Definitions

  • My invention relates to calculating machines, and in the present form is shown as an attachment to a typewriter.
  • the totalizer may be made to automatically add in one column, subtract in another column, and not calculate in another column, depending upon the preadjustment of certain cams.
  • a typical illustration of the utility of this characteristic is found in bank ers, accounts where inone column or portion of the sheet the date and name of an item will be spelled out, in another column deposits will be added, and in another column withdrawals subtracted.
  • One of the objects of my invention is to provide means whereby the automatic operation above indicated may be temporarily superseded and the machine be made to perform straight'addition or subtraction according tothe problem temporarily in hand.
  • the automatic mechanism would be so set as to normally make: the machine add in one column, subtract in another column and not calculate another: column; but occasions might frequently arise where itv would be necessary to add or subtract inall'of the columns or otherwise depart-from the standard .for'ni ofvaccount, andit. is my-prirpose toprovide manually operated mechanism capable of rendering the fautomatiemechanism non operative and simultaneously cause the machine to produce the kind ofcaloula tion rfequired.

  • Another object of my invention is to provide. means for correcting any mistakes which may have been made by the operator.
  • my machine is capable of both addition and subtraction. if the operator has added the wrong number the mistake may be corrected by subtracting the. number actually added. thus bringing the figure wheels back to the condition in which they were before the mistake was made and vice versa. It is my purpose to provide correcting mechanism so conulted that after a mistake has b n Serial No. 629,308.

It is an object of my invention to provide simple and efficient means for accomplishing this action and also for susperfding'said action a'nd'per'mittin'g the carriage to travelwithout m'oving thetotalizer. In connection with the last named object, it is my purpose to provide means whereby a single lever, herein termed the disconnecting lever may perform the double function of disconnecting the typewriter keys from the calculating mechanism and simultaneously disconnecting'thc totalizer from the mechanism which normally causes it to travel.

  • Plate 72 has three vertical guide slots 76 which receive the pins 7.7 which Screw into the stationary frame plate 23.
  • Said pins project through the slots in said fulcrum plate and permit it to move in a vertical direction. he position of the fulcrum plate vertically is controlled by a pin 78 which projects from said plate through a slot 79 in the lever 80, shown in Figures 5 to 9 and separately in Figure 20. Said lever is fulcrumed upon a pin 81 screwing into the frame plate 23. A spring 83 is fastened at one end to said lever and at the other end to frame plate 23 in such manner as to normally hold the pin 78 and fulcrum plate in raised position where the levers 68 and 69 can be operated upon by the controlling cams 85, S6 and 87. shown separately in perspective in Figures 12, 13 and 14 respectively. The relation of these cams to the rollers and their levers is shown in Figure 7.
  • Said cams are adjustably mounted upon a horizontal cam bar 88 which travels in unison with the typewriter carriage.
  • the most common practice in typewriters is to 50 .constreet the escapement that the carriage will travel one tenth of an inch at each step.
  • my machine I make apertures in the cam bar three tenths of an inch .apart and make apertures in the cams one tenth of an inch apart; hence the cams maybe adjusted every tenth of an inch along the bar and yettho bar is only penetrated once for every three tenths of an inch. • This-bar is mounted on the typewriter carriage and if it were necessary to make it travel right and left in such a way that its up and down position was always i guided with precision this would be an expensive and diflicult thing to do.
  • ⁇ Vith the present construction it is only necessary to see to it that this bar is low enough. It can be a little too low without any harm and no harm will be done if it is a little lower at one end than it is at the other, the only difference caused by such lack of precision being in the extent to which the spring 83 will be stretched. Moreover, if by any accident the shaft of the changegear mechanism should be blocked the mechanism would not be injured. In that event the whole action of the cams on-the followers would consist in stretching the spring 83.

JOHN C. WAHL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. ASSIGNOR. BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, T0 REM- INGTON ACCOUNTING MACHINE CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORA- TION OFLNEW YORK.
CALCULATING MACHINE.
