It Will thus be seen that the shield may be leeplj/ embedded in the opening in the wall and need not extend to the outer end ol the opening or into engagement with the bar 2G in order to prevent the initial longitudinal movement of the bolt. When the hend ot the bolt engages the object 25 the nut will be further drawn along the bolt, further increasing the lirinneee of the anchorage, the parts taking approximately the position indicated in Fig. l.

13. A nut for expanding an expansion shield having a circular portion at one end and a flat sided portion at the other end and a tapered connecting portion extending substantially throughout the length of the nut.
14C. In combination, a shield having expansible portions, and an expanding element therein, having tapered portions engageable with the shield, the expansible portions of the shield engageable by said element being disposed in a cylindrical surface coaxial with the axis of the shield.
15. In combination, an expansion shield having longitudinally tapered fingers of uniform thickness and an expanding element having flat sides parallel to the axis of the shield and engageable with said fingers.
16. In combination, an expansion shield having a substantially cylindrical interior surface and a nut having a square end and tapered corners engageable with the cylindrical inner surface of the shield.
17. In combination, an expansion shield formed from metal of uniform thickness and having cylindrical interior portions and a nut having a polygonal end and having tapered corners engageable with the cylindrical interior portions of the shield.
18. An expansion shield having a plurality of expansible portions, a nut within said shield adapted totravel lengthwise therein and expand said portions, an internal stop shoulder in the shield engageable by the nut, and means on the outer surface of the shield adjacent the internal shoulder forming an excess of metal thereon.
19. In combination, a shield having a plurality of longitudinal slots forming a plurality of transversely tapered fingers of uniform thickness throughout their length. at least one of said fingers having its end bent inwardly toward the axis of the shield, and a nut between said fingers adapted to engage a bolt and to expand said fingers.

In combination, a shield having a plurality of longitudinally extending taper-ed 'i fingers of uniform thickness, and an expanding member having flat faces parallel to the axis of the shield and engaging said fingers andv adapted to force said fingers outwardly by the lateral wedging action of the flat faces on the tapered fingers.
21, In combination, an expansion shield having an internal ridge therein, reinforcing metal on the outer surface of the shield disposed in the plane of said ridge, and an expanding member in said shield, said ridge forming a stop for limiting the longitudinal movement of the expanding member in the shield.

In combination, an expansion shield comprising a substantially cylindrical tubular member 0f uniform thickness having longitudinally extending tapered portions, and an expanding member having flat surfaces substantially parallel to the shield axis and engageable with the edges of said tapered portions, and adapted to force said portions outwardly by a lateral wedging action.
