MINING MACHINE.
Application filed June 10, 1918, Serial No. 239,269. Renewed September 18, 1925.
This invention relates to mining machines, and more particularly, although not exclusively, to shearing machines, i. e., to machines or cutting vertical kerfs in a mine wall or ace.
The invention has for an object to provide an improved truck mounted machine of this character. A further object of the invention is to provide an improved machine adapted to operate upon a mine face extending transverse to the trackway upon which the machine travels, as in entry driving, or upon a face extending substantially parallel to said trackway, and at either side thereof, as in opening room necks; said machine being capable of producing a cut in any desired vertical plane, and comprising improved means for guiding the cutting mechanism into close proximity to the face to be cut, irrespective of the distance (within limits) of said face from the trackway, together with improved means for securely supporting the parts during the cutting operation.
The foreging and other objects of the invention, together with means whereby the same may be carried into effect, will best be understood from the following description of one form or embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings,- A
Fig. 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view, of the complete machine.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view2 partly broken away, of the cutting mechanism.
Figs. 4 and 5 are detail sections on the lines 4 4 and 5 5, respectively, Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is an elevation on a reduced scale, illustrating the operation of the machine in entry driving.
Fig. 7 is a plan view on a reduced scale, illustrating the position of the machine when operating upon a face parallel to the trackwav, as in opening a room neck.
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7, showing the parts adjusted to cause the cutting meollanism to cut at the opposite side of the machine.
The truck upon which the machine is transported comprises a pair of parallel ways 1f) connected at their rear ends by a transverse brace 18 and mounted on wheels 11 adapted to run upon the usual trackway,12. As herein shown, said truck is of the selfpropelled type, being driven by an electric or other motor 13 provided with a suitable controller 14 and connected by a sprocket chain 15 with the axle of the rear wheels 11.
Guided for movement longitudinally of the truck in the ways 10 is a slide 16, said slide being movable in said ways by means of a screw 17 in threaded engagement with said slide and journaled in the brace 18. Pivoted at one end at 19 to the slide 16, for movement transversely of the machine in a horizontal plane, is a supporting arm 20. Upon the opposite end of the arm 20 is mounted, for angular movement about a pivot 21, a guide or frame 22 provided with a pair of parallel, horizontally disposed ways 23 in which the cutting mechanism is mounted for movement longitudinally of said guide.
The cutting mechanism comprises a complete mining machine including a casing 24 containing the operating mechanism, and a cutter bar 25 carrying the usual cutter chain 26 provided with cutter bits 27. Said cutter bar is mounted, as hereinafter more fully described, to swing about the axis of a transverse horizontal shaft 28 having its ends fixed in the casing 24, and when so swung said cutter bar moves in a substantially vertical plane between the ways 23. The operating mechanism within the casing 24 comprises an electric or other motor 29 having a suitable controller 29a and a shaft 30 operatively connected with mechanism for moving the cutting mechanism in the ways 23, mechanism for actuating the cutter chain 26 on the bar 25, and mechanism for swinging the cutter bar 25 about the shaft 28.
For feeding or moving the cutting mechanism in the ways 23, there is provided a chain or other flexible feeding element 31 which, when in operation, is connected at one end to a suitable fixture 32 ait the forward end of one of the ways 23, passes about a feed sprocket 33 and guide sprockets 34 on the casing 24, and is connected at its o posite end to a suitable xture 35 at t e rear end of the guide 22. By rotating the feed sprocket 33 in one direction or the other, the cutting mechanism is moved longitudinally in the wafys 23, either forwardly or backwardly. For so rotating the feed sprocket 33, the following mechanism is provided. Fixed to the motor shaft 30 1s a inion 36 which meshes with a gear 37 fast on a shaft 38 suitably journaled in the casing 24 and carrying' a worm 39 which meshes with a worm gear 40 fast on an upright shaft 41 journaled in the casing 24 and in a horizontal web 42 therein. The feed sprocket 33 is loosely mounted on the shaft 41 and has secured thereto or formed integral therewith an internal gear 41 which meshes with a. pinion 4lb fast on an upright shaft 41 ]ournaled in a bracket 41Cl in the easing 24. The shaft 4lc has fast thereon a gear 41e which meshes with a gear 41f loose on the shaft 41. A double acting clutch 43 operated by a controlling handle 44 is adapted to connect either the sprocket 33 or the gear 41t to the shaft 41 for rotation therewith. thereby causing rotation of said feed sprocket in either direction. lVhen the clutch 43 is in the neutral position shown in Fig. 4 the feed sprocket is idle.
