HEADLIGHT-LENS-RIM TOOL.
Application filed March 9, 1926. Serial no. 93,470.
This invention relates to tools for facilitating the application and removal of headlight lens rims, and has for its primary object to improve and simplify toolsv of l3l11S- general character. v f
To the attainment of this end, my improved tool constitutes the provision of a spring metal band that is adapted to be contracted upon the rim, means being provided for retaining the band in contracted condition, after which the same may be turned for obviously turning the rim onto or of! of the headlight, said band being provided with a handle member to facilitate the turning thereof.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a tool that may be readily adjusted to enable the use of the same in applying or removing headlight lens rims of various sizes.
A further object is to construct a tool of this character that may be operated by inexperienced persons and that the same including but few parts and these being so associated as to enable the operator to readilylunderstand the manner of use of the too Other objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention is' better understood, the same comprising the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing y The figure is a plan view partly in section of my improved tool.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, the tool constitutes the provision of a spring metal band 5 upon the inner face of which is a lining 6 to prevent marring of the headlight lens rim during use of the tool.
One end of the band 5 is bent outwardly at right angles to provide an ear 7, while rigidly secured to the other end of the band is the inner end of a metallic arm 8. Pivotally secured to the outer end of this arm 8" nut 12 in order that the band 5 may be readily expanded or contracted to facilitate the use thereof upon rims of various sizes.
Also pivoted to the hand lever 10 and ex: tending outwardly in an opposite direction from the bolt 11 is a locking lever 13 that extends forwardly toward the adjacent end of the band 5 and has slidable engagement within a notch 14 at'the upper edge of an outwardly extending ear 15. formed integrally with the inner end of the arm 8 that is attached to said end of the band 5 as tracted upon the rim and retained in the.
contracted condition by reason of the engagement of the teeth 16 with the ear 15.
In order that the band may be held from turning movement While in use, the same is provided with a rigid handle 18in spaced relation with the end of the band opposite from that to which the pivoted lever 10 is secured.
The detailed operation of a tool of this character will be readily understood, and
even though I have herein shown and de scribed the same as constituting certain structural elements, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without aifecting the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what 7 I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A tool of the class described comprising a split resilient body encircling band, one end of which is bent to provide an outwardly directed apertured ear, an arm rigidly secured at its inner end to the opposite end of the band, the inner end portion of the arm being directed outwardly to form an ear, said ear being provided with a notch, a handle lever pivotally connected to the outer end of the arm, a bolt pivotally connected to the said lever and extending through the apertured ear, a retaining nut carried by the spring connected with the free end of the outer threaded end of the bolt and adapted locking lever and with said band for mainfor engagement with the aforementioned taining the teeth in en agement with the 10 apertured ear, a locking lever pivotallyconnotched ear, and a rigi handle carried by 5 nected to the handle lever, teeth formed on the band.
the underside of said locking lever for en- In testimony whereof I aflix my si nature. gageinent with the bottom of the notch, 11 ARTHUR P. ST. A BIN.
