Other objects of this invention, not at this une'r more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the saine.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows in part a side elevation and in part a sectional view of the iron.
Referring now to said drawing, the reference character 1 indicatesthe body portion of the iron, which is suitably formed to provide a hollow interior 2. Arranged in connection with the lower part of said hollow interior is a suitable heating means, preferably in the form of an electrical heating unit (not shown) adapted to cooperate with the pressing face portion 3 of the iron body'. Suitably attached .to the upper side of said iron body 1, by bail members 4, is a hand grip member 5 by means of which the iron may be grasped and manipulated.
The reference. character 6 indicates an air r pipe which is provided with a suitable control valve. 'lhe forward or 'discharge end of said air pipe is extended downwardly to the toe ot' the iron, and connected with said discharge end is an air jet member 7 the free end of which is exteriorly disposed at the toe of the iron. Said air pipe 6 may be supported in connection with the iron structure in any manner and by any means found desirable and convenient, but preferably is mounted in connection with and supported by said hand grip-member 5 by extending the same rearwardly and longitudinally there through, las shown in the drawing. .Con-` nected with the rear end'of said air pipe 6,l

ible air hose`11 leading from any suitable source of air under pressure.A Rotatably mounted in said valve casing 8 is a valve member 12 having a valve port 13 normally yturned out of alinement intermediate the intake port 9 and the bore ,of said air pipe 6. Secured to'tlie external end of said valve member 12 is an actuating lever 14 normally positioned in upwardly swung relation to the hand grip member 5 as determined by a stop proJection 15 on the valve casing, in which disposition the valve member is turned to air cut-ofi or closed position. A spring means, as 16, may be utilized in connection with said lever 14 to hold the latter in normal valve closing position.
Secured within the upper portion of the hollow interior 2 of said iron body isa suitabl water reservoir 17. Associated' with sai Vwater reservoir is a water discharge siphon 18, the rising leg 19 of which rises upwardly from the lower interior of said reservcir, and the descending leg 2O of which pro]ects exteriorly and is carried downwardly and forwardly so that its free or discharge end 21 projects from the toe of the iron with an upturned extremity 22 arranged to terminate in front of said air jet member 7 with is extremity exposed in the path of the air discharged from the latter, and preferably substantially at right angles thereto.
A means for breaking the Siphon to disl continue the flow of water therethrough is provided. This breaking means comprises an air port 23 formed in the wall ofsaid rising leg 19 adjacent to the 4elbow of the Siphon, through which, when open, air niav enter the Siphon passage to interrupt and prevent the rise of water through said rising leg. A ball valve 24 cooperates with said air port 23, the same being disposed in a housing chamber 25, the latter being also provided with an air intake port 26 leading into the interior of the saine. l
H desired the water reservoir 17 may be provided with an automatic means for maintaining a supply of water within the same., similar to that shown and described in my copending .application for Letters Patent Ser. No. 68,561, filed November 12th, 1925. Said means preferably comprises forming said reservoir 17 in the form of a relatively thin metallic shell, the bottom 27 of which is more or less resilient and yieldable to downward pressure. Fixed on the top of said iron/ CFI body is a'water delivery member 28 provided with an intake duct or passage 29, which terminates at its inner end in an intake valve housing 30, from the lower side of which extends a valve pasage 31 into communication withthe interior of said water reservoir 17. Surrounding the upper end of said valve passage 31 is a valve seat 32. Secured to the resilient bottom 27 of said reservoir is an upwardly extending valve stem 33, to the upper free end of which is attached a valve member 34 for cooperation with said valve seat 32. The upper end of the valve housing 30 may be provided with a detachable cap 35, and, if desired, a pu1l-spring 36 may be connected between said cap 35 and valve member 34 to assist the opening movement of the latter. Suitably coupled with the outer end of said water delivery member 28, in communication with the duct or passage 29, is a flexible water feed conduit or pipe 37 leading 'fromv al suitable source of water supply.
The operation of the iron is as follows Water is supplied through the feed conduit or pipe 37. If the reservoir 17 is empty, the bottom 27 thereof will be disposed in normal initial rai-sed position, and consequently the stem 33 of the valve 34 Will be moved upward to unseat the latter and thus open the valve passage 31,v to the flow of water from said feed conduit or pipe 37 into the interior of the reservoir 17. As the reservoir fills, the weight of the/water upon the resilient bottom 27 thereof will tend to depress the latter, thus drawing downward the stem 33 until the valve member 34 seats itself and closes the valve passage 31 against further entrance of water. As the water is drawn out of the reservoir 17, when using the iron, and the initial weight of water is thereby reduced, the bottom 27 will tend to resume normal initial raised position, thus again unseating the valve member 34 for renewed entrance of water into the reservoir to compensate for the losses of use. As will be evident the action of the Water admission valve 34 is thus automatic, and intermittent opening and closing of the same will automatically maintain an adequate supply of water within the reservoir 17 ready for use.