The cutter chain 26 is actuated by a sprocket 45 having a hub 46 rotatably mounted on the shaft 28. Keyed to the hub 46 is a bevel gear 47 which meshes with a bevel pinion 4S fast on a shaft 49 suitably journaled in the casing 24. Keyed or otherwise secured to the shaft 49 is a gear 50 which meshes with a pinion 5l on the front end of the motor shaft 30.
The cutter bar 25 is carried by an arm 52 projecting from a hub 53 rotatably mounted on the shaft 28. As shown in Figs. 2. and 3, the cutter bar 25 is laterally offset with respect to the arm 52 to bring said cutter bar into alinement with the sprocket 45. Keyed to the hub 53 is a worm gear 54 which meshes with a worm 55 on a longitudinal shaft 56 suitably journaled in the casing 24. Loosely mounted on the shaft 56 is a pair of bevel gears 57 controlled by a clutch 58 operated by a handle 59, whereby said gears 57 may be alternatively clutchedto the shaft 56 or both may be disconnected therefrom. Meshing with the gears 57 is a` bevel gear 60 rotatably mounted on a stud shaft 61 carried by the casing 24. Secured to or formed integral with the gear is a gear 62 which meshes with a pinion 63 fast on the shaft 41. By the foregoing connections it will be seen that either of the gears 57 may be clutched to the shaft 56 to cause the cutter bar to be swung either upwardly or downwardly about the axis of the shaft 28, or that, by disconnecting'- both of said gears from said shaft, the cutter bar may be held stationary by engagement of the worm 55 with the worm gear 54. It will be noted that this mechanism for adjusting the position of the cutter bar in a vertical plane, this bar swinging mechanism, is, so to speak, a distinct mechanism, though driven from the feed operating mechanism, and that it is a marked improvement over forms of bar swinging mechanism in which a single strand of chain or rope is connected in different ways to swing a bar in opposite directions, this mechanism including what may be called, for purposes of clarity and comparison, permanent connections with the bar which are capable of transmitting with out any readjustment thereof a bar swinging force in either direction, whereby there are eliminated the loss of time and the labor incident to rerceving etc., in the chain form of bar swinging mechanism referred to.
The pivotal mounting of the guide 22 upon the supporting arm 2O and the pivotal mounting of the latter upon the truck provide for a substantiall universal adjustahility of said guide an the cutting mechanism carried thereby. For emmple` the guide 22 may be adjusted angularly with respect to the truck about the pivot 21, in order to position the same transversely of the truck with the forward ends of the guides 23 extending in either direction from said truck and trackway. The arm 20 may also be swung about the pivot 19 to move the guide 22 transversely of the truck and trackway and longitudinally of itself to position the forward ends of the ways 23 at any desired distance at one side or the other of the trackway` thereby bringing the ends of said ways into any desired proximity to a wall or face extending parallel to said trackway at either side thereof irrespective of the distance of said wall or face from said trackway. Furthermore, longitudinal movement of the slide 16 by means of the screw 17 permits the position of said guide longitudinally of said truck to remain constant irrespective of its other adjustments.