My invention relates to calculating machines, and in the present form is shown as an attachment to a typewriter. In my machine the totalizer may be made to automatically add in one column, subtract in another column, and not calculate in another column, depending upon the preadjustment of certain cams. A typical illustration of the utility of this characteristic is found in bank ers, accounts where inone column or portion of the sheet the date and name of an item will be spelled out, in another column deposits will be added, and in another column withdrawals subtracted. One of the objects of my invention is to provide means whereby the automatic operation above indicated may be temporarily superseded and the machine be made to perform straight'addition or subtraction according tothe problem temporarily in hand. To illustrate, in a banking house the automatic mechanism would be so set as to normally make: the machine add in one column, subtract in another column and not calculate another: column; but occasions might frequently arise where itv would be necessary to add or subtract inall'of the columns or otherwise depart-from the standard .for'ni ofvaccount, andit. is my-prirpose toprovide manually operated mechanism capable of rendering the fautomatiemechanism non operative and simultaneously cause the machine to produce the kind ofcaloula tion rfequired. The means whereby. this is accomplished, for. convenience will be: termed the setting .mechanism. or manualcontrolmechanism may beioperatedwithout disturbingthe arrangementot the controlling cams which; form partof the, automatic controlling means. In the form of machine here shown the settingmechanism may be instant- ;ly operatedandtis under the control of a single manually operated setting. lever.
Another object of my invention: is to provide. means for correcting any mistakes which may have been made by the operator. As my machine is capable of both addition and subtraction. if the operator has added the wrong number the mistake may be corrected by subtracting the. number actually added. thus bringing the figure wheels back to the condition in which they were before the mistake was made and vice versa. It is my purpose to provide correcting mechanism so con tructed that after a mistake has b n Serial No. 629,308.
made. the operator may, by merely throwing a lever, cause the machine to perform the reverse operationirrespective of whether the mistake was made during addition or subtraction. According to my invention the machine may be instantly reversed by depressing the correcting lever, and this reversal will take place whether the machine is set for automatic or manual control. In fact, the operator, upon discovering that he has made a mistake, need; not take the trouble to inform himself as to whether the machine was adding or subtracting whenthe mistake was made nor whetherv it was Underautomat ic or manual control. i x l i I accomplish my objects byhthe mechanism illustrated. in the accompanying drawin s, in which: i Figure 1 is a front assembly view of mechanism embodying my inventionQj y Figure 2 isa plan view thereof. f Figures 3 and 4 are views of the right and left ends respectively of thelparts shown in Figure 2.. Similar numerals refer to. similar parts throughout the several views.
In the form of machine selected to'illustrate the invention the totalizer jumps, that is, is caused to travel a limited distance in unison with the typewriter carriage and is then released, returned to original position and again caused to travel in unison with the carriage.
The ty p'e'writ-ing machine to which the computing'mechanism isattached may-be of any'suitable description. In Fig. l. I have conventionally represented 'at 'A the ten numeral keys of an ordinary typewriter, at Bt-h'estationary carriage raiL-and'at C the 'front bar of the carriage itself which carriage'supports a papcr'platen D.
The'drivi'ngsector 1 is secured to the driving'sector shaft Iin such manner 'as'to rotate withsaid shafta'nd toswing laterally into'andout of 'mesh with the gear wheel 3 andcz'fu'sesaid wheel to rotate always in the same direction an amount depedent upon the value ofthe fi'gurekey struck. The mccha- 'nism'for 'causingsaid sector torotate and to vibrate laterally is shown to a'ce'rtain' extent 'in' the lower portion of Figuresl and 5, but as the mechanism has-been previously described in'Pa'tentNumber 893,719, granted to -me Julj 21, 1908' detailed' description is 'unnece'ssary'here. "Saidwh'eel 3, which is best shown in Figures 1, 2 and 11, is rigidly securedto a grooved sleeve 4, slida-bleupon a shafbsfand isat"all't-irne's i'n spline connectionwith a sleeve'6,wl iich isrigi'dlynp tached to said shaft and rigidly'secure'd to the 'm'aster'wheel 7. The .res'ult' is that the master wheel rotates when'eve'r "gear wheel' 3 rotates irrespective of -the position of said gear wheellaterallyuponfshaft5. Said-gear wheel remains permanently in mesh with a gear wheel 10 rigidly securedto a sleeve'll, mounted upon a shaft- 12' parallel to' shaft -5. 'Sleeves '4 and 11 'are "circumferentially grooved and engaged by 'a lever 13 fulcrume'd 'upon astationary 'pin'14. Sleeve 11 is rotatable independently of shaft12 but. is
