VOICE 1 R TOYS.
Application filed November 29, 1921, Serial No. 518,598. Renewed February 12, 1927.
The invention relates to sound'producing devices and more particularly to devices adapted for incorporation in toy eiiigies of human beings and animals, such as dolls and the like, and has for its object to provide a novel and simple device arranged to produce predetermined sounds in simulation of natural sounds associated. with the original which is represented by the efiigy.
1a The invention contemplates further the In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a sounding device disclosing one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view similar to Figure 1 but shown tilted with the parts moved to a different position.
Figure 3 is an end view oi the structure shown in Figure 1. Y
Figure 4-. is a sectional view through Fig- ,i.) ure 1 approximately on line a d.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a tubular casing formed oi any desired material and provided with a cap 2 at one end which may be removably or rigidly secured in place but when in place seals the end of the casing 1 air-tight. 'The cap 2 is provided with an aperture 3 oi'considerable size and adjacent this aperture on the outside of the cap is a small covering cap or container 4t in which a reed tube 5 is mounted so that one end will project beyond the-covering a9 41. A reed 6, provided with upturned lip (3, is mounted on the reed tube 5 so that when sufficient volume, the reed 6 will produce a sound. This reed and reed tube are so proportioned as to produce a crying sound. Centrally of the casing 1 is arranged a 5 partition 7 which provided with an aperair is forced into the covering cap 4 in :1
turc 8 at the center for receiving and guidmg the stem 9, which stem is appreciably smaller than the aperture whereby air may be forced from the bellows chamber 10 into the reed chamber 11 and from thence through aperture 3 for operating the reed 6. Arranged'in the bellows chamber 10 is a flexible bellows 12 constructed. similar to the bellows set forth in my prior Patent No. 1,277,229, issued August 27, 1918. This bel lows is provided with a head 13 rigidly secured to the casing 1 and provided with an air opening 1% designed to discharge air into the chamber 15 formed by the cap'16. A head or COlhPl'GSSlOH member 17 ot' considerable weight, preferably formed with a circular periphery, is arranged at the opposite end of the bellows and acts to collapse the bellows as shown in Figure 2 when turned in the right direction, namely, so that the opening let will be in a lowered position. The stem 9 extends loosely through the hole 13 and carries valve disks 18 and 19 which are adapted to pass through the opening or mouth 20 in the division plate 21 and also pass through the rubber lips 22 whereby an articulation is produced. These valve disks pass through the lips 22 as the reed 23, provided with upturned lip 23 is sounding, said reed being associated with a reed tube 2 1- extending from the chamber 15 into the chamber 25. When the bellows 12 is dis tended, both of the valve disks are posiiii tioned in the chamber 25 so that as the device is tilted and the weighted head or compresfion member 17 begins to collapse the bellows, a sound will be produced by the reed 23 and also the valve disk 18 will begin to pass through the lips As soon as it frees itself from the lips, the sound inn. will be produced and a little later a second sound ma will be produced as the disk 19 passes through the lips. This gives a sound very similar to a small child calling for its mother. The disks or abutments 18 and 19 during movement.relative to the sound escape opening, at which the resilient lip 22 is positioned, engage the resilient lip 22, and under the influence 01"" the compression member, the edge of the resilient lip 22 is picked up and travels for a short. distance with the disks or abutments 18 and 19 and is thereby put under slight tension, whereupon, as the distance between the sound escape opening and the disks or abutments 18 and 19 becomes greater the rubber lip snaps from the disks or abutments 18 and 19 and gives the initial sounds full and sharp articulation.
lVhen the device is inverted and the weight or compression member 17 begins to move toward the partition or division plate 7, air will be forced through the aperture 8 into the chamber 11 and from thence out through the reed tube 5. This will cause the reed 6 to give an unarticulated sound which is intended to resemble the crying of a child so that when the device is placed into a doll it may be caused to cry or say ma-ma.
It will be understood that the form in the drawing is only an example of the invention chosen for the purposes of illustration and description. The invention consists primarily of a tubular bellows member attached at one end to a stationary head, and at its other end to a movable head, in combination with a reed or equivalent sounding element "arried by one of said heads and a nontlexing member mounted upon one head and piercing the other head, with a clearance sufficient to permit free movement between the pierced head and the member and to guide said movable head and steady the bellows throughout its range of movements. To complete the operative structure, the movable head is weighted, for instance, by being provided with a weight of such proportions and heaviness as to operate the bellows by gravity alone and to compel its collapse 1111- aided by any other means, said weight being,
however, light enough to be retarded in its descent by the air in the collapsing bellows, so that, although the collapse is positive, it is gradual and relatively slow, whereby the desired sound effects are produced in a reliable and efiicient manner. In the preferred form, the single bellows is arranged to alternately operate devices whereby sounds of dill'erent predetermined characteristics are produced in simulation of natural sounds peculiar to the original of the toy efiigy in which the sound producing device is incorporated. It will, therefore, be noted that there is provided a double acting sound producer for toys having a body with perforated disks forming a bellows chamber in the body. It will also be noted that there are arranged reed boxes over the perforations in the disks with lips on said reed and means for articulating the sound coming from the lips of oneof said reeds.