Means are provided for supporting the projecting ends of the guide 22 and arm 20 when said guide is positioned transversely of the truck, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. For supporting the forward ends of the ways 23, each of said ways has pivoted thereto. at its outer side, a jack 64 adapted to be swung from its normal horizontal osition shown in Fig. 1 into an upright position, as shown in Fig. 6 and, when in the latter position, to engage at its opposite ends the roof and bottom of the mine, respectively. thereby se curely holding the ends of the guides 23 against movement in any direction. For supporting the outer end of the arm 20 and the rear end of the guide 22, there is prof vided a pair of laterally movable folding brackets 65 pivoted at 66 to the ways 10 at opposite sides of the truck. Said brackets 65 normally occupy a position parallel to the truck, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but when the guide 22 is swung into a position transverse to the truck one or the other of the brackets 65, depending upon the direction in which said guide is turned, may be swung laterally outward about its pivot into the position shown in Figs. 7 and 8 beneath the outer end of the arm 20. Pivoted to the outer end of each of the brackets 65 is a to the length 64 turned into their upright vertically s folding i'right 67 having en adjusts e oot 68. e uprghts 6T occupy the positions shown m Fi 1 und 2, and may be retained in said position by suitable supporting brackets 69 carried 2g the ways 10. When one or the other of brackets 65 is swung outwardly into its an supporting position the corresponding upright 67 is turned downwardly und its foot 68 adjusted to engage the mine bottom, thereby supporting the outer end of said bracket.
For transportation about the mine, the guide 22 and erm 20 are turned into a. i-
non parallel to the l of the truc es shown in Figs. 1, 2, an 6, this being also the position of the parts in the operation ol entry driv' or in cutting a face transverse of the trackwav 12. The latter operation is illustrated in Fig. 6 und is as follows: The truck is moved on the truckwny 12 into' a. position to bring ,the ends of the ways 28 es closely es possible or convenient to the face to be cut, and the jacks stions to sup- Eort seid ways in this position. The motor aving been started, the clutch 58 is operated to cause the cutter bar 25 to be swun upwardl into the ition shown in fu lines in ig. 6, andls thereafter released to cause seid cutter her to be held in this position. The clutch 43 is then o erated to conneet the feed sprocket 33 wi the shaft 42 in a manner to cause the cutting mechanism to be fed forwardly in the ways 23 from the gosition shown in full lines in Fig. 6 into the otted line position indicated by the letter A in said ligure, thereby causing the cutter bar to enter the face. The clutch 58 is then a ein operated in a manner lto cause the cutter er to be swung downwardly from the dotted line lposition A into the dotted line peosition B, making a vertical cui, said clutch ing then disconnected to cause said cutter har to be retained in this position. Finally, the feed sprocket 38 is again actuated to cause the cutting mechanism to move rearwardly from the dotted line position B into the dotted line position C, thereby completini` the cut.
or the purpose of making u cnt in a face parallel to the treckwuy 12, the arm 20 and ide 22 are swung into the position shown m Fig. 7, or into that shown in Fig. 8, depending upon the side of the trackway st which said face is located. In so positioning the arts the ends of the ways 23 are placed as c osely as possible or convenient to the foce to be cut, the pivots 19 und 21 permit ting auch ositonmg of the parts. The proper brac et 65 is then swung laterally and eet on its upright 67 to support the rear end of the guide 22,. the jacks 64 are turned into their operative posltiom; as above explained, and the cutti mechanism operated m the manner above escribed in order to produce the ont. While the guide 22 is showninFige7am-l Sasoccup ingpositious substantially et `xvilht enges to the truck and treckway, it be seen that seid guide may swunghinto substantially en ar position wrt respect to said imei trac wey to cause the cutter har 25 to be swung inubstantally any vertical plane depending upon the nature and position of the out desired.
It will be seen that by virtue of the arrun ment above described, whereby the cutter r is permitted to move in a vertical plane between' the ways 23, and whereby said wslys muy be positioned as closely as desireb e to the face to be cut, the cut mechanism may be sup orted and guid in close proximity to sal face while permittin s movement of the parts into the dotted ne osition C shown in Fig. 6, as is necessary in order to complete a relatively deep cut. with a long cutter bar.
