BENCH y orinar?.l i
Appiieanon 'flied April 16', 19,27.` serial N6. 1845342.
The object of my said invention is the provision of a. simple and eliicient bench` clamp and one that is capable of bei'ngexpeditiously and easily operated. 'Y y To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement hereinafterdescribed and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of 'this specification io VFigure 1 is a top plan view of the benchl clamp constituting the preferred embodi-A ment of my invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the clamp; l
Figure 3 comprises disconnectedl perspectives of the rectilinearly movable slide mem- `beriof'the clamp and the rubber facing for usevat the under side of said slide member. Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding` parts in all of the views of the drawing.
I show iii Figures 1- and 2 the body 1 of my'novel clamp, the said body 1 being designed to be superposed on a bench or other appropriate support,- and also designed to be fastened to the bench or support by lnails or screws, not shown, driven through apertures in lugs 2X. The major portionofthe body'l is formed by a plate 2, and at its under side the plate y2 is provided with ai marginal flange 3 from which the lugs 2'Y extend and with longitudinal spaced pendent flanges 3X,
the said flanges 3 and 3X being designed to bear on the surface of the bench so that the plate 2 will be maintained in spaced relation to the said surface. stood that the body 1 is provided with an up standing integral flange 4, the said Vflange 4 being preferably, though not necessarily'V between tbe face of the flange or 4 and the movable -jaw 11 of the clamp.
" The movable jaw 11 is superposed upon the body plate 2 and is provided with' an abutment 12 at one end, ydisposed laterally to the major portion of the j aw and it will It will also be under-- the clamp to readily ascertain lthe distance.
also be understood that the jaw 1l is preferably, .though not necessarily, provided with a facing 13 of wood or other material design-ed to prevent bruising of wood or other comparatively soft'material interposed and held bet-Ween theaw 4 andthe jaw 11. `At
its rear side the jaw l1 is provided with av flange'14 spaced above the plate 2,' Figure 2 and it will be understood that the said flange" 14'is provided with an enlargement' 15 in]A which is a slot 1G extending at an acute angle to the 'face of the jaw 11. A
The slide member 10y of the clamp is dis?? posed above the plate 2 `and isV provided, by.` preference, at its underside with a facing 10X. of rubber or other'friction creating ymaterial, the said facing 10X beingin'the form of a strip appropriately attached to the under s ide ofthe slide member 10, `andithe said facing being designed'tov enable the slidez member 10 to take better hold' on the upper side of the plate 2 when the wing nut 17 on the headed bolt 18 is tightened. The said headed bolt 18kr is extended through the slot 7 ofthe body 1 and also through aper-v tures'in the strip 10X'and theslide member 1Q, and is equipped below the plate-2 with a washer 19, and above the slide member l() with a washer 20. The slide member 10is also equippedwith a vertical pin 21,V the said pin 21 having a port-ion21x-below the member 10 and arranged and movable in theV slot 7 for .the guidance of the slide member 10, and said pin 21 beingfalso provided'with a T-head 22 designed'to rest above the flange 14 of the-j aw 11 with a view to securing the said jaw flange 14 to and on the. slide member 10. f
It will'be apparent from the foregoing`l that the movable aw 11 of my novel clamp is capable of simultaneous longitudinal and lateral movement. The piece of material to beyclamped is designated'by 50 in Figures 1 and 2, andit'will'be understood that when the said piece of material is moved endwise against the abutment 12 of the jaw l1, the said jaw 11 willbe simultaneously "moved` forward and laterally toward the jaw 4,.'a-nd in consequence the j aw 11 and the jaw 4`will` grip thelpiecevof material throughout the length and height of the jaws and will hold it strongly Vuntil released by a rearward movement of the piece of material, the re' traction of the piece vof material'servingby virtue of thev frictional contact'between the material and the face ofthe jaw l1 to move the said jaw 11 rearwardly and laterally away fromnjaw'fi.
It will also be apparent from the foregoing that the slide member 10 and its appurtenances permits of the clamp being changed from right to left hand and vice versa, and the said slide member and its appurtenances also provide for the ready adjustment of the clamp to pieces of material ofL ydifferent sizes. The reversible capacity ofthe clamp will better be understood when it is stat-ed that the clamp can be changed fromv right'hand to left hand, or from left hand to right hand in a very short time, and in order to make the change it is simply necessary to move the slide member 10 as far as possible from the jaw 4, turn the wing` nut 17 so thatits lwings are'longitudinal of the slide member 10, and move the jaw 1l endwise rearwardly and manipulate the saine so that its slot 16 is lengthwise of the T-head 22, lift theja-w 11 ofi thepin 21, turn the jaw 11 upside down, and then replace the jawV 11 on the pin 21. The positioning of the wings of the n ut y17 as stated is necessary for the said manipulation of the jaw 11. y
In order to assist in the return of the movable jaw to open lposition and render it-easier` to placel a piece lof material in the cla-mp I provide a retractile spring 60. At one' end the said spring is connected to the movable jaw, and atits opposite end the `spring is equipped with a pin 61, designed to be removably placed in any one of the lower set of sockets 62, the said set of sockets being employed so that the spring may be tensioned as desired by the operator of the clamp. Manifestly when the clamp is changed for use as a left hand clamp, as before indicated, the pin` 61 will be placed in one ofthe upper sets of sockets 62, Figure 1.
Notwithstanding the capacity of function ascribed tomy nov-el clamp, it will be noted that the clamp is simple and inexpensive in construction, and in general is well adapted to withstand the usage to which bench and analogous clamps are ordinarily subjected.
.l have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in, Aorder to impart a full, clear and exact. understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as limiting myself to the precise structure illustrated and described, my invention being defined Vby my appended claims within the scope of which modifica-tions maybe made without departure from my invention. l
