivoteo on the pin 18 passing through the boss. The forward end of the lever extends through the side of the nipple 22 and is forked to engage the neck or reduced part of the bolt 23. Between the rear end of the lever and the sleeve is interposed the coiled spring 26 under compression that normally tends to press the rear end of the lever outwardly. Consequently, the front end of the lever normally tends to -press the bolt 23 inwardly to engage any of the sockets 24 that may be in register with the bore of the nipple. The inner end kof the coil is seated in a socket in the wall ofthe sleeve and the other end is engaged by a lug on the underside of the lover, the spring being held against accidenetal displacement. The outer face of the rear end of the lever is shaped to torni a tingen piece so that the lever can be readily depressed to raise the bolt from engagement with a socket. By adjusting the sleeve on. the main stock the opening between the jaws can be regulated to meet the requirements oi' the work.
The claw plates 13 on the face of the jaws 12 and 17 havetheir respective teeth 'extending in opposite directions to meet the requirementsoi the implement used as a pipe Wrench. Theiplate on the claw 12 has its teethprojecting forward tof engage the pipe "1Q and'at the outererid of jaw 17, extends 'air abutnentf) engaging a'reces'sed end 'of the claw plate to hold the plateraga'instf the'Y thrust fof ythe"vvo`1"l{. Each plate is held in vplace-by a screw `30passing throughY` the'fjaw into the claw plate. 'To' facilitate the attachnient and removal of the claw plates, ja screw-driver Blis' provided thaty is particularly shaped to'it the s'crewhead andvvhen" on the forward thrust ot the main stock, While the teeth of the plate on the jaw 17 project rearward to engage thejpi'pe sduring the pull-of the aiiXiliary 'stocklduring` a' pipeturning operation. The clavv platesv are detachably inountedon the aWs so that they can he replaced when they4 become Worn.
In the face of each jaw is a longitudinal' re-f" cess 27 into which fits a longitudinal projection 28 on the backof the saidfplatef-Acrss the `tace of each jaw, at the inner V end of jaw not 'in'nse is turned into'ithe socket' 32 `inf-'the end of the handle 1l.
