UNITE ST EDMUND M. PITTS, OF FRESNO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO SUNLAND SALES COOP- EBATIVE ASSOCIATION, OF FRESNO, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
FOLDING BOX.
I Application filed October 4, 1926. Serial No. 139,312.
This invention relates to folding pasteboard boxes in general, and in particular to k made, which will-provide for necessary advertising matter or description of the goods being dlsplayed, all on one side of the sheet only, will maintain a more attractive package as the oods are sold therefrom when the box is on y partly filled, and will be more rugged when arranged in slanted display position.
These and other objects are achieved in the. folding paper box construction shown in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan of the scored paper or cardboard blank.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box folded therefrom.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the box as1 arranged to display the commodity for sa c.
Fig. 4 shows the blank partly folded into box forrn.
In the blank shown in Fig. 1 the dot and dash lines denote scored or-creased lines adjacent which the sheet is to be bent away from the observer thus V while the plain dotted lines represent scorings where the sheet is to be bent in the reverse direction thus A, in forming the box.
The various sections and features of the blank are lettered and numbered A, B, C, etc.-, and'l, 2, 3, etc., and since this lettering and numbering is carried out in the partial and folded views it is thought will be sufficient disclosure as to the manner of .folding without entering several pages of additional instructions herein which would be entirely superfluous to anyone skilled" in the art.
When the box is all folded ready for shipment it appears as in Fig. 2 with ends of for delivery to the re-.
side flaps RS, TU of lid Q,P, engaged in cuts 1-2 of the sides CB. The ends of the box are of several thicknesses. The flap H of the left hand end is hooked under the part t inside of the box, and the notch 8 hooked under the part 5.
The lid of the box opens by bending .on
the various scored lines to lie under the box as shown in Fig. 3, and when so opened supports the box on a table or counter at. an angle for display of its contents as indicated. The box when thus opened reveals but a portion of its interior since the section I) overlies the upper part. This part D acts as a shield as the goods are sold from the box, so that the goods falling or being moved to the lower end'always'makes the box seem relatively full as the empty portion is covered by the shield. The shield also serves for printing instructions or advertising matter relative to the goods, and an additional tab is provided at D to receive the trademark imprint, name of the manufacturer, or other pertinent data, and owing to the angle this tab immediately attracts the attention of a person viewing the display. By my construction the lower end F being of several thicknesses of card held in place by the part 4 as explained will not warp or sag out of shape, and the supporting portions R and T are each provided with an inwardly folded leg as at S and U thereby' preventing their supporting edges from warping due to the weight of the goods upon them, and the sections R, T are tied by members X and Y overlapping V and W all held in place by Z locked under 7.
Also it should be observed that the pacle age as arranged for display is stable and may be moved around as a unit since the supporting portions are locked to the bottom A of tle box by means of the portion 6 engaged through the cut Attention is called to the slight widen ing of the blank at the ends of the lines separating X from Z, also N from O, and H from G, as indicatedv on Fig. 1 of the drawing. This feature insures the respective portions so widened wedging tightly in place when folding the blank into box form so that they remain in position and are not easily displaced.
Another point is that with my construction any printing to appear on outer surfaces of the folded box or on D and D" of the open box, is all done on one side only of the flat blank.
I claim: 1. A folding box of the character described provided with a lid sectign hinged to the same adapted for swinging from a position covering the box to a postion underneath a portion only of the same for propping the box at an angle on a supporting surface, said lid section being provided w1th a pair of sideflaps for so supporting the box each provided with an inwardly turned extension lying on the supporting surface.
2. A folding box of the character described provided with a lid section hinged to the same adapted for swinging from a position I covering the 'box to a position underneath the same for propping the box at an angle, the box when so uncovered being provided with a closed and locked sub-cover concealing some of the interior of the box from view. v
3; A folding box of the character described provided with a lid section hinged to the same adapted for swinging from a position covering the box to a position underneath the same for propping the box at an angle, said box when so uncovered and supported being provided with a closed sub-cover concealing portion only of the interior of the box from view and said sub-cover provided with an exposed flap at its upper end adapted to project upward from the box.
