Description

H. G. GRAF ORCHARD HEATER LIGHTER Nov. 15, 1927.
If'iled March 5, 1923 atented Nov, 15,1927.
urrii stares ra'rsu'r HENRY G. GRAF, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR- TOAIvi ERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
ORCHARD-HEATER LIGHTER.
Application filed March 5, 1923.
The present invention relates to lighters for orchard heaters, or the like, of the Character which consists primarily of a container provided with an elongated spout and means at the end thereof for igniting gasolene, or like liquid fuel, as it is poured into the fuel receptacle of the heater.
A principal object of the invention is the provision of an arrangement of the igniting means, or wick, in a lighter of this type, so that it will not obstruct the flow of the oil and yet will be kept saturated by the oil flowing through the spout.
A further object is the provision of means for preventing the burning oil from dropping back into the container, or upon the hands of the user.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a lighter embodying my invention, certain parts being shown in side elevation; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view. taken substantially on the line 22 in Fig. 1.
In the lighters which have ordinarily been used for the purpose stated, the wick has been positioned in the outlet passage of the spout and, while this causes it to be kept constantly saturated, such an arrangement so obstructs the flow of the oil as to cause it to be unsatisfactory in service. My invention contemplates an arrangement of the wick outside the spout opening, but communicably connected therewith, thus insur ing saturation without obstructing the flow of the oil.
The structure whereby this is accomplished comprises a container 11 for the gasoline, or the like, this container being provided with a handle 12 and an elongated spout 13, which latter is secured in a dome shaped top 14- secured to the body of the container by a suitable seam 15. Said spout 13 extends through a bushing 16, which has screw-threaded engagement with an up standing collar 17 on said top 14. A vent 18 is provided in the top member 14 to ta Serial No. 622,724.
cilitate the flow of oil through the spout and this vent is adapted to be normally closed by a disk valve 19 positioned in a cap 21 secured to the outer surface of said top member, said valve being under the pressure of a small spring 22.
A wick 23 is held against the outer end of the spout 13 by means of a side pocket 24 secured to the exterior of the spout in any desired manner. The spout wall adjacent the wick is perforated, as shown at 25, to permit the oil flowing through the spout opening to saturate said wick. The outer portion 26 of the wick is disposed over the out-let opening in such manner as to cause the oil flowing from the latter to be ignited and the orchard heaters are lighted by the burning oil poured in this manner.
A cup 27 is positioned on the spout inwardly of the pocket 24 and is adapted to catch any burning oil dripping from the wick to prevent it from falling onto the container, or upon the hand of the user.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and It will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being mere- 1y a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim? 1. A lighter for. orchard heaters or the like, comprising an oil container, a pouring spout protruding therefrom, and a wick positioned at one side of the outer open end of said spout on the outside of the same and extending beyond the end of the spout.
2. A lighter for orchard heaters or the like, comprising an oil container, a pouring spout protruding therefrom, and a wick positioned at the outer open end of said spout on the outside of the same, said spout hav ing a lateral opening to the wick, said wick providing a pilot light and being adapted to be kept saturated by the oil flowing through said spout.
3. A lighter for orchard heaters or the like, comprising an oil container having a pouring spout projecting therefrom, and a pocket for a Wick said pocket being carried by the spout and secured on the outside of said spout at the open outer end of the same.
4. A lighter for orchard heaters or the like, comprising an oil container having a. spout extending from the top thereof, a
Wick, and a pocket at the outer end of said spout for holding, said wick on the outside of the spout in position to ignite the oil flowl0 ing from the spout, said spout and pocket being perforated adjacent the wick to cause saturation of the latter by the outflowin oil.
