IMPRovEMENT IN ENvELoPEs.
Spzcfica-tion forming part of Letters Patent No. 164,847, dated June 22, 1875; application filed i June 10, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER N. LEWIS, of Brooklyn, New York, have invented an Improvement in Envelopes, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to strengthen or re-enforce the tongue and part of the upper flap of an envelope, either by cutting the tongue of such length and shape as to allow it to be folded over and fastened to itself and to a part ot' the upper ap by gum or otherwise, or by using an additional piece ot' paper or other material and fastening it to the tongue and upper ap by gum or otherwise; in either case with the result ot' stift'ening both tongue and flap, so that the tongue eau be more easily inserted in the slot or slots of the envelope, and thus permitting the envelope to be made of lighter or thinner paper or other material thanis possible without the `re-enforcement, as herein set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents the upper flap of an envelope out with lengthened tongue, which is to be folded over at the point represented by the dotted lines ab, and fastened down by gum or otherwise. Fig. 2 represents the upper flap and tongue of an envelope, with the extension folded over and fastened down. Fig. 3 represents an extra piece of paper or other material cut to lit the shape of the tongue and to eover as much of the upper lap as may be necessary and Fig. 4 represents the upper liap and tongue of an envelope with the eXtra piece fastened thereto.
I claim as my invention- As a new article ot manufacture an envelope having a 13e-enforced guinmed tuck or tongue, substantially as described.
