Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
oTIs NORTON, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF SHEARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,930, dated June 29, 1875; application filed September 5, 1874.
in the method of attaching the malleable castiron handle by a tag or hook at one end in a mortise of a size and shape corresponding to said tag or hook in one end of the steel blade, whereby the said two parts are easily and conveniently held in position preparatory to welding.
Figure 1 shows a malleable-iron handle and steel blade in detached parts. Fig. 2 shows the handle and blade clasped or put together to be welded.
a is the malleable'iron handle. b is the steel blade, designed to be punched from sheet metal, having an orifice, c, at the upper end, which, in placing the two parts in the process of manufacture, comes next to and upon the lower end of the handle portion of the shears. This orifice or opening is of such shape and size that it is exactly adapted to receive the grappling hook or tag 61 of the handle, which is a flat thin endof the handle a, olfset from it and connected with it by shoulder a. When this end is put through the said opening c,and the handle and blade placed in line or position horizontally, the said tag or end comes flat upon the upper face of blade b, while the edges of orifice 0 will come more or less close] y in contact with the surface of the shoulder a. When thus placed and adjusted, the parts are in readiness for welding, and after the welding process is performed they are finished and put together in the common way. Thus I am enabled to produce a cheaper and better article for use and trade.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improvement in the art of attaching the blades of scissors and shears to their handles, the construction of the handle with the hook or tag 61 and shoulder a, and the blade with the mortise c, for more conveniently retaining the parts in their proper relative positions preparatory to welding.
