LAMP.
Application filed June 16, 1925, Serial No.
My invention relates to lamps and more particularly to wind lamps, and it is an object of my invention to increase the light in tensity of such lamps.
To this end, l provide a combined heater and reflector atthe burner so that the efficiency of combustion is increased andthe light of the flame is intensified by reflection.
ln a preferred embodiment of my invention, l construct the reflector as an annular cup having inner and outer flanges, which cup is placed on the burner cap in an inverted position, the upturned bottom of the cup being polished and forming a reflector surface. A plate extends from the inner flange of the cup and acts as a closure for the heating chamber formed by said cup, and said plate supports the lamp globe outwardly of the outer flange of said cup.
The arrangement of the cup or hot-air chamber in the base of the lamp globe is an important improvement as compared with the present lamps where no means are provided for heating the air for combustion. Such air may be supplied through lateral pipes or through a perforated plate supporting the base of the globe.
lt has been proposed to protect the flame from sudden gusts of wind and to prevent sooting by arranging a plurality of perforated plates below said support for the globe but this is not satisfactory because the air is not heated and the cold air so admitted often brings about sooting which these means are intended to prevent.
These drawbacks are overcome in my invention where the intensity of the flame is increased not only by the complete combustion effected by heating the air for combustion but also by reflection.
ln lamps which require only a comparatively small amount of air for combustion, such air may be introduced through the interstices between the burner cap and the inner flange of the annular reflector cup.
ln the drawing, a device embodying my `invention is illustrated by way of example.
Fig. l is an elevation, partly in section, showing a reflector cup closed by a perforated plate at its open end,
Fig. Q is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. l.
Those parts of the wind lamp which appear in the drawings are constructed as usual and will, therefore, not be described in detail. 1 is the burner, 5 is the lamp 37,563, and in Germany October V3, 1924.
globeand 6 are the pipes supplying secondary air.
2 is an inverted annular cup forming a combined reflector and heater which is placed on the burner so that the burner projects from its central hole. The cup is inverted and its upturned bottom 3, which is prefer ably arched, is polished and serves as the re Hector. Primary air enters through the small interstice between the inner skirt of the cup 2 and the burner l and is heated on its way by the hot air in the chamber of the cup.
The heating chamber of the cup 2 formed by its inner and outer flanges is closed by the perforated plate 8 which is an extension of the inner flange of the cup and which con fines the air in thc chamber so that it is practically stagnant and very hot. The outer edge of the pla-te 8 is flanged and supports the lamp globe 5 between its flange and the outer flange of the cup 2.
I claim:
l. A lantern of the type described, including, in combination, a burner, a combined reflector and heater consisting of a substantially cup-shaped member adapted to be mounted upon said burner in an inverted position and having a central opening for receiving said burner and an inner flange supporting the member in position on. the burner with the uppermost surface of the member forming a reflector surface below the opening in said burner through which the burner Wick projects, an outer flange for said member depending from said reflector surface and combining with said inner flange to provide a heating chamber below said reflector surface, a plate forming an extension of said inner flange and providing a closure for said heating chamber, and a globe sup ported by said cup-shaped member exteriorly of said outer flange and with said reflector surface arranged interiorly of said globe.
2. A lantern of the type described, in cluding, in combination, a burner, a. combined reflector and heater consisting of a substantially cup-shaped member adapted to be mounted upon said burner in an inverted position and having a central opening for receiving said burner and an inner flange supporting the member in position on the burner with the uppermost surface of the member forming a reflector surface below the opening in said burner through which the lill tension projecting beyond said outer flange, 10
a globe supported upon said extension and surrounding said outer flange with said rev Hector surface disposed interiorly of the globe.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my l5 name to this specification.
