IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET STRETCHERS AND HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,022., dated June 29, 1875; application tiled May 5, 1875.

To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL PETERS, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet Stretcher and Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompa nyi-ng drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.

The object of my invention is to provide a combined carpet stretcher and holder that is cheap, useful, and strong, and within the reach of housekeepers and others; audit consists of a handle, provided at its front end with a toothed or serrated two-pronged iron, with an open space for stretching and holding the carpet on both sides of the nail or tackintended to be driven into the carpet, and at the rear end of said handle is a strong, bent prong, which assists in holding the carpet while the nail is driven home.

- In the accompanying drawing, A represents asuitable handle of wood, or 'any other ma terial, and is provided with a ferrule, (0,110 prevent it from splitting. Into the frontend of this handle a strong but light iron or other metal piece, B, is driven or secured, having two or more prongs, b b, with toothed, serrated, or roughened ends, to engage with, stretch, and hold the carpet, and between said prongs an open space, 0, is left, to allow the nails or tacks to be driven entirely home without the necessity of withdrawing the device, as is the case with the hand carpet-stretchers now in use. Into the rear end of the handle A a strong, bent, and pointed prong, D, is driven or otherwise secured, by which the carpet is held while it is being nailed or tacked.

The operation in using my invention is as follows: The prongs b b of the iron B are inserted into the carpet, and it is then stretched and forced to the place desired. The rear end of the handle, with prong D, is held down by the hand, and assists in holding the carpet,

while the nails or tacks are driven entirely home in the open space 0 before removing the device.

The advantages of my device will be readily understood by housekeepers and others needing the same; it can be furnished at a very small cost, and is durable and not liable to get out of order.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv As a new article of manufacture, the carpet stretcher and holder herein described, consisting of the handle A, donble-pronged iron B, having toothed ends I) b, and the bent prong D, all constructed as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