adapted'to be shifted laterally by said shaft which is 'sli dabl'v mounted in the frame plates 16, 17. The normal position of the parts is shown in Figure'Z'and when in this position the sector 1 canengiige o'nly'the *gear wheel 3 which r'otates't-he master wheel 7 inthe direction to produce a ddition in the totalizer 1'8. W'hentshaft 12 is'shifted to therig'ht, FigurefL it shifts'the gear wheel '10 into apo'sitio'n' wlie reit canbe'en'gaiicd 'by the 'd'rivin'g sector. This'shifting'of the gear wheel 10 operates'the lever 13 and causes it toshift the; gear wheel 3 to a posi- 'tionwhere'it cannot'be reached by the sector '1. l/Vhen thepartsare i'n'thispositi'on the sector-enga'ges' the gear wheel '10which in turn' rotate's the gear wheel 3an'd the master wheel 7 and causes the latter torotate in the opposite direction from before and causes the totalizcr to subtract. When the shaft 12 is shifted to an intermediate position, as shown in Figure 11, the-wheels 3 and 10 both remain'outof reach of the driving sector and consequently no motion is transmitted from the latter. This'isknown as the non-calculating position, the parts normally driven by the driving sector remaining disconnected therefrom and from the rest of the key mechanism.
Shaft 12 is shifted by-means of'a slotted arm 20,"rigidl v secured to a r'oclkshaft L21. -As shown in detail in Figure 17 said rock shaft enters into and is rigidly secured to 'a sleeve 22. journ'aled in the stationalyframe piece 23 which-is secured to the top plate 23 'of thetypewriti'ngmachine. On the 'opposite side of said frame piece is a boss 24 which acts as adistancepiece, against the end of which bears -'a rocking plate 25 .fast on shaft 21. It is obvious thatby'rockin'g said plate in one direction the ma'chinemay be caused to add and by'rocking it in' the opposite direction'tbe. machine may'bo caused to subtract and by rocking it tdan'intermediatef position the machine may be disconnected from the keys,'that,is; rendered nonoperative.
Inmy machine saidplate is controllable in a variety 'of' ways which'willfirst besu'ggested and'later be rn'oreifully describedg First, a" setting: lever is provided which i is adapted to occupy three "different positions. In one extreme posit-ion the'totalizer will always addQfIn' the o positeextren1'e;position' the totalizer W1 1 "1 always subtract, and in interr'rrediate Posit-ionth'c' rocking ;pl ate 'and therefore f.th'e"mast r wheel will. be subject to 'the action of certain controlling cams which will cause the inachineto. add or siibtract'ornot calculate. depending upon 'the configuration oft-he cam temporarily in action. Consequently =the setting lever'm'aybe said to bc'capa'bleof producing addition, subtraction or automatic (cam) operation. Second, a. correct 'jrig lever is provided which is normally nonoperative but which, when thrown into act- 'i'ug position, will reverse tl edi're ctio'u of rotatiou of the master wheel irrespective of the direction in which said. master wheel would otlierwisehave rotated. I will first describe the setting lever'andparts operated thereby.
Set-tin incchmz-iam 0r mamzaZ crnu'rm'lim/ mean-s.
Said setting lever, which "lUi) is also shown at the right end of Figures 1 and 2 and at the left end of Figure 5 of the drawings works within a stationary slot-ted segment '29 which is suitably notched to hold said lever in high. low and intermediate positions. which in the present instance correspond respectively to subtracting. adding and automatic operation of the totalizer. Atthe rear end the lever is pivoted to a link 31 which in turn is pivoted to a lever 32 fulcrumed upon a stationary pin 33. as best shown in Figures 5, (i and 8. Said lever 32 has a slot and pin connection 34 with a rocker arm 35avhich is pivot-ed upon a stationary screw 36. Near the free end f said rocking lever is a screw 37 which atl'ords pivotal connect-ion 'with a can: bar 38 having at its far end a cam whose acting-surface may be divided into three portions 38*, 38 and 38. A slot 38 'is also formed in said cam bar, and through this slot extends a pin 40 rigidly fastened upon the lever 41 which is connected to and operated by the correcting lever in the manner hereinafter described. In the design shown the cam bar moves substantially horizontally when the arm 35 is rocked'andthe slot 38 extends parallel to the line of movement of said cam bar, whereby the bar is free to move horizontally but is controlled in a'verticaldirectionrby the pin 40. Said pin' is raised'and lowered by rotating'the lever 41 aboutits stationary fulcrum pin 42 in th e manner hereinafter explained It is sufficient for the present to say that the raising and lowering'ofthe pin 40 brings the carnbar to operative and to" non-operative positions respectively.
