Application filed April 6; 192 5. Ser ia1-'I To. 20,881. Y
This invention relates to a wrench andparticularly to that type which employs a flexible gripping member.
The object of the present invention is' to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of the wrenches described; to provide a flexible gripping me1nher in the form of a chain, a flexible steel band or the like which is adapted tofcon pletely encircle the object being gripped and turned; and to provide in conjunction an opei ating lever and a gripping jaw whereby. the flexible gripping m'em-bern'iay be tightened or released; to provide means whereby the flexible gripping member may b'eshortened or lengthened'to snugly encircle pipes, caps, tubes, etc. of varying diameter; and further to provide a structure whereby a uniform pressure is. exertedup'on the flexible gr1pping member at all points when applied,
The invention is illustrated by way of eX- 1 ample in the accompany ng drawings, 1n
which: I
.Fig. 1 is a plan View in section showing one form of the wrench, this form being particularly employed as a cap jvrench for removing screw caps from fruit Jars and the like.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the section. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation showing the manner of attaching the flexible gripping member.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the gripping jaw.
Fig. 5 is a plan view in section showing the modified form of the wrench illustrated inFig.1.
Fig. 6 is a central vertical section. taken on line 66 of Fig. 5.
Figs. 5 and 6.
8 is a section taken on Fig. 5. y
Fig; 9. is a perspective view of the steel band gripping device employed in conjunc- Of Fig. 10.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the gripping jaw employed 1n the wrench shown in Fig. 13 is Fig. 10.
Referring to the drawings .in' detail, particularly to Fig. 1, .A indicates a handle member or lever which ingthis instance is constructed in two sections as indicated at 2 and 8, the handle'beingyin other words, .d=ivided longitudinally..- These longitudinal asection taken' on line 13-13 ofsections are secured together by-rivets shown 7 The inner end of the handleis enlargedto I form a head member generally indicated at l3. Thesides and inner-face Of thQJlIGRCF nien'ibenis open and the space formed between the upper and lower sid'e'sof the head member servesthe function ofa pocket or. I
receptacle fora'gripping jaw?) which, is perhaps best illustrated in F ig. 4; Passingthrough the upper and lower sections of the head member 13 and secured between the ame area at 6 and 7. o
The gripping j aw is provided with a front face 5 and side sections 8 and 9. These side sections are recessed as indicated at 101O and-1l-1l. The recesses 10 engage the pin 6 while the recesses 11 engage the pin 7. A pin or rivet is secured between the sidesections 8 and 9, as indicated at 12, anda spring 13 connects this pin with the rivet 4C, the spring serving the function ofpreventing accidental removal. of the gripping member 5,. and also serving the function of retaining the recesses 10 10 and1l-1l in engagement with the pins 6 and 7. The ends of the grip ping jaw are open, as shown in Fig-hand a flexible gripping member in theforn of a steel band, such, as shown at 14, may, thus be employed and may be secured to the pins 6 and 7. The ends of the steel band pass through the open endsof thegripping jaw 5.
They-are then passed around the respective pins 6 and 7, andare then folded back on themselves and riveted or otherwise secured, as indicated at 15. I 1
The wrench shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is particularly designed for removing screw caps 16 from fruit jars or the like; sucha gener-' ally indicated atC. Most, fruit jars in use,
whether quarts 0r pints, employ the same sized cap and adjustaibilityof the band l l is therefore unnecessary. If acap istobe removed. the band is merely slipped over the end of the cap so that it assumes the position shown in Fig. 2. If it is desired to tighten the cap, lever A is swung in the di-- pair of pins generally indicated v,
, ployed as indicatedatf) (see Fig. 7).
i'ection of'the arrow .'a.. Such swinging movement causes thelever to swing about the pin 7 The pin 6 swings away from the gripping jaw and the recesses 10, and the band 1d is thus tightened and grips the screw cover. The shoe 5 is at the same time forced against the cover and a uniform pressure is thus exerted around the entirepe-J riphery of the cap and is thus readily tightened.
If the cover is to be unscrewed, lever. A
is merely swu'ngin the oppositedirection.
Itwillthen swingwabout the pin 6 and the recesses 10 and pin 7 will move away from the recesses 11, .thus again tightening the band 14: and atthe same time applying pressure to the gripping shoe 5. The wrench is thus operable in either direction andthe same results are obtained. g Where adjustability oi the flexible gripping member 14 is required, the type of Wrenchsuch asshown in Figs. 5 an'd6 is employeds' The same gripping shoe is emsame type of'handle A is employed; lThe pin-s6 and 7 are used; In fact, there isno difference in construction, except that means are employed for shortening or lengthening the loop formed bythe steel band 14.
- This is accomplished by pivoting a member 17 on pin 7, as shown in Figs. 5 and 9. This niemb-er'cari'ies a cam 18 which swings abouta pin 19. This member also carries an operating lever 20 which engages the cum I 18. j A coil spring surrounds the pin 19, as
at 21 and this spring serves the function o1 normally turning the cam into gripping engagement with thesteel band 1 1: which is released position. The free end of the band interposed between the cam and the inner face 22 of member 17. l/Vith the cam in looking position, the extension or shortening of the band 14 cannot take place.
Hence, it it is desired to lengthen or short en the band, it is merely necessary to depress the lever 20, so thatthe cam is swung to a tighten or release theband ld is therefore thought unnecessary. V
A further modification of the wrench is sli'ownin'Fig. 10. In thisinstance a lever in the form of arod is employed, as indie cated at D. The head member consisting of two plates and .31, are riveted orbolted to the rod, as li ltllcfiited ilt 32. Pin-s are passed through. and securedin tliehead sections 30 and 31, as indicated at 6 and 7 and a gripping jaw is secured between the head sections as indicatedat 33. This grlpping jaw is practically seating identically to the jaws shown in Figs. & and 7, the only difference being that the outer face is flat, as -.,shown at 3 L: .Th-e jaw is secured between the head sections by a spring and its.
operationiis identical to the otherlwrenches.
The chain indicated at F,"1which formsthe flexible gripping member in this instance,
is permanently secured at one end to the pin 6, audit is adjustably secured to a toggle arm which in this instance forms a part of the pin 7". The out-erendfof'the toggle arm is forked, asshow n at i'ifi The inner faces of the block are grooved asfat 37, and pockets are formed .at the bottom thereof as at 38, which are adapted to receive the pins 39 -0I1Itl16 chain yThfat is, the chain is provided with pins'which are-sufficiently long to project, as shown at 39fl see particularly Fig. 13). The pins are dropped into the recesses 37 and pockets 3 8, and the chain may thus be lengthened or; shortened as desired.
The chain wrench israther substantial in.
construction, as it is employed for heavy duty worlnand it is for this 'rea'son that a handleof special constructionis employed. Otherwise, it operates the same as other wrenches and also includes, the same adjust,
ability as shownin Fig; 5.
VVhileI have shown the preferred forms of my invention as "now known tome, I wish it understood that various changes may be made in its construction without departing from the spiritotthejinvention as de fined in the appended claims.
Havingtlius described my invention, what I claim and'desire to secure by LettersPat-;
