IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,970., dated J one 29, 1875; application filed September 23, 187 4.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL GAIN, of N eversink, county of Sullivan and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Rein-Holders.

The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent oftheUnited States.

My invention relates to that class of appliances commonly known as rein-holders and the nature thereof consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, and novel combinations of the parts thereof, hereinafter shown and described.

In the accompanying plate of drawings, in which corresponding parts are illustrated by similar letters, Figure 1 is a perspective view, illustrating the fastener firmly secured to the dash-board of a vehicle. Fig. 2 illustrates in detail the spring.

The fastener is constructed of malleable iron, and may be ornamented or plated to suit the taste of the manufacturer. It is provided with plates at, intersecting at the point b, and secured to the dash-board of a vehicle by the screw and nut 0 upon the end of a bolt which passes transversely through the said plates, the opening between the plates be-- ing of sufficient width to allow the dashboard to be inserted between them. Above the point of intersect-ion of the plate a are the jaws d, having curvilinear and polpted ends. Between these jaws a tongue-piece, g, is so pivoted as to be capable of a slight vibratory movement, in order to allow the reins to be inserted between the same and the jaws d. The said tongue piece is held in position by the spring h attached to the fastener.

The operation of the device is automatic and simple. The driver merely drops the reins over the pointed end of the tongue in such a manner that one rein shall fall on one side thereof, and one on the other, and the elastic force of the spring holdsthem firmly between the tongue and the jaws.

Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improvement upon the patent gran ted to J. J. Robinson March 31, 1871, the combination of the plates (1, screw-bolt c, jaws d, tongue -piece 9, and spring h, all to operate as and for the purposes described.
