UNITED STATES JAMES ED'WIN MCC'UTCHEE, 011
VAN WEST, OHIO.
wnL'r BASP.
Application filed July 7,
relates to a welt rasp and it is primarily an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind WlllCll can readily and conviently be used by a cobbler to remove dirt and stiches from the welt of a shoe.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind wherein the rasp member may be readily removed or applied as the requirements of practice may necessitate.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my welt rasp whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simple, inexpensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein 7 Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a welt rasp constructed in accordance with a: embodiment of my invention;
This invention Figure 2 is a vlew partly in vertical section and partly in elevation of the structure as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on'the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figured is a view in bottom plan of the rasp member removed;
Figure 5 a view in end elemtion of the rasp member unapplied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, my device comprises a body member 1 substantially U-shaped in form and which has disposed along one side thereof a plate 2, said plate 2 being held to the member 1 in any desired manner as by rivets 3. The member 1 has its central portion secured by the screw l, or the like, to the end of a suitable handle member 5, the mounting at.- forded by the screw 4: permitting the memher 1 to have a swivel connection with the handle member 5.
The end portion of the handle member 5 immediately adjacent to the body member 1 is provided with an annular rabbet 6 in which is arranged the washer 7 operating as a wear member or plate.
1927. Serial No. 204,0 M.
The assembled body member 1 and plate 2 results in the provision of a side pocket or recess A and one end portion of the body member 1 has disposed transversely thereacross an internal groove or channel 8, the back wall a of which being inwardly inclined. The opposed portion of the inner wall of the body 1 at the opposite end portion is similarly inclined as at b and has disposed thereover a flange or ledge 9.
The rasp member It is substantially coextensive in length with the body- 1 and has contact with the outer ends of the body 1 and the adjacent outer marginal edge of the plate 2, said edge of the plate being coplanar with the outer ends of the body.
The central portion of the plate has disposed lengthwise thereof a flange 10, one side face of which being flush with the longitudinal edge of the rasp R and the opposed side face'being spaced from the adjacent margin of the rasp a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the outer marginal portion of the plate 2 so that when the rasp R is in applied position, the flange 10 will be substantially entirely received within the recess or pocket A. The ends of the flange 10 are inclined in the same manner asthe portions or walls a and Z) and upon movement of the applied rasp lengthwise in one direction, the rasp is effectively held againstdisplacement; v I
The requisite locking movement ot the rasp member It, as herein disclosed, is e through the medium oi a screw 11 freely disposed through an end portion of the body 1 and threaded through a nut adapted to be snugly received within a re cess 14: provided in the inner face of. the body 1. By this means the screw 11 may be readily threaded through the nut 12 and brought into requisite contact with the outer face of the flange and thereby impart desired endwise movement to the rasp memher to assure the desired locking engagement between an end 0 of the flange 10 and the back wall ca.
To facilitate the outer face of the flange 10 is provided with a recess 15 in whichthe screw 11 engages. As illustrated in Figure 1, this recess 15 comprises a groove extending lengthwise of the flange 10.
In view of the foregoing it is believed to the action of the screw 11.
I structed in be clearly understood that the rasp member may be readily applied or removed as required and particularly when it is deemed advisable to use a member especiallyadapted for either left work or right work.
The opposite ends of the flange 10 immediately adjacent to the body proper of the rasp member are provided withtransversely disposed recesses 16, one of which receiving the flange or ledge 9 and ting the entrance of the coacting end portion of the flange 10 within the groove or channel 8. v
From the foregoing; description it is thought to be obvious that a welt rasp conaccordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which may be assembled and operated, and it willalso be obvious that m inven tion is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and forn'iation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim l. A device of the class described comprising a substantially ilshaped member, a plate carried by said memberand closing one side thereof, one end portion of the member having transversely disposed channel, a rasp member overlying the ends of the first named member and provided with a flange extending within the U-shaped member, an end portion of said flange being reeived within the channel, and means carried by the U-shaped member and engageable with the flange for moving the raspmember in a direction toward the end of the, first the other facilitawith a flange extending within the U-shaped member, an end portion of said flangebeing received within the channel, and means carried by the U-shaped member and en gageable with the flange for moving the rasp member in a direction toward the end of the first member provided with the channel and to hold the same in such position, the opposite end portion of the U-shaped member having an 7 the adjacent end of the flange of the rasp member being recessed to receive such ledge. 8. A device of the classvdescribed; comprising' a substantially U-shaped member, a plate carried by said member and; closing one side thereof, one end portion of the member having a transversely disposed channel, a rasp member overlying the ends of the first named member and provided with a flange extending within the UV-shaped member, an end portion of said flange being received within the channel, and means carried by the shaped member and engageable with the flange for moving the rasp member in a direction toward the end of the first member provided with the channel and to hold the same in such position, the back wall of the channel and the adjacent end of the flange of the rasp member being in- Wardly inclined.
inwardly disposed ledge,
In testimony whereof I hereunto my signature.