.T he cam surfaces 38*,38 and 38 upon the cam oar-are adapted to act upon two pins 45 and 46 projecting from the rocking plate 25 previously referred to. iThese'p'ins are" placed onlopposite sides of the center of the rock'shaft 21 upon which said plate is supported and the pins are so located as to' be actuated by the cam surfaces upon bar 38.' The proportion and arrangement is such that when lever 41 holds the canibar up in acting position a nioveu'ieut. of said bar toward the left (Figure 5) will cause the cams on said bar to act upon the pin 45 and rotate said platc in a clockwise direction (Figure and hold it there, the pin 45 tirstbeing acted upon by the cam surface 38 and then being retained in the final position by the cam surf gg which lies parallel with the direc tion of motion of the cam bar; 'lhe'tinal po sition of the cam bar and rocking plate is shown in Figure 8. \Vhen the can: bar is moved to the extreme rightthe cam surface 38 releases pin 45 while the cam surface 38" engages the pin 46 and rotates the rocking plate to the opposite position wherein it is held by the cam surface 38" acting upon pin 46. Thus the lengthwise movement of the cam bar rocks the plate 25 from one extreme position to the other to'change from addition to subtraction and vice versa. Vhen said bar is in intermediate position, as shown in Figure 7, the rocking plate is free to move withoutinterference by said caim bar.
'hen the lever 41 is rotated in such position as to permit the cam end of bar 38 t'o drop'down to non-acting position the'roclt ing plate is out of reach of the cam bar; irrespective of the position of the latter horrzontally. l
, Correcting mechanism. I will now describe the mechanism by means of which the action of the machine ma y be reversed for making correctidnsfiAs previously mentioned,' the lever 41' is fillcrumed upon'the's tationary pin 42; "It is pivoted to a link 48 which in turn is pivoted to the correcting lever' orckey" 49 which adapted to'be manually tsp'eiatedi SO'is'attached at. one a'to-thesntmmry fraine'plate 5 1 and at the otlfer to Ivei h we i is' f ren q"Mer tt 50 tends to 'lioldsaitl ebiffectin glevtiriii' ponj-f actin'gf position; with t liel'ileveffiiif in" position shown inr'F iglir 'fan'd 8.1 desired the correctii'l IeveiffmET'WE' 'lieldi dowain act-in positibn jby a flrefiamiii ag-5 a -:52 iye s i'ji r l ft ti n fi :p i tee ed-" a a "a apti i a e i hma r. 5 s ah-.1 'g i' f h correcting-levee These parts are s ei e iaa i-r as w toward said pin that wl'iefljsaid dog isdev pressed bythe' lowering of pin 57 the hook 59of said dog will engage said pin 45 and rock plate 25 to the opposite, position, shown in Figure 9; This lateralfinoveme'nt of' the dog is permitted byireason; ofthe space- 'af fordedto pin 62'by the lateral branch-64 "in said dog. In a similar mannerif from the central position shown in Figure 7, the plate 25 be rocked to a position to elevate pin 46 as shown in Fig. 5, the pin 62 in the vertical branch will swing the dog over toward pin 46 so that when said dogis depressed by the action of lever 41 the hook 60 of the dog will engage the pin 46 on the rocking plate and reverse the position of said plate, as shown in Figure 6. From the foregoing it willbe clear that the act of operating the correcting lever 49 (which causes the pin 57 to descend) will cause the'dog to act upon the rocking plate 25 in such manner as to reverse the latter and thereby change the machine from a condition to add to a condition to subtract. or vice versa.
