UNITED STATES CHARLES A. swirznn, or nns Mon-ins, owe.
SANITARY BABY TOILET Application filed Beceinber 7,1926.
This invention relates to and has for one of its objects to provide a sanitary toilet seat that shall be especially adapted for useby infants to the end that they may be protected from infection when public toilets, such as those on trains, in hotels and the like, only are available, and that shall be provided with means for securing an infant thereto and securing it to a standard toilet seat against casual'movement withrespect thereto;
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth wherein the securing meansshall embody a back and sides adapted to be folded against aside of the-seat so as to adapt the device to be carried in a suitcase or the like. -Withthe foregoing and other objects in view, the nature of which will become ap parent; as the description proceeds, the in vention consists of the novel construction, combination-and arrangement of parts here-- inafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a sanitary toilet seat constructed in accordance with my invention, the seat being shown applied to a standard toilet seat,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the vertical plane indicated by the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the sanitary toilet seat with the infant and seat securing means in folded position, and
Figure 4: is a detail sectional view taken on the vertical plane indicated by the line 4.4i of Figure 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and designated in the several views of the accompanying drawing, by similar reference characters;
1n the drawing, 1 designates a standard toilet seat and 2 my sanitary or auxiliary,
seat. The sanitary seat 2 may be made of wood, leather, metal, metal and leather or any other suitable material or materials. It is provided with an opening 3 which is smaller than the opening 1 of the standard seat 1, and is adapted to be placed upon the standard seat in the manner suggested in Figure 1. The sanitary seat 2 is provided with sides 5 and a back 6 which constitute the means for securing an infant on the Serial No. 153,068.
sanitary seat and securing the latter to the standard seat.
Each of the sides 5 is preferably made of metal and comprises a top bar 7 and end bars 8. The upper portions 8 of the end bars 8 incline downwardly and inwardly from the ends of the top bar 7, and the lower portions 8,? of the'end'bars are arranged in parallel relation and terminally provided with hooks 9 which pass through slots 10 in the sanitary seat 2. The sides 5 are connected to the sanitaryseat 2 by pivots 11 which pass through the upper ends ofthe hooks 9 and are suitably secured .to the sanitary seat 2. The'hooks 9 extend below the sanitary seat 2 and are adapted to engage the wall of the opening 4; of the standard seat 1, in the manner shown in Figure l, to firmly secure the sanitary seat to the standard seat, and the hooks are preferably provided with rubber sleeves 12 to prevent their, marri'ng the standard seat. As the sides 5 are pivoted to the sanitary seat 2, they may be readily manipulated in a manner that should be apparent to either engage their hooks 9 with or disengage them from the standard seat 1, whereby to either secure the sanitary seat to or release it from the standard seat.
The back 6 comprises a top bar 13 and side bars 14, and is preferably made of metal. The side bars 14 are provided at their lower ends with inturned extensions 15. The side edges of the sanitary seat 2 is provided with recesses or sockets 16 for the reception of the extensions 15 which constitute pivots through the medium of which the "back 6 is pivoted to the sanitary seat. The side bars 14 are arranged outwardly beyond the sides 5, and secured to said side bars and extending through the sides 5, is a bar 17 which is adapted to engage certain of the end bars 8 of the sides and thus support the back 6 in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined position.
A retaining strap 18 extends across the front ends of the sides 5. The strap 18 is detachably connected to eyes 19, which are carried by and depend from the top bars 7 by means of snap hooks 20.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it should be apparent that since the sides 5 are pivoted to the sanitary seat 2 they may be folded inwardly upon the seat, and that since the back 6 is pivoted to the sanitary seat 2 it may be folded with respect to the seat and that when'it is in folded position it is arranged Within the plane of the seat. The device is now so compactly folded that it may be conveniently carried in a suitcase or the like. 'When it is desired to use the cevice, the sides 5 are first moved into a position outwardly beyond their normally raised position, the sanitary seat is then applied to the standard seat 1 with the hooks 9 extending through. the opening 4t and then the back 13 is raised with the result that the sides 5 will be moved into their normally raised position and the hooks 9 engaged with the wall of the opening of the sanitary seat. The device is now firmly secured to the standard seat- 1 and after the infant is placed on the sanitary seat 2 it is secured therein by means of the strap 18. i
The device is simple, durable and highly efficient. It may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost, may be readily collapsed and erected, and may be readily attached to and removed from a standard toilet seat. v
It should be understood that the drawing is merely illustrative and does not pretend to give exact proportions. Furthermore, the said drawing is illustrative of a preferred construction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the character set forth, comprising an auxiliary toilet seat provided at its sides with slots, sides terminallyprovided with hooks passing through said slots, means pivoting the sides to the seat, a back pivoted to opposite edges of the seat, and a bar secured to the back and passing through the sides.
2. A device of the character set forth, comprising an auxiliary toilet seat, sides connected to the toilet seat to permit them to be raised and lowered with respect thereto, and
elements carried by the sides and adapted to occupy a position for engagement with a standard toilet seat when the sides are raised.
3. A device of the character set forth, comprising an auxiliary toilet seat, sides pivoted to the toilet seat to permit them to be raised and lowered with respect thereto, elements carried by the sides and adapted to occupy a position for engagement with a standard toilet seat when the si es are raised,
and means adapted to hold the'sides against casual movement in a directionto carry the elements out of engagement with the standard toilet seat.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