The water reservoir being iilled, the iron is heated, whereupon the same is ready for use. If, as the pressing operation is carried out, the operator desires to dampen the goods, the air control valve is actuated by a proper manipulation of the lever 14, so that air, from a suitable source of supply under pressure, is caused to pass through the air pipe 6, and jet member 7 so as to be discharged from the latter. The blast of air thus produced sweeps past the discharge extremity 22 of the siphon 18, thus creating a suction within the latter, which is effec/-y tive both to move the ball valve 24 into a tine spray in advance of the onward movement of the iron. 'lhe water thus deposited on the goods will dampen the same, so that as the hot iron advances over the thus dam cned goods, the heat will evaporate t e water and the moisture will assist the rapid yand etlicient smoothing out of the. goods by the iron, in the manner well understood by those skilled in the art.
Vhen it is desired to discontinue service vo f Water spray to the goods, the operator simply releases the lever 14 of the air control valve thus discontinuing the discharge of air from the jet 7. The discharge of the air being thus discontinued, the suction effect thereof on the discharge end of the siphon stops and consequently the ball valve 24 is permitted to fall away from the air port 23 of the siphon, whereby the entrance of air into the rising leg the siphonic action, and delivery of water ceases. If desired the toe portion of the iron may be provided, at a point beneath the discharge extremity of the Siphon with a suitably formed catch-basin 38, which serves to catch and hold away from the goods any drip 'from the siphon, which might occur upon discontinuance of its siphonicaction.
I amaware that some changes may be mad-e in the general arrangen'ients and 'combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, and I therefore reserve the right to such construction as do not depart from the scope of this invention as defined 1n the appended claims.
I claim 1. The combination with a sad iron of a water reservoir carried thereby, water discharge means communicating with said reservoir, and an air jet means coacting with said water discharge means for discharging an atomized mixture of air and water exteriorly of said iron.
2. The combination with a sad iron of a water reservoir carried thereby, a water delivery Siphon leading from said reservoir with its discharge extremity exteriorly disposed at the toe of the iron, and a valve controlled compressed air delivery means having a jet positioned to discharge an air 19 of the latter breaks stream across the discharge extremity of said siphon.
3. The combination with a sad iron of a Water reservoir carried thereby, a water supply pipe leading to said reservoir, automatic means for controlling the `ilow of Water from said supply pipe into said reservoir, a Water discharge means leading out of said reservoir, and an air jet means coacting with said Water discharge means for discharging an atomized mixture of air and Water exteriorly of said iron.
4. The combination with a sad iron of a Water reservoir carried thereby, a-water supply pipe leading to said reservoir, automatic means for controlling the low of Water from said supply pipe into said'reservoir, a Water delivery siphon leading from said reservoir vwith its discharge extremity exteriorly disposed at the toe of the iron, and a valve controlled compressed air delivery means having a jet positioned to discharge an air stream across the discharge extremity of said siphon.
5. The combination with a sad iron of a water reservoir carried thereby, a water delivery siphon leading from said reservoir with its discharge extremity exteriorly disposed at the toe of the iron, the ascending leg of said siphon having an opening, al normally un'seatedl valve for closing said opening, and a valve controlled compressed air delivery means, the discharge ends of said siphon and air delivery means being adjacently arranged to discharge an atomized mixture of air and water exteriorly and in advance of the iron.
6. The combination with a sad iron of a water reservoir carried thereby, a water delivery siphon leading from said reservoir with its discharge extremity exteriorly disposed at the toe of the iron, the ascending leg of said siphon having an opening, a normally unseated valve for closing said opening, a valve controlled compressed air delivery means, the discharge ends of said siphon and air delivery means being adjacently arranged to discharge an atomized mixture of air and water exteriorly and in l'advance of the iron, and a catch-basin por- Water reservoir carried thereby, a water supply pipe leading to said reservoir automatic means for controlling the flow of water from said supply pipe into said reservoir, a water delivery siphon leading from said reservoir with its discharge extremity exteriorly disposed at the toe of the iron, the ascending leg of said siphon having an opening, a normally unseated valve for closing said opening, and a valve controlled compressed air delivery means, the discharge ends of said siphon and air delivery means being adjacently arranged to discharge an atomized mixture of air and Water exteriorly and in advance of the iron.
8. The combination with a sad iron of a Water reservoir carried thereby, a water supply pipe leading to said reservoir, automatic means for controlling the ilow of Water from said supply pipe into said reservoir, a Water delivery siphon leading from said reservoir with its discharge extremity exteriorly disposed at the toe of the iron, the ascending leg of said siphon having an opening, a normally unseated valve for closing sald opening, a valve controlled compressed air delivery means the discharge ends of said siphon and air de ivery means being adjacently ar'- ranged to discharge an atomized mixture of air and water exteriorly and in advance of the iron, and a catch-basin portion provided in connection with the toe of said iron and disposed beneath the discharge extremity of said siphon to catch the drip from the latter when siphonic action is discontinued.