In Fig. 8 the machine is shown set for subtraction by the cam 38, 38". WVhcn by the depression of the correction key-49 the parts are moved from the Fig. 8 to the Fig. 9 position the guide pin 40, being mounted on lever 41, moves downward and moves thecam part 38 away from pin 45 allowing thelatter to be depressed by the hook 58, thussetting the machine for addition. \Vhen the key 49 is released and the lever 41 is re stored by the spring .50.to its normal positionzthecam bar38 again moves upward and cam;par t .38" acting on pin 45 restores the pa'rtstO Subtraction as shown in Fig. 8. Th reversal effected by the key 49 therefore lasts only as long; as said key is held in its depressed position, the parts bein immediately restored when-the key is re eased.
The key or lever 49 is herein called a correcting key or lever, this being a convenient designation therefor and'expressing one of the principal uses ofsaid key, It will be obvious however thatsaid key or lever can befnsed onany occasion when'it is desired to make the machine do the opposite of that for which it was primarily set.
Automatic camp operation.
Izhave already described how the rocking plate 25.niaybe rocked .to and held in adding or, subtracting position as desired by the setting lever 26. I will now describe how Said plate may be operated by cams and automatically be rocked to adding position or. subtracting position or non-operating or noncalculating position:
According to the present design the machineis brought to automatic, cam operative condition by bringing the setting lever '26 to. intermediate position, as shown in Figures 1, 3, 5, 6 and elsewhere. A link 66 is pivoted at-one end to the rocking plate 25 and at the other end to a link 67 which ispivoted at its ends to levers 68 and 69 fulcrumed respectively upon pins 70 and 71 upon a fulcrum plate 72 which latter is shown separately in Figure 19. At their free ends said levers are provided with antifriction rollers 73 and 74 respectively adapted to be engaged and operated by the controlling cams which will presently be described. Plate 72 has three vertical guide slots 76 which receive the pins 7.7 which Screw into the stationary frame plate 23. Said pins project through the slots in said fulcrum plate and permit it to move in a vertical direction. he position of the fulcrum plate vertically is controlled by a pin 78 which projects from said plate through a slot 79 in the lever 80, shown in Figures 5 to 9 and separately in Figure 20.
Said cams are adjustably mounted upon a horizontal cam bar 88 which travels in unison with the typewriter carriage. The most common practice in typewriters is to 50 .constreet the escapement that the carriage will travel one tenth of an inch at each step. In my machine I make apertures in the cam bar three tenths of an inch .apart and make apertures in the cams one tenth of an inch apart; hence the cams maybe adjusted every tenth of an inch along the bar and yettho bar is only penetrated once for every three tenths of an inch. This reduces the amount of drilling necessary and correspondingly conservcs'the strength of the bar.
In the preferred form here shown, the main body of each cam isrin the form of a saddle resting upon the bar so as to engage it back and front, as best shown in the upper portion of Figures 3 and 16. The rollers 73 and 74 are located one behind the other and the cams therefore travel in different parallel paths. The cam 86, which is the adding cam, shown separately in Figure 13, has at the back an acting surface 86 adapted to engage and depress the roller 73 on the adding lever 68. \Vhen this action takes place said adding lever will be rotated in a clockwise direction (Figure 5) and will more. the link 67 towards the left, thus moving the link 66 to ard the left. and rocking the plate 25 to adding position. The subtracting cam 87. shown separately in Figure 14. has attached to the back thereof an acting cam 87* which is adapted to engage and depress the roller 74 on the subtracting lever 69 and thus rock the plate 25 to subtracting position. The non-calculating cam has an acting surface 85 adapted to engage the roller 73 and an acting cant 85 adapted to simultaneously engage the roller 74. The acting edges 85" and 85" of the non-calculating camf85 are-.abthe same level and the parts are so constructed that when the non calculating .cam.is in actionit will hold the rollers 73'and 7.4 Eat-the same level and thus hold the links 67 and 60 and the rocking plate =25. in intermediate position, I as shown iii-Figure 7. Cain mechanism acted upon by correcting lever.
