Description

Nov. 29, 1927. 1,651,023
I J. F. HANNA CAN AND JAR CLOSURE Filed Sept. 17. 1925 Patented Nov. 29, 1927.
UNITED STATES JOSEPH F. HANNA, F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAN AND JAR CLOSURE.
Application filed September 17, 1925. Serial No. 56,804.
This invention relates to closures or covers for cans, ars or other containers of preserved foods or other products, the closures or covers including removable directions for the handling of the contents or a recipe booklet.
The principal object of this invention is a closure or cover provided with a chamber or pocket for the reception and retention of a book of recipes or directions of handling and including means for the removal of the book without disclosing or exposing the contents of the container.
A further object is a recipe book adapted for the insertion in a can or jar closure or cover. provided with means for the retentlon of the book, the book being adapted to be removed without exposing the contents of the can or jar.
invention comprises the construction, combination and arrangement hereinafter more fully described, preferred and modified embodiments whereof ar illustrated in the accompanying drawing and embraced within the scope of the appended claims.
In the said drawing Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of the improvedclosure or cover shown in connection 0 with a jar.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the closure or cover and of a recipe booklet therein.
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a. modified form of closure or cover shown in connection with a jar.
Fig. 4 is a top view of the closure or cover shown in Fig. 3 and ofa modified form of booklet therefor.
Fig. 5 is a top view of another modified form of closure or cover and of a booklet therefor.
The closure or cover illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing comprises a hollowed or cup-shaped stopper 4, depending from an annular disc 5, the opening of the disc being of lesser diameter than that of the stopper, the periphery of the opening being polygonal and comprised of short sides 6 alternating with long sides 7 The disc 5 is provided externally with a circumferential flange 8 inclosing the neck 9 of the jar 10 with the stopper portion 4 depending from the disc interiorly of the 1 A recipe book 11, including the top leaf or cover marked rug z, is provided with a WVith the above and related objects this hinge 12, and has its edges trimmed to form a polygon corresponding and adapted to register with that of the disc opening to permit of its insertion through the opening inside the stopper. To retain the book inside the stoppenit is turned either by means of the hinge 12 or by means of the edges 13 of the cut out or slit of the top leaf or cover of the book under the disc until the short sides of the book are intermediate the short sides 6 of the periphery of the opening, the disc covering the portions 14 of the book. To remove the book from the stopper it is turned until the corresponding sides of the polygons are in registration, when the book may be pulled out either by taking hold of the hinge 12 or an edge 13.
The closure or cover illustrated .in Fig. 3 comprises a stopper 15 provided with a circular flange or rim 16 adapted to rest upon the top of the neck 9 of the jar 10, and the cover 17 is mounted on top of the rim 16 with the flange 8 eXteriorly of the neck of the jar. The cover is provided centrallywith a. cir cular opening of a diameter smaller than that of the stopper. A recipe book 18 is provided with a periphery 19 of a diameter larger than that of the cover opening. With this arrangement the book is inserted inside the stopper first and the cover mounted sub sequently, and when the book is to be removed the cover is first removed and the book'after.
The closure or cover illustrated in Fig. 5 is similar to that shown in Figures 1 and 2 except that the.periphery 20 of the annular opening of the disc 5 is provided with recesses 21 for the insertion of the projections 23 ofa booklet provided with a periphery 24 which is of sligthly smaller diameter than that'of the periphery of the disc 5, the projections 23 being slightly larger than the recesses 21'. The above construction permits of the insertion of the booklet by the applica tion of a slight finger pressure and of the retention of the booklet without the necessity of turning, the slight opening between the peripheries providing for the insertion of the finger nails for the removal of the booklet.
It will be understood that instead of making the periphery 24 smaller and the extensions 21 larger than those of the disc 5, the order may be reversed for the accomplishment of the same object, Since as shown above the booklet for the cover shown in Fig. 5 need not be turned, it need not be provided with a hinge like that shown in Figure 2.
It will also be understood that if the top leaf of the booklet shown in Fig. 2 is slit or cut out as at 13 it need not be provided with a hinge, the slit or the edges of the cut out serving as means for the removal of the booklet. 7
:It will also be understood that the booklet shown in Fig; 4 may be comprised of a number of loose leaves. a. t
