BUILDING CARD STRUCTURE AND BLANK FOR FROEUCING THE SAME.
Application filed May 17, 1926, Serial No. 109,696, and in Great Britain October 5, 1925.
The present invention has for its object to produce a building card structure and a blank in multiple form from which the structural units may be cut and bent lnto shape, and provided with means whereby the several units may be interlocked so that a plurality of superimposed and adjacent units when arranged and interlocked will produce'pleasing and instructive architectural simulations, the parts of which are held together and the general form of which may be varied according to various architectural conceptions of the user. It is primarily ntended of course as an amusing and pleasing toy for children.
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings in which Fig. 1- shows in perspective a plurahty oi units relatively positioned for connecting them with each other but disconnected.
Fig. 2 shows a blank from which a multiplicity of units may be out.
Fig. 3 shows in a fragmentary detail and sectional view the manner of connecting adjacent units in building up an architectural structure.
Fig. 1 shows in perspective a simple form of architectural structure produced by coupling together a plurality of units.
Fig. 5 shows another form of blank from which the units may be out.
Fig. 6 shows a fragmentary detail of ad jacent superimposed units and illustrating the manner of connecting them.

Similar reference characters will be employed throughout the specification and drawings to designate corresponding parts.
The units are preferably made of cardboard of suitable weight, finish and flexibility, and preferably as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, a plurality of units will be formed in a single blank upon which will be printed, surface ornamentations 1, full lines 2, and dotted lines or scorings 3, the full lines in dicating cutting lines and the dotted lines or scorings bending lines. The ornamentations or that portion of the blank included between folding lines will be substantially square, and in the blank shown in Fig. 2 square units 4 will be provided between the cutting lines 2, and such unit will be pro vided with the slots 5 located within the margin and arranged parallel with each other and extending towards each other at the ends as indicated at 6. j The slots 5 pass entirely through the blank and form locking tongues or tabs 7. In the form shownin Fig. '5 the units 1 are positioned between two of the ornamental blocks and bounded by folding lines or scores 3. Each of the units with the exception of the units 1 are pro vided with extensions 8 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Each blank also will show cutting lines 2 for producing, when out up, eonnecting'units 9 for a purpose to be described.
When the blanks have been out up on the cutting lines 2 and bent on the bending lines or scorings 3 there will be produced the building or- structural units 1, 9, 10, 11 and 12. (See Fig. 1.) The units 9 ofcourse are simply rectangular strips of cardboard relatively narrow and somewhat shorter than the distance between two sides of the squares formed by the cutting lines or the bending and scoring lines 3. The unit 10 has two square members 13 united by an angle or gable 14 formed by bending upon an intermediate scoring line 3 and having the inwardly projecting flanges 15 at the lower ends of the members 18. The units 11 will have an intermediate unit 4 carrying the locking tongues 7 two side members 16 depending therefrom with the inwardly bent flanges 17 at the lower ends. The unit a will be simply a square provided with looking tongues 7. The units 12 will be substantially square and provided along two of their opposite edges with inwardly turned flanges 18.
Vfith the units or members out out and bent along the folding or bending lines in the formshown in Fig. 1 they may be connected so as to produce the simple architectural structure as shown in Fig. 41 by forcing the flanges 15 of the unit 10 beneath the locking tongues 7 of the unit f, and the flanges 17 of the unit 11 beneath the locking tongues 7 of the unit. 1, and the flanges 17 of the lowermost unit 11 beneath the locking tongues 7 of the single unit 41. In order to close the sides of the units 11 the units 12 are connected by forcing the flanges 18 of such units beneath the outer ends of the flanges 17, and t e adjacent surface of the architectu 'al structures.
It is important to note that the slots 5 forming the locking tongues 7 are set inward with relation to the edges of the unit 4 not only with regard to the longer portions 5 of such slots, but also with regard to the int-urned portions 6, so that there is practical- 1y an. unbroken marginal extension projecting. beyond the slots along all four sides of the square producing clearance space between adjacent units into which the flanges otother units or the coupling units 9 may be inserted.
The locking tongues 7 also will be of such width asto be able to receive a substantial portion ofthe inturned flanges 15, 17 and 18 andstill leave the wall surfaces of the units and all adjacent units on a line with .the wall surfaces of other units.
.For convenience of reference the unit 10 may be referred to as a gable unit; the units 11 as block units; the units 12 as side closing units; and the unit l where separately :tormed, as" a base unit. I
The blanks from which the units are to be cut may be of any number, dependent upon the number of units contained inany set of units, and of varying size, as shown and they niay be packed as separate sheets or they may be bound up in book form for convenience in packing and selling.
Having described my invention I claim: 1. A building card structure comprising card-board units each composed of a central member provided with looking tabs and other members having iii-turned flanges, the flanges of one unit engaged with the locking tabs of an adjacent unit, and side units provided with iii-turned flanges along two 01' its opposed edges adapted to be received in the space between the outer ends of the flanges and of adjacent units.
2. it building card structure comprising an integrally formed unit having a central member and members disposed at opposite sides of said central member, all of said menr bers being substantially uniform in size and shape, tlieouter members provided with an integral flange along one edge, said flanges of said outer members beingopposed' to and parallel with each other, the central member provided wholly within its surface area with integrally formed, parallel, oppositely extending tabs to receive tlie 'flanges of the outer members of an adjacent unit.