a The selector. leveris operable not only by the roller 35 but-also by the lever 41 controlled .by the correcting lever 49. As previously stated, it is'the'function of the correcting lever. toreveise the direction of rotation ofthe-masterzwheel. I To render this possible-I-have'iprovided a'pin upon the levera il in position .-to engage the upper edgeiofthe selector lever 80 in such manner that when the correctinglleverz is moved do'wnmtm acting (correcting) 'position,"-"as shown-.-in"Figure 6,- i't will depress the ad'j a cent end of the selector lever and draw down the futcrumplate so that-the levers thereon wi'll befbutof reach of t-hecontrollingca'ms, as-.shownrin-:-Fig'ure 6. Undernormal condi tions: when the correcting lever is non-acting the pin '90 rivill be elevated and permitthe adjacentlend ofthe lever 80 'to'rise if otherwise free to do so. Under these conditions the position of the parts is shown in Figure 7-.
1 I; j;' 'It'willbe perceived that the setting of the change gears 3 and 10 by the shaft-'12 -corre sponds not with any definite actual elevation of said followers 73 and 74' but with the-relative elevations of said followers." Whenever the 1 shaft 12 occupies' its left-hand position corresponding to addition the {roller 74' oc-' cupies a higher positionthan the roller 7 3 as 'shown' -for eirample in-Fig. 9.: InQthis figure the partswere set for addition by means of f the correcting levera nd the-followers 73 and 74 both occupy depressed p0 sitionsbut theyoccupy the same relative po sitions that'they do in Fig. '5 Where the machine is under cam -control and the setting is for addition. The combination of two followers-so connected that-they control the addition of the computing mechanism by their relative positions, said followers pressed againstv their controlling cams by thespring 83, has marked advantages over other means of cam control. If for example in Fig. 5, the carriage be pulled back to the right the subtract cam 87 will push the followerroller'M down until said roller bears against the under side of the cam. This will force shaft 12 leftward as far as said shaft will go. If there is any excess of'downward motion forced by the cam this will be taken up by simply stretching the spring 83. V hen thedisconnect cam runs over the followers as shown in Fig. 7- a similar thing may'occmz- The two cam edges 85 and 85 compel the two rollers to occupy the same elevation. This will set the machine for disconnect regardless of any slight motion that the followers and their supporting means may be compelledto have together. In
HIT
other words, the cam 85 may occupy so low a position as to slightly stretch the spring One advantage of this construction is that it obviates the necessity for any great precision in the up and down position of the bar 88. This-bar is mounted on the typewriter carriage and if it were necessary to make it travel right and left in such a way that its up and down position was always i guided with precision this would be an expensive and diflicult thing to do. \Vith the present construction it is only necessary to see to it that this bar is low enough.
Operation.
The first option afforded the operator is whether he desires the machine to calculate and print or merely to print without calculating. This option is afforded by mechanism shown in my previous patent, and, therefore, may for the moment he disregarded- It may be assumed that the operator wishes the machine in calculating condition. Under these circumstances the correcting lever t9 will normally remain raised, as shown in Figures 4,16, 7 and 8, and will have no influence upon the parts of the machine which are acting. The operator now has the option as to whether he wishes the machine to-add orsubtract or to be controlled automatically by the controlling cams 85, 86, 87. If he wishes the machine to subtract he throws-thesetting-lever 26 up, thereby bringing theparts to the positions shown Figure 8 with the cam bar holding the look ing plate 25 in subtracting position and the selector lever 80 holding the fulcrum plate 72 down in non-acting position. If he wishes the machine to add he throws the setting lever down to the opposite end of its movement, thus reversing the position of=the cam bar and rocking plate, and bringing'the roller 35 from the acting point 80 to the acting point 80 on the selector lever 80 but leaving said lever and the fulcrum plate in the same position as before, that is, the non-acting position. If the operator wishes the machine to he cam operated he brings the setting lever to intermediate position, shown in Figure 3. thus bringing the cam bar 38 to intermediate position where it will not interfere with the rocking plate 25 and siinultaueously bringing the roller 35 to intermediate position where it will contact the acting point 80 of the selector lever and permit the spring 83- to hold the fulcrum plate elevated in acting position. The parts will then occupy the position shown in Figure 7 The operator now adjusts the controlling cams-85, 86, 87 to the proper positions upon the cam bar 88 to produce the kinds of calculation wanted in the various columns. The cams will then-automatically set the machine to add, subtract or not calculate, according to the configuration of the particular cam at the acting point above the levers 68 and 69.
If at any time the operator discovers that he has struck a wrong figure key he immediately depresses the correcting lever 49. This lowers the pin 90 on the lever 11 and causes the fulcrum plate 72 and levers thereon to be drawn down out-ofacting position. It also causes the downward movement of the pin 57 in lever 41 which drawsdownward the dog. 58, thus causing it to reverse the position-of the rockingv plate 25. The operator then merely has toistrike the sanie-fi'gu-re key over again, whereupon the effect-of theoriginal incorrect striking'will beneutrali-zed. If the incorrect figure were added the correcting lever will cause it to be' subtracted and vice versa. It *Will be noted that it is unnecessary for. the operator to observe whether the machine wasadding or subtract-P ing when the m-istake was made. The reversal -\vill;take place automatically upon the depression of the correcting lever.

The totalizer 18 previously mentioned is slidingly supported upon two bars 92 (Fig. 1) twhich are arrangediparallel to the travel ofthe typewriter carriage and are: supported in-fianges 23* of the stationaryframe plate 23. Said flanges are connected-by a yoke piece .93 which carries a pointer 93 to indi cate the operating point in the totaliz'er. The totali'zer is constantly urged toward the right (Figure 1) by a tension spring 94. Two cushion springs-95, coiled around the bars 92, minimize the shock when'the totalizer is released andmoves toward the right under the influence of. spring 94. Extending rearwardly fromthetot'a'lizer is a .bar 96, best shown in Figure 16. Said bar is pivoted on a pin'97 journaledin the walls o'fi-the totalizer andis'urge'd by a spring 98 in such-manner as to normally hold its rear end elevated in position to be engaged by the lugs 99 formed at thelower edge of the front side of'the controlling cams 85, 86,87 (Figs. 1, 3 and 16). said lugs are so formed that when they-and thetypewriter carriage are moving in a forward (leftward) direction (Fig. 5) they will engage the rear end of the bar 96 but-will depress and pass-over said bar when the typewriter carriage is be-- ingj returned to initial-position. To theleft of-the vtotalizer (Figure 1) a releasing cam 100 is screwed to.the frame plate 23 and is provided with a working edge 100 so formed that when the bar 96v comes-into contact therewith, as a result of thegtravel of the tot-alizer under theinfiuc'nce of the lugs 99, said-bar will be depressedfar-enough to release it from engagement with the acting lug 99 andthereby permit the spring 94 to return the totalizer to the right. As soon as the bar is released from the acting lug and from the releasing cam itautomatically rises under the influence ofthe spring 98 and assumes a position where it-may be engaged by the next succeeding lug'99. The totalizer will thus be brought backior each complete number, so that all the numbers occurring in the same horizontal line may be entered into the same totalizer if desired.
have provided means whereby the jumpingtotalizer may remain stationary at the initial position-.if desired, thus permitting the;m achine to operate as atypewriter without the burden ofmoving the totalizer. This in accomplishedby anai-m' 101 whichis f1ll-' crumed upona pin 101 rigidly carried by thfiiiframefplate23, as shown in Figures .1, 2 and 16;. Sand arm has a portion which over-- lies-.bar 96 in--suchmanner; that when said arm isirotated inancanti-clockwise direction (Figure l);-it will hold said bar clear of the passing lugs-99: ,S'aid arm is operated by a link 102 which is operated'byan arm 103 pivoted upon thestationary screw 104, as show-nnear the leftcentral portion of Figure 1.-.-';Sai d arm l03 is also shown in Figure 15. lit-projection 103...extends. toward the left from arm 103 and is engagedwithin-a slot 10.5, formed int.the ;disconnecting'zlever' 106. Said-.lever-is fulcrumedxupon the stationary pin lm and-the parts are-so arranged that when'the front handle portion of. said-dis .connecti'ng lever-iszdepressed it-Iwill rotate the arm' 103 in=a clockwise direction (Figure 1) andwmoVe-dink 102,- toward the right andcause -the. arm-l01-to pushthebar 96 down into non-acting position: .Thus whether the totalizer will travel or not depends uponthe position of the disconnecting lever 106.
